Hello all, I am new here and new to avalanche ownership. Well I have had one for a year and a half and have started to have a bit of a problem. I seem to have a battery drain that will sometimes drain in 2 weeks or sometimes it will have drained in 4-5 days. I have had a two company jump it with basically no problems, but the battery was very dead. Each time I have taken the truck for a ride about an hour each way to put some charge on the battery. I don’t daily drive it, it’s my hunting vehicle. But the other day I went to hop in and it was dead. No lights nothing on the dash.
I didn’t wNt to have to tow driver come out to jump me so I put in on a 4A charger for 24 hours. I can now get the dash to come on and when I open the door or put the key in the ignition the headlights flash repeatedly as well as the cluster if I am not mistaken. I also have a little red bulb on the pillar that blinks. When I try the ignition I don’t even hear a click. Could it be that my battery doesn’t have the cranking amps to get it going? I have seen that I should check for ground points on the truck as well. I just am not sure if my battery may be too weak or if it is a padlock or maybe even a starter issue.

Take the battery to an auto parts store and have them LOAD test it.

That will tell you the actual health of the battery.

A battery with a dead or dying cell can show good voltage but not have enough amps to run the starter.

Also, one of the sometimes overlooked sources for battery drain is the instrument cluster.

The clusters in these years of trucks were known to have defects.

There were even recalls back in the day for defective clusters.

Those recalls are no longer valid.

I have had to replace the clusters in both my 2003 and my 2004.

The cluster in the 2004 was draining the battery down if the truck was not driven for several days.

When I went to swap out the 2004 cluster, I found the old one had a sticker on it indicating it was a factory reconditioned unit that had been put in the truck back in the day when a previous owner had the recall performed.

A free and easy test for you is to simply remove the cluster from the dash after you have a confirmed good battery installed and see what happens.

The draw down stops, then you may have found your battery drain.

If the drain still occurs, look elsewhere.

Has anyone tested the alternator. I found out mine was bad the hard way

I have had issues starting my avalanche lately. Sometimes the battery is flat dead after a few days of being parked. At first I had no idea what the issue was. Last weekend, I heard a clicking from the junction box under hood. My park lp relay was clicking. I thought that was the issue, I changed it out and it fired right up. I thought the drain was gone but no. This weekend I went to crank the av and the battery was dead. Charged it and didn’t start. The clicking is back in the relay. I had a lo beam and indicator out. I haven’t changed them yet but I pulled the park lp relay to see if it would start and no go. The sockets at my headlights appeared burned. Does this sound like a ground issue or if I replace the bulbs and sockets, will that fix the relay clicking and help start my avalanche? Just want to try to get it running for Turkey season. Thanks for any help. I tried searching in this thread for similar problems but couldn’t find anything too similar. When the battery is charged everything on acc runs. When i try to turn the ignition nothing and then I hear the park lp relay clicking.
