Hello all,
Just found this site today. Lots of good info here but i couldn't find exactly what i was looking for so i registered and will now ask here.
I have a 2002 1500 Avalanche Z-71. In the dash there is a small storage area above the CD holder and below the 3 12Vdc power sockets. I would like to install a small CB inside this storage area. I think it would look good and neat in there but i have a few questions about it.
1. Has anyone done this before that could give me a few pointers.
2. What size CB will fit in this space. I need the dimentions so i can buy the right one.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Hi and welcome to the club, you can do a search and come up with all sorts of posts about just about anything, I spend way to much time reading and learning about other members mods. Try this link and see if it helps you if not do a quick search using different headings and see what pops up, its fun. Hope you enjoy the club as much as I do.

thanks for the replies. I tried the search function before i even registered here but i was unable to find the info. I am not talking about puting a CB in the place where the stock radio goes, but rather underneath it in the starage area. I know that it is a small space and that is why i was looking for some info from the experts. ;D
I guess that no one has put one in there yet. Well when i get it done i will post some pictures with details on how the install went. First i have to do some measurements.....

bbrennan, I am looking for a unit to go in the same place. I want it to be flush with the console so I am having a hard time finding one. Keep me updated if you find one.

Has anyone figured a way to hide the antenna? I don't really want a big wip antenna, so I would love some way to hide it. Any Ideas?

I found a great place. I installed a radioshack remote speaker near the gas pedal (actually facing it), behind the opening in the center console (near the firewall). I installed the CB in the center console - open the center console door, cut a rectangular hole in the front wall of the interior of the center console under the change holder. The CB will slide into place, in the hole you cut. The back of the CB will be under the cup holder. I ran the microphone wire under the bottom of the console and mounted the microphone bracket near the cup holder. This way the CB is out of sight (and out of the way) & I can hear perfectly from the remote speaker.

Aprgriggs, I am still looking for a CB that will fit in there. I would like to get one that has a forward firing speaker so thet i do not need an external speaker. Those are pretty easy to find. The other thing i would like to have is where the mic. hookup is in the back so thet the wires can be hidden when not used. That will give it the best and cleanest overall look. I will keep you updated on what i find out. I may just have to rebuild a CB to work the way i want.

Still looking for the right CB. No luck yet. I have found a piece of ABS plastic that could be cut to fit in place. All i would have to do is move the Mic. connector to the rear of the electronics housing. I'll be updating as i progress here. If i get anything cut i will take pictures and post them.

bbrenan,

I just mounted a CB in the spot you are talking about. I got a Uniden model PRO510XL that fits perfectly. I'll take a pic tomorow and post it if you are still wanting one. It was fairly easy to do.

The Cobra 75WXST may be another way to go.

bbrennan,

Here are a few pics of where I put mine and how it looks.

I'm having trouble getting the pics to post...let me try again.

Anyone know of a good spot to mount a CB or scanner in a 2009 LTZ Av with navigation radio?  Just got my Av and am new to the club.

First:   :welcome:

Here's an option from Jottodesk for $275

You could go with a C.B. like this:

Then you just need a clip on the side of the console to hang it on

And a small scanner like this could be mounted easier (even in the cup holder area of the center console) then the traditional ones that are 10" deep.

Thanks for the reply.  I would love to mount a scanner up top as in one of those pictures, but the garage door buttons/sun rooof control panel is in the way.  Would like the Jottodesk but I think some of the buttons below the A/C controls would be inaccessible.  Plus I'd have to do without cup holders.  I've already got a Cobra 29 LTD Classic so I guess my next best option is inside the center console?
Then where to put my CB amp and antenna.  A lot of work to do.  Thanks again.

Doesn't the 2009 have the sunglass holder up there? I have a small uniden scanner that I keep meaning to install up there in mine (2002).

No.  No sunglass holder up top in 2009 LTZ.  Sunglass holder is in front of cup holder on center console and doubles as ashtray if you pull the liner out.

I'm VERY Tempted to install a Cobra 75WxSt all-in-one hand unit like I have in my Wrangler.  I would replace the cig lighter with the plug for the Cobra (seen below in my Jeep).  The control box mounts behind the outlet and is about 3x3x2".  Plenty of room there.  Since I already have one, I would just need to purchase the control box and I can swap it between vehicles easily.

And the hand unit

My concern is a good, clean, receptive location for an antenna w/o having to hack and cut up too much metal or plastic. :)  I would install a small speaker under the dash to improve sound with it.  The speaker unit in the handset is rather weak, especially on the highway.
