BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK GTG- FEBRUARY 13-16, 2004-TEXAS STYLE- General info.

That's great Dave, but let's turn those possibles into definites. And don't forget, we need to start making some reservations. Those places get booked up waaaaaay in advance!

Thanks for this wonderful idea.

Now, to the rest of you, get off your behinds. Let's go to Big Bend!

I really want to go to this gtg but it all depends on the wife and her pregnancy.

Dave please add ChubbsAV with 3 peeps to the list, he plans to attend this Big Bend cruise.

Lodging is rapidly becoming scarce! If we are going to do this we MUST make some reservations soon. The lodge inside the park is booked.

I have been touting Terlingua as the place to stay, but Dave pointed out that it is about 110 miles further than Marathon. Good point, but availability in Marathon is doubtful. Marathon Motel is booked for Friday the 13th and Saturday the 14th. They have a couple rooms available for Sunday the 15th. I did not call the Gage Hotel in Marathon. http://www.gagehotel.com 800-884-4243.

An alternative would be Alpine, 31 miles past Marathon. I have not called, but according to the web, two motels there, Oak Tree and Best Western, are booked. Others are probably available.

I have found a place only 68 miles further than Alpine, about 100 from Marathon. Longhorn Ranch Motel: http://www.terlinguatx.com/longhorn.html

As of this morning they have 16 rooms available for Saturday and Sunday nights. I didn?t ask, but I assume they are also available Friday night. This looks good to me. FYI, somewhere I ran across a link that indicated a San Antonio Jeep club stayed there. Anyone know anyone in ?SAJE??

A disadvantage is that it is about 10 miles from ?town? where the store and other eating-places are. In the middle of town (the highway intersection) are the Mission Lodge and Big Bend Motor Inn. http://www.texbesthotels.com/terlingua_mission.htm & http://texbesthotels.com/bigbend_motorinn.htm These are owned by the same company and are across the street from one another. I didn't call, but I assume they have availability. (I?ve stayed there before.)

The Terlingua Ranch Lodge is several miles away on a dirt road. http://www.terlinguaranch.com I didn?t call them because I thought that no private baths might turn a few people off. One advantage here would be for those who would like to camp. From the web site it sounds to me like their campsites are better than the RV sites at the Longhorn.

Of course people wanting to camp will probably do so inside the park. The Cottonwood campground is about 30 miles from town (Study Butte / Terlingua). That campground is near the beginning of the River Road, along which is some of the best primitive camping. Campers may want to make reservations too. If you are thinking of primitive camping, contact me.

Thoughts, feelings, ideas, suggestions?

I suppose we don?t all have to stay at the same place. Personally, I vote for the Longhorn. If there is a consensus, I propose that everyone that can do so make a commitment now. If you can let me know how many rooms, I?ll take care of reserving them. People who decide at the last minute can probably get in at the Mission or the Motor Inn.

Update: The Gage Hotel in Marathon is booked up. Like the Marathon Motel, all they have is a couple rooms available for Sunday night, the 15th.

Correction: Regarding reservations for campsites in the park. I don?t know if you can do this or not. Some of the web pages say you can. However, I found one that said due to ?litigation? the whole reservation system is in limbo. First come first served. I don?t think that will be a problem for anyone wanting to camp.

Addition: On the previous post I left out the Chisos Mining Co. Motel. http://www.cmcm.cc/big_bend_lodging_001.htm This is an alternative to the Longhorn. It is located about ? mile from the highway intersection, 118 and 170, what I call ?town? of Terlingua / Study Butte. That proximity is an advantage over the Longhorn, but they have no food service at the motel. (I mostly care about morning coffee, and some rooms have kitchens!) This place is a combination of motel rooms and cabins. They have 8 economy rooms, 12 deluxe rooms, and 8 cabins. As of this afternoon they are ALL available for our weekend! I found some reviews on the web, and all were positive. The locals call this the Easter Egg Motel. I think I change my vote to here!

I was looking at the list where is Ed K and Hoss? Put Hoss down for 2 and a maybe. Has anyone contacted Ed K ???

We have a probable maybe - add 2 more for Tex2Step. She is very interested in going on a cruise!!

Pencil me in for two and a half. It's been a long time since Iv'e been down there........there might even be a mountain bike race going on at that time. I know Lajitas puts one on each year around that time. Draws a lot of pro riders.

So who is staying where? Are we going to try and stay together or have a lot of others made reservations already?

Hey Dave,

Put us down also. Me & the missus will represent the Coastal Bend. Now, where is everyone booked? I would like to get close by SOMEONE!!!

Here is the BB ACA meeting place:
Castroville, TX 7:00am Depart 7:30am Come earlier to get breakfast before departure. The exact meeting place will be given soon. Chubbs has to drive over there to find out the name and location of the restaurant he is thinking of meeting.

Richard and Texas Space- You are both welcome to stay here at my house with family and all Thursday night. We can then leave here by 5:30am Friday. That will give you guys a better nights sleep. I live only 10min from I10.

Got home about an hour ago! Trip was great!!!!! We had 12 AVs show up for Big Bend! We all had a great time seeing old friends and meeting other AV members for the first time! The bon fire was great the food at the motel was great and the cruising was great. We all had very dirty AV's but it was well worth driving through the ice and mud to get to Big Bend!

The 12 AVers at Big Bend were:
ImpactAV

ChubbsAV
TribalAV
MissAV

The motel was great, Betty at the Longhorn Motel, was great as well. She had a buffet dinner for us on Saturday all with Valentine decorations and all, I had a great time at the Saturday dinner.

A big THANK YOU to ImpactAV he did a great job with picking the motel and leading us around the Big Bend area. The park is awesome and we didn't even get to see half of it.

I will post some pics sometime tomorrow. I have to go to the auto parts store tomorrow, I had a fog lamp go out on my AV :2: So I must replace that ASAP!!! and I must get her detailed she is still dirty.

Thanks Lisa. I really wanted to go but work dictated otherwise.
At least we should be all finished by the end of this month.
I'm on the road the rest of this week to Abilene and San Angelo to
complete things there.
