No, Siri hasn't closed its doors yet, but XM is about to stomp them by including Siri's best feature, one that I was willing to pay more for, which is COMMERCIAL FREE programming. I have a feeling that dark days may lie ahead for Siri. Here's the info.............
Dear XM Subscriber:

First, from all of us at XM, thank you for being a valued member of the XM family.

From every vantage point XM had a spectacular 2003. Ending the year with over 1.36 million subscribers, XM Satellite Radio is one of the fastest growing entertainment media ever. Building on this tremendous momentum, we?re delighted to announce several programming content enhancements in 2004 we know you?re going to love.

First, XM will offer 100% COMMERCIAL-FREE MUSIC beginning February 1st. With 68 commercial-free music channels, XM will deliver the most commercial-free music in satellite radio. From Rock to Jazz, Classical to Hip-Hop, Country to R&B, you?ll now enjoy more of the music you love, without commercial interruption.

Complementing the move to 100% commercial-free music will be the debut of exciting new channels, including:
* Highway 16 ? Today?s top Country Hits - Ch. 16
* The Blend ? Adult Contemporary Hits - Ch. 25
* Fungus ? Punk Rock - Ch. 53
* Lucy ? Classic Alternative Hits - Ch. 54
* MSNBC ? Global and national news - Ch. 130

We are also pleased to announce the launch of XM INSTANT TRAFFIC & WEATHER. Powered by Traffic Pulse and The Weather Channel, XM Instant Traffic & Weather will offer listeners in-depth, up-to-date information about road and weather conditions in 21 major metropolitan markets nationwide, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, providing greater detail and more frequent updates than available elsewhere on the radio. The first 15 metropolitan markets are available beginning March 1st. You can visit http://traffic.xmradio.com to hear report samples and learn more about this wonderful new XM service.

There?s more good news. 100% Commercial-free music, exciting new programming content, Instant Traffic & Weather ? all will be included as part of your basic subscription. There are no new charges or fees.

To accommodate these many exciting enhancements, some channels will change number, category, and/or format, or will be eliminated.
* MTV (ch. 25) and VH1 (ch. 26) will move from Hits to Variety (ch. 155 and 156, respectively).
* Spirit (ch. 63) will move from Urban to Christian (ch. 33)
* Fine Tuning (ch. 104) will move from World to Rock (ch. 49)
* XM Live (ch. 16:cool: will move from Variety to Hits (ch. 26)
* We will no longer carry Special X (ch. 30), Aguila (ch. 90), Vibra (ch. 92), and Tejano (ch. 93).

A new channel lineup card will be mailed to you later this month. For more information about all the changes and to view a new channel lineup immediately, please visit http://lineup.xmradio.com.

Thank you again for your valued patronage and for making XM #1 in Satellite Radio.

Best Regards,

Who you kidding? This company is not going away.

At least we won't have to hear the OnStar ads over & over; for a while it sounded like they were competing with broadcast stations with "who can advertise OnStar the most"!

Per SkyReport.com (1-9-04), XM was planning the Traffic/Weather service debut in March.

I'd like to see their GPS/map weather overlay system integrated into common vehicles at a reasonable price!

Sirius can make $ adjustments or provide a feature to lure customers. With many vehicle mfg's supporting them, they'll keep pulling rabbits out of their hat. They're still surviving heavy "start-up" losses.

XM subscribers will want them around, that provides competitive pricing! :2:

Do not count out Sirius. At this weeks CES show they are previewing their satellite video service. this system will run through the same ant and tuner as the audio system. this is a category killer. they are a year ahead of xm with this feature!

Man....I hope Sirius holds on.
If Sirius goes, I :6: would expect our XM monthly rate will become "SKY HIGH".

MIKE

I STILL HAVE BOTH IN MY AV AND I LISTEN TO BOTH FOR GOOD NEVER REPEAT STUFF I LIKE SIRIUS. THEY BOTH HAVE GREAT PROGRAMING
WE WILL HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE.. GLENN

Sirius doesn't have enough bandwidth with their satalites right? They'd have to get rid of half their channels to accomidate one video feed.

