I installed my NMO mount dual band cellular antenna this weekend. Nothing like drilling through the roof of a new vehicle to really get your blood pumping. >:D >:D >:D I drilled the hole just behind the rear roof rack bar, and fished the wire to the side column between the driver side doors. Ran the cable under the kick plate at the driver side door, and after zip-tying the cable to several convenient places under the dash, I fished it into the console under the cup holder.

I mounted the phone cradle in the console itself to keep from junking up the cab of the truck. The main junction box for the Nokia car kit is mounted under the cup holders.

I took the mounting bracket off of the speaker and slid it half way back into the ashtray bay. At this point, I turned it up into the track the ashtray slides on and pushed it forward. (extremely tight) I then screwed the speaker back on the bracket. (no cutting, no drilling, and a very solid mount.)

I mounted the mic on top of the steering wheel column just to the right of the hazard light button and fished the wire through the rubber boot on the shifter. It then followed the antenna cable into the console.
I didn?t want to make any permanent modifications to accommodate the mic or the speaker because I am planning to install the Uhltronics car kit adapter when the Avalanche kit is released. (hopefully in the next month or so.) The Uhltronics kit will allow me to tie the phone car kit into the stereo head unit / OnStar wiring so that it will utilize the existing OnStar mic and broadcast incoming voice over the stereo speakers. The kit will allow OnStar to remain fully functional, and will even mute the radio when a call comes in.
The antenna is a 3db Max-Rad dual band (analog / digital). I also have a 5db Wilson dual band for swapping out when I leave the big city.
If you can?t get a hold of me now, you're just not trying! ;D ;D ;D

Not wanting to go through all the drilling and wiring, do the little exterior antennas that attach to the rear or side windows help very much at boosting the phone signal? :B:

The reception really depends on the antenna itself. The mounting system you chose does not come into play as much as the "tuning" of the antenna you choose.
Wilson is supposed to have one of the best dual band antenna's on the market, and they offer the same antenna with three different mounts. I have the NMO mount to swap out with my short one when I'm out in the country.

Tuning Test

I plan on having this truck and my phone for quite some time to come, therefore I opted for a permanent install. I would definately choose a different mount for a '66 Corvette. (Of course, I would have to have one first. >:D >:D )
