New member. Thinking of trading my 97 Tahoe for a Avalanche. A 2002 leftover at a good price, or will the 2003 offer anything new. Is the 5.3 enough motor for this truck ?, I was hoping the 2003 would be the 6.0, as the 8.1 would be too much fuel, I think.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

Av is built off the Suburban frame...more room than your Tahoe, 5.3 has more grunt than your 5.7...it is PLENTY enuff...if you are towing and/or just gotta have it...get the Av 8.1...The '03 will have some stuff optional like Bose Radio, power folding mirrors, steering wheel/radio controls and wheel from the Trailblazer plus some other stuff...Price will be up as well as some optional stuff that we got standard...cladding may be darker too... ?The deals they are working right now are GREAT!
Don't wait...get the Av NOW!!!
This goup has grown from bout 500 members when I signed on in May/June to over 1600 now...that oughta tell you sumthin bout this Av thang!!! :B:

I traded my 96 Tahoe in on my Z71. I really liked the Tahoe, plenty of power, lots of room, good ride. I first test drove an AV about 4 months ago and was hooked! I got mine 2 weeks ago and love it, more power than the 5.7, nice smooth, quiet ride, lots of standard stuff and plenty of room. already installed the GM protection package and hitch cover and bought my son an identical 1/24 scale of mine, he loves it too! I got a really good deal by talking to the internet sales manager at my local dealer and got the AV for invoice minus the $2500 rebate. I decided to get the 2002 for the standard features, the great deals right now and I COULDN"T WAIT ANY LONGER!!!! ;D

There are significant changes. IMHO it is worth waiting to get the 2003, hard as it is to wait, that is what I am doing.

I like the dual air, stabilitrak (avail on Z66), steering wheel audio controls. Either way it is a great truck - you know that if you have driven one!

I agree with silversport, and if you have concerns about the towing go with 4:10 axle ratio. Keep in mind chevrolet already increased the base price of 2002's 3%, this is since I leased back in Feb. of this year. So they may not need to raise the price of "03's" because they allready have. As you know 2003 will have less standard content. Good luck and welcome to the club.

True that some of the '02 "standard" options are now "optional" but you get more new "standard" options too with the '03. Check out the details here:

There has been a lot written on gear ratios and engine choices in the Towing Forums.
