Well I'm thinking I made a big mistake today...I broke a cv last time out off roading...Come home took it out, replaced a couple bushings and rewelded a spot on my lift kit...I was waiting on a cv and figured I would go ahead and have it aligned while waiting on the cv to show up...I take off down the road and not a quarter mile from my house the wheel goes flying off with rotor and hub attached...Broke the caliper bracket, brake line, bearing and tore the fender cladding off too!!! Man did I feel like a DA ....but I thought most older 4x4s did not have to have the cv's in place to drive them.... The question is do you have to have the cv's in or did I just have a wheel bearnig go out??? Does anyone know the wheel bearing part number?? Thanks for any helpful info.  :needhug:

Shouldn't matter.

The CV axle sandwiches the bearing together between the outer cv and the axle nut/washer. Without the cv in place the bearing will eventually come apart.

I think the 2wds use the same bearings and just have a "dummy plug" in place of the CV doing the same job.

Yes you can drive your truck with out cv joints. But you do need part of the cv joint .If that makes any sence. If you break a cv joint pull it apart and remove the joint of the cv closes to the wheel.Be sure to remove the other parts of the cv joint not used.Than reinstall the splind part of the cv joint only back in.This is to hold your hub to your steering knuckle. The splinde part of the cv joint is what holds everything together. The rest of the cv joint is discarded untill you get a new cv joint.

You needed that in there :)

Without the full assembly, surprisingly, wheels can fall off.

Ouch! That was a hard-earned lesson.

`Hope you get it all fixed soon.  :cautious:

I'm sorry, but Google couldn't translate this into anything legible.

Been driving for months with stub shafts in front hubs due to front diff being 3.73 and rear end being H2 rear is 4.10.... Have recently removed front diff to get it re geared and have engine swapped. As long as you use the part of the CV that goes into the hub you don't have a problem. Do it without it... Well... Your wheel falls off..

Absolutely not, I learned the hard way.

Yes this is how you must do it. These are different than 2wd, you need the wheel hub section to hold it in
