BFG M/T ?vs ?Goodyear MT/R

Thanks to all for making this a great forum -
I have learned a LOT!!!

I was planning to buy a new set of BFG's for my new AV,
but I noticed that at least a few of you are using MT/R's.

Not to step on any toes, but I have never really been a big fan of Goodyear tires. ?I have had a few sets before (never MT/R's) that did not deliver impressive performance, and had problems with premature / uneven wear, despite proper inflation & rotation.
(They were on new vehicles that were properly aligned.)

Conversely, I have had a few sets of BFG A/T's that I have been very happy with, but want a more aggressive tread this time for better off-road and snow traction, plus I like the looks of the M/T more! ?(y)

(I've had Interco SuperSwampers before as well...
loved them, but I will be doing too much highway driving this time to justify them... they wear very fast,
and are not highway-friendly.)

However, since some of you are running the MT/R, I decided to take a look. They look good - similar pattern to the BFG. I feel like I would be satisfied with either Brand in terms of the way they look.

What I am wondering is about the performance and durability of the MT/R's.

I looked at the survey results at tirerack.com :

Mud-Terrain T/A KM

and

GY Wrangler MT/R

The MT/R rec'd better scores in every category...
however, this is not a true "test" but rather just a compilation of people's opinions... (HEY, wait a sec - isn't that what I am asking for here as well? ? :0:

Actually, due to the ease of participating in the survey, I am wondering how accurate the results can be.

Does anyone know of any more reliable comparisons, or actual tests? ? ???

Also, any of you who have had either of these tires, please post your thoughts here!

Not that it really matters to this topic,
but just in case... I will be buying 265/75/16's,
unless I learn that 285's will fit my 2500 with stock rims,
(no lift) without having to flatten the hump in the wheel well.

Thanks!

Dave

Dave, ?

I have never tried the Goodyear's M/T, only BFG MudTerrains on my trucks. The BFG's are a great tire and wear real nice, they also perform very well off road. Like any set of mud tires, you do have to pay attention to tire pressure for good wear though.

I have had Goodyear's as well, as far as other Goodyear tires (not m'tr's), I have experienced the same results;, poor wear patterns, issues with pulling due to the wear, so-so traction, etc..

I am considering a new set of tires pretty soon myself, and I am considering leaning toward the Pro-Comp M/T's for a change. I have talked to many people that have them and they are really happy with them, no complaints at all. Here is a link to check them out http://www.procomptires.com/mudt.html. ?Just my $0.02

I have the Pro Comp Mud Terrains and they have been a great tire thus far. Nice ride down the highway with only limited tire howl from tread, and they perform well in off-road situations.

Definitely a (y)

Three sets of BFG all terrian TAs on my other truck, no MT experiance but have heard wet traction comments, search other boards for additional survey info. I do know that I liked my AT TAs, but that they did spin on wet pafement fairly easily.

I now run MT/Rs - and I really love them. (No tread wear to speak of after 6,000 miles). Very aggressive tread, but fairly quiet considering (this being another key issue if you drive mostly on pavement). And they do not break loose nearly as easily as my BFGs used to on wet pavement, but then again, that was with BFG All Terrains, not BFG M/Ts. Also got me through some serious deep holes in off road mud.

I went through the same analysis that you are conducting before going with the MT/Rs. Either way, you won't be dissapointed. Also consider Pro Comps. Your 16s give you other options as well, look at Geolander too (but mroe like the BFG AT TA in tread aggression, I think).

Thanks to everyone!

Lightning:
Have you ever had BFG A/Ts?
If so, do you think the M/Ts are better or worse on wet pavement? I know my A/Ts will break loose fairly easily.

flynhigh:
Thanks for the tip on the ProComps...
now I have something ELSE to consider

jackalanche:
How do the MT/Rs handle on dry pavement compared to your BFG A/Ts?

Thanks again and have a great week!

Dave

no issue as for dry pavement characterisitcs - the MT/Rs have the stiffest sidewalls I have ever seen, so this may negate any squishiness from chunky tread that you might expect for such tires in slalom runs . . .

www.tirerack.com has a great website on tires. I just purchased a set of MT/R's for my Av on the website.

I did a lot of asking around. People were pretty much 50/50 on the BFG's vs. the Goodyears. The website also has comparisons on it. You pick the tires by the sizes or Manufacturer, and then you can compare them.

The Good years out did the BFG's on the tests and customer satisfaction.

Goodyear has the new 3ply sidewalls. BFG had the market (Patent) until 2001. The Goodyear guys are using a silica layer between the sidewalls. They built these puppies for the military for an armored version of the hummer. They are supposedly the best out there, and they are $10 cheaper than the BFG's.

285/70R17 were $186 a piece.

