Major SUV Recall Planned
Steering And Brake Problems Blamed
WNBC.com Channel 4 News
General Motors says owners of certain 2003 and 2004 models will soon receive a recall notice. It will address performance concerns like the ones a woman recently brought to NewsChannel 4's attention.
Donna Peles uses her Hummer2 for much more than shopping trips and soccer practice.
?We have a house on the top of mountain and there's lots and lots of snow up there on the Poconos, and I needed it for safety purposes,? said Peles.
She says two recent incidents have given cause for concern. The first happened while the family was leaving their driveway.
?We were pulling out all the brakes and the steering just stopped working,? said Peles. ?And then it started work a little better but it was very hard to drive with.?
They say it happened a second time.
?When we got to the intersection, we started--everything just shut down again,? said Peles. ?It came back a couple seconds afterwards.?
The Peles? report each loss of steering or brake power lasted a few seconds then the vehicle required more effort to steer and brake. There were no injuries or accidents.
?So, I contacted Hummer and Hummer said that they would look into it,? said Peles.
Actually many people have been looking into it. In January, GM alerted the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration that tests revealed a part of the hydro brake relief valve seal may fracture, not just with the Hummer2.
Some of the 2003 Cadillac Escalad Escalades Ext/Esv, Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado Suburban, Tahoe Express, GMC Yukon/Yukon XL, Sierra - Savana may have a similar problem.
In all, about 75,000 vehicles are affected.
Because the replacement valve part are being manufactured, the recall notices will go out in June.
NHSTA told us the problem does not directly affect the steering or brakes, but the power boost assist, with no injuries or accidents reported an immediate recall is not needed.
