Center Console Key

Ok I'm an idiot :p , but I can't believe I'm the only one...

I lost the keys to my Avalanche center console. The lock manufacturer was nice enough to print a number on the lock, so I thought "No problem".

Wrong!!! According to GM no keys can be ordered for this lock. And they won't identify the maker for fear of legal action. Therefore, you must replace the entire assembly. :8:

Does anybody have a clue as to who makes this lock, or what key-blank will fit it?

I've talked to several locksmiths who have not been able to locate a blank to make a key.

Thanks in advance!

Try the dealer and claim warranty.....See if they will do it for nothing.....

When I first picked up my Av, the dealer thought that they had lost the keys for my center console. They were going to order me a new console door and said that they had to replace the entire thing. Then the detail guy found the key. My dealer is an idiot but I guess that if they were going to order a new door, then thats what they have to do.

Good idea, but they already fell on the floor laughing at me when I came in and asked for a replacement key. They are wise to me.

Just glad it is locked OPEN, not closed.

Laughing at you because you lost the keys...... OK like you are the first one to lose the keys. ? ?Dont let them push you around like that. ? Hate yo yell ya but you are the customer the one tht pays those guys salaries.

Dont let them get away with that.

Why cant a locksmith pull the lock and rekey it? ?

Well, I didn't realize that the ignition key didn't work the console until I had the vehicle for two weeks. I never need to lock it, but when I was supposed to bring it in for service and the key didn't work, I looked at it and realized it took a totally different key. BIG DUHHH!!! :-[ Anyway I was in Ocala Florida and drove over to Ray the Locksmith and for $15 a nice elderly lady made me three keys for it. So if she could do it I'm sure there are others out there that could also. Good luck.

OK, lets see if I can help. My key # is 073 if you happen to match I will gladly make a copy and send to you. You know I have never taken the keys ou till now...they had taped them inside the console.

Let me know :0:

I don't know if this is the case for all center consoles, but I've tested my key in two friend's Silverado Z71 trucks (also 2002 year), and it worked...

Mine was not in the Truck when I got home. I live 300 miles from the Dealer. I was told to stop by wneh I was back in the area and the Service department would make me a key.

When I first bought my Avalanche I thought my console keys were missing until I found them taped to the change holder right inside the console. The dealer should be able to locate a key for you. I would talk to the General Manager of the Dealership. They can make and ignition key from the VIN. I would assume also that they have a way to look up the key for the center console. I'm sure they've had to open locked consoles before. They must have a key or an assortment.

If worst comes to worst let them change out the whole console, but make them pay for it. I would definitely call another dealership first. Especially since they laughed at you. They sound very unprofessional to say the least. :B: :8:

Well,

I did put my wounded pride aside and called GM (the national service number). I explained my story to them and they assured me that the dealer was correct. GM has no ability to sell replacement keys, and only offers the lock as part of a center console assembly.

The locksmith could make a key if he could identify the blank. He can't. So he sent me back to GM (national) to get the manufacture of the lock. They won't help (afraid their supplier might get involved in legal action).

My key was #135. A friend has key #071. It fits the lock, but doesn't open it. I'll try other locksmiths until I find one that can match the blank. They can rekey it then.

Thanks for the suggestions, folks!

Hang onto those keys and don't loose them because you are screwed if you do!

OK, a bit more information...

A buddy loaned me his #071 key, which fit my lock but didn't open it. I ran it down to my locksmith who identified the key as being one used for mail boxes. The good news is he now has a blank to use. He will fit the key to the lock for $30 if I bring him the console, which I will do.

I asked for the brand info to share, but he says there are only two mailbox keys made, so that just telling a locksmith that should help him find the blank.

Thanks again for all the help!

I've console key #069. Three digits implies only 1000 different keys. Around 90,000 Avalanches sold, assuming at least half have the console (probably more like 60,000) there are at least 44 other Avalanches with the same key. Just need to find them.

You weren't the only one to misplace that little key... :-[

:B: :B:

Why doesn't everybody look at their keys and see if we can help him out ?? - a copy is $2.00 plus a stamp!!

Hey AlphaBobRI, I was just wondering if you ever found a key for your center console, i bought an Av and the guy didnt have the keys for  my center console but my lock is a #135 and i saw that yours was too, so i was wondering if you found keys for yours could you sell me a copy? Thanks Mark

That's assuming he is still around and still has his Avy as well.
I know I would love to get the keys for mine as well but have no idea where to start.
Maybe we should start a new thread to see who on here still has their keys and the number off their lock.
that is if that would not be a problem.

03 they changed the console and dropped the lock.

Any good locksmith should be able to make you a new key to fit your lock. (Not just some clerk who makes keys and sells hardware too.) A pro locksmith can make a key or re-key your lock to work.
Not sure if a place like GM Parts Direct could get a GM key for you or not?

Dont know if you found a key yet, I searched ebay for chevy center console key and came accross an ad for a precut key to locks from 001 to 175 for 10.95 and free shipping, I ordered one but haven't got it yet. The seller is Keys4urride, should get the key in a couple of days, I'll let you know if it works.