I have been driving MTR's for three years. I put 35000 miles on the last set. I own a treeplanting company and bought them for the sidewall technology - I kept destroying brand new tires by slitting the sidewalls. Not even a single flat in 35000 miles, and on some of the nastiest road you can imagine. I am currently running MTR's and I don't think I'll be changing anytime soon.

Mine should be in Thursday ;D

I'll have the lift and tires done in one day. I can't wait! I was showing some of your guys' pictures to a friend of mine. She just got an Avalanche, but it is different. It has no cladding and different headlights and stuff. Looks kind of strange without the cladding. I don't know if it is factory or if the dealer did it, but it needs the cladding......Weird looking without it.

JRose you JUST KNOW you got our collective attention going now - pretty please do a service to this board, and become a hero too, by snapping a few digi pix of the gal's naked Av and posting them? Asking her how she came to get it that way would be of value to us as well.

PS I got my MTRs off of TireRack too, great guys, went out of their way to remind me that the size was not approved befre they shipped 'em, and the price was the best one I could find, net-wide.

Jack.....my friend does not live close to me. After seeing your post, I called her. She bought the Av and had the cladding removed apparently. She didn't like the cladding. It's weird looking. She likes it though. told her about the fan club, and she started telling me I was a nerd for joining a fanclub. I told her she would join if she were smart. There is so much good info here. I told her to send me some digipix of the Av for the club, but she says she doesn't want her av on a website. Now she won't send me pics. I'll talk to her husband and see if he'll sneak some off to me >:D

Seven!

I'm running BFG Mud Terrains and love them. I've had several sets of BFG tires in the past (but never mud terrains) and have always found them satisfactory. I do have to say that the A/T's that I had at one point several years ago did not do very well on wet pavement (as observed by jackalanche). No experience with MT/R's so I can't comment there, but have read in multiple sources that it is an excellent tire.

I have also heard good things (on this board and elsewhere) about the Pro Comp tires.

I think any of these three would be a good tire for you and it may come down to which one you can get the best price for the size you want.

285/75/16 WILL require minor fender mods (flattening the hump at the back of the wheel well). It wasn't too difficult to do, but if you don't want to do any mod, stay away from the 285's. (see my signature link for a pic of my Av with the 285's) I'm guessing that the fender rubs I had were due to the 4 inch backspacing on my aftermarket wheels. It looks to me like maybe you could get away with 285's (without fender mods) on something closer to stock backspacing (5.5") but this is totally unverified.

...one more thing... when you get the tires, post pictures please :)

Crexis!

Thanks for the feedback!

NOW I remember where I got my Desktop Background pic... it is YOUR truck! ? :D

I have had to wait for awhile to get my AV,
but it is a Pewter 2500, and yours is by far the nicest pic that I have seen of a Pewter AV... so,
it has been my background for about a week now!

Actually, seeing your truck helped me make up my mind on the color as well. ?

Your reply leads me to believe that the M/Ts are doing better for you on wet pavement than the A/Ts did...
is that correct? ?If so, I am glad to hear that, as that was on of my biggest concerns... the tirerack ratings said that the A/T is better on wet pavement AND in snow than the M/T. ????

I liked my A/Ts, ?but I could just not picture that.
Please do get back to me on this!

Any other major differences in handling or anything?
I know the M/Ts will be louder, but are there any other major differences?

Thanks again,
and sorry I "stole" your truck! ? (y)

Dave!

I'm glad you like the pics, thanks for the compliments! I didn't think I'd like the pewter as much at first, but LOVE it now. I really, really like the darker colored Av's (black, Indigo) but the pewter doesn't show the dust as badly, and out here that's a huge bonus! I also like the way it sort of blends with the gray cladding (since I don't want to paint the cladding, only to destroy it off-road >:D )

The BFG Muds I have now seem a little more stable on wet pavement than the older BFG's I had. Since we only get some afternoon thunderstorms here and no snow, it wasn't high on my list of important features, so I'm not the best source of info on this one... I think I've heard others suggest the MTR might be better for wet roads...

Keith!

Do you honestly expect me to believe that you don't get snow... in Arizona ??? ? :2:

Guess that wouldn't be much of a concern for you... ?:)

I'm with you on the dark colors...
especially the Black! ?It looks great,
but just so tough to keep clean.

I really like the Pewter...
it is very subtle, but it does blend with the cladding really well, and it will show dust, scratches, etc... much less than the other colors!

Plus, I expect that it will look "new" longer, since the paint hides the defects so well.

Well, thanks again -
I will post pics in a few weeks after I get my tires
(actually having the AV here wouldn't hurt either)
I have to wait until I close on my house in a couple of weeks, but my dealer went and got it for me today, and have marked it "Sold!"

Have a great week!

Dave
