I dont know when but I know what I want to do...

The switch in the cargo area would look cooler if the LED came on

:p I just spent 1/2 hour playing with wires trying to get the led to work in the cargo area, no luck :6:. The problem seems to be the fact that the light is lit by grounding the wire to complete the circuit as opposed to a normal switch arrangement where you feed power to the accessory (the light). Because of this, there is no way to get the led to come on with the cargo lights :cautious:.

I hate to say it but I am glad to hear that. I too spent like a hour last night tapping the Red wire from the light, then putting it on the switch. I even got a different switch and the box shows the + wires the switched ones, and we are switching negitives... Same thing you said... :6: :7: ???

If it were a regular light bulb, you could probably feed 12V in the pilot light ground terminal, and it would work. But LEDs are polarity sensitive, so that won't work in this case. If the switch is designed for switcing the positive, as I would assume they normally would be, then there is no way to hook it up so the LED works like you would expect. To get it to work, you will probably have to take the switch apart, remove the LED, and rewire it so that it is backwards from the current polarity.

However, a thought occured to me... if you hook it up with the free side of the LED grounded (the ground lead), and then also hooked the +12V in side of the switch to ground, and the output side of the switch to the cargo light circuit, you might just be able to get the LED to work like a pilot light: it is on whenever the cargo lights are off (so you can find the switch in the dark) and off when the cargo lights are on. This could be possible because there is likely to be enough current that can flow through the light bulbs and light the LEDs, without lighting the cargo lights. The downside is that there will be a constant trickle drain on the battery, and might lead to a dead battery after an extended time. The inadvertant power relay may help here, but it may also mean that the LED won't be on most of the time.

This will take a little experimentation... maybe we can think about it some more at Niagara Falls.

See you guys tomorrow, and drive safely!