I think Sirius is still kicking. I have sirius. I found their channels to be more my taste than xm.

XM gave all of their equipment to gm hoping people would subscribe. In relaity we know not everyone is NOT going to subscribe to the radio, so xm looses money.

On the other hand, Sirius sold their equipment to chrystler at cost making money off their equipment, so they don't have to worry if people actually buy the service. Thats how they were offereing free service with the purchase of a vehicle.

Well actually GM is a huge investor in XM hence why they make it available for the GM line....

Also ford and I think Dodge invested in Sirius to counterattack......

It is here somewhere

just out of curiosity (I have neither XM nor Sirius)...

why are there commercials for a subscription-based service?

to help keep subscription fees low....

Also MSNBC, Cnn, espn, fox etc run commercials all the time and not much they can do..but either play commercial or have dead air.....hehehe

I'm not kidding anyone.....I didn't say they were taking a dirt nap as of today. It will make their key advantage over XM a moot point however, making the challenge of getting subscribers an even more daunting task for Siri.

Siri's original business plan made mention of streaming audio and VIDEO. They were planning on being capable of streaming pay per view movies for example as well as hosting teleconferencing on the road, which was a far more advanced concept than that of XM. Not to mention the fact that Siri pioneered the field and XM piggy-backed on their work, leaving them with far less R&D to contend with. Last year XM had announced possible trouble with one of their satellites as well, which would be a blessing for Siri if they did have a critical failure one of these days.

I still prefer Siri's programming, and have noticed normal reception in areas where XM has gotten sketchy.

And the battle rages on. . . .. .. . . .

If this belongs elsewhere I apologize.
I am justknow coming into the future and am looking at a satellite radio. A co worker just got Siri and the selling point to me was the wireless rf mod. that allowed you to plug and play. So far I haven't found if XM has that. I understand some of the bleed thorugh issues with wireless rf mods, but like to flexibility to carry the unit from car to car to boat.....wherever you have a radio and cigarette lighter plug.

The pricing and offerings are not that much different for me to quible either way. Though I see that Siri has a lifetime(equip) type of subscritption that I have to learn more about.

I am wondering if our fine listeners here have any other tips to guide me.

To clarify, this graph reflects overall market trend -- as of today, XM (XMSR) closed at $27.50, Sirius (SIRI) closed at $3.44.

Check out the XM Roady - it has an adapter you buy separately that broadcasts an FM signal for your radio.

XM got the lead on this one...that doesn't mean they will conquer all!!

Remember our Ford friends created the production line that is now a standard that others use...and Money talks...GM has more money than Ford...

So without adding a huge other debate here...remeber that competition is good...and Sirius just got a later start.

Consider this: XM contract: GM...Sirius contract: Ford starting this model year!!
Additionally Sirius has deals for their aftermarket equipment that XM can't even touch ($150 vs $400+)!!!
Not to mention there is a very likely chance that soon we will all be able to choose XM or Sirius in any vehicle...just wait, it already exists in some foreign cars!!!

Sirius is not gone, nor should it be gone!! You PREFER XM, I PEFER Sirius; although I can say I think they are both great!! Someone else likes Ford (Why I don't know) and We like Chevrolet...it's simply a matter of preference...and competition. Sirius will likely make a deal for their customers soon...it's the nature of the beast!!

Commercial free point is very well taken. However, with the addition of Ford, Diamler/chrysler, and some Nissans, they will probably be around for a while. No one has mentioned (or I blindly missed it) the fact that Sirius has contracts with both the NHL and NBA. This is a huge bonus for many of our sportsfan customers. I still think it comes down to personal preference about the programming content and overall sound quality/reliability. I would bet one of my peas that Sirius will have to now lower their monthly sub rates. Time will definitley tell, and even though xm has to date done a far superior marketing job, Sirius is going nowhere anytime soon---unless they get gobbled up by someone named Murdoch or Ergin perhaps ;) just my .01

Kodiak,
Siri also completed a deal with the NFL maybe last month, another plus for sports fans.

honda is a big stock holder of XM.....
