SATURDAY MARCH 1ST, 2003
CHARLESTON, SC

20012831.jpg

Charleston,SC - The City of Charleston is located on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean at the juncture of the Ashley and Cooper Rivers. Occupying 88.14 square miles, Charleston has 7.6 square miles of a vital, bustling downtown which is home to the City's central business district. The Peninsula's dense urban streets set in dramatic contrast to the vast expanses of marsh which lay in buffer around the highlands. Over half of the City's population lives in West Ashley and James Island which lie just to the west of the Peninsula. West Ashley and James Island are a mixture of old and new; older neighborhoods with brick homes and graceful oak trees settle in with newer subdivisions and commercial centers. Johns Island, more rural in character, combines an intricate network of waterways with fertile farmland, residential property and limited commercial development. Daniel Island and the Cainhoy Peninsula, which lie east and north of the Peninsula, are among the most recently annexed areas of the City. The pristine Daniel Island, a full 4,500 acres in size, is just beginning to reflect the thoughtfully planned, environmentally sensitive community mapped out in the Daniel Island Master Plan. It is sure to be the future's complement to Charleston's historic downtown.

What is Hooters: A casual, beach-theme restaurant known for the Hooters Girls - the surfer girl next door. Hooters serves seafood, burgers, sandwiches and "nearly world famous" chicken wings.

Located on historic Charleston Harbor, Patriots Point is home to USS YORKTOWN (CV-10), the Fighting Lady. The first USS YORKTOWN (CV-5) sank at the battle of Midway on June 7, 1942. Onboard the decks of this famous World War II aircraft carrier, you can relive a momentous time in America's history. The Fighting Lady contains all the evidence of her past; one can see, touch, feel and smell the past, where young Americans fought and died to turn the fortunes of war in the Pacific.

Moored next to her is USS LAFFEY (DD-724), a World War II destroyer. ?LAFFEY ?survived the onslaught of Japanese kamikaze attacks while off Okinawa as Radar Picket Station #1 on April 16, 1945. She became known as "the ship that wouldn't die."

Also moored alongside are the United States Coast Guard cutter INGHAM (WHEC-35), which fought in the convoy battles of the North Atlantic and sank a German U-boat; and the diesel attack submarine USS CLAMAGORE (SS-343).

Onboard YORKTOWN are dozens of displays devoted to maritime and naval history, the Congressional Medal of Honor Society's museum and headquarters, and more than two dozen historic military aircraft are on exhibit. Ashore is a full-size Navy Advance Tactical Support Base from the Vietnam era, and our gift shops.

One thing we do need (unless I missed it) is someone to post WHERE and WHAT TIME we are meeting in Charleston for this March 1st event. Just make sure it is somewhere where everyone can find it easily!

Very good then.

12 noon at Hooters in Charleston.

If you could, post some directions for all of us who haven't been there and it will be official! I think seafood is a great idea as well. It goes good with the Coastal area!

All of those north of Orangeburg can meet at LOVE CHEVROLET at 9am to cruise down together. Others south of that location can sit on the edge of the interstate at entrance ramps and join us as we pass by. Any other ideas, for picking up straglers along the way would be apprectiated. I don't know of any "stops" along the way.

Hooter's is in North Charleston. It's across from Northwoods Mall. If you are coming from columbia you have can get off at the Ashley Phosphate exit and turn left at the light...then go over the overpass and turn left on northwoods blvd...as you approach the mall you will need to get in the right lane and take a right as the road deadends then hooter's will be about 150-200 yards on your right just past the movie theater

Don't sweat the details today,Les is on it. Les also can
tell WiKi about Bubba Gump's.

All right....I had some mexican food with Carriles tonight and here is maybe a preliminary schedule(a.k.a subject to change). Meet at Hooters 'bout noonish, eat drink be merry. Drive downtown to see all the beautiful houses along rainbow row and the battery, swing by a place called the Market. It has alot of shopping and restraunts along it that has Charleston trinkets and things, especially things made of Sawgrass like baskets, pot holders and such. Then drive across the Cooper River to Patriots Point and see the ships and other displays there. I can call around to see about the tours to Fort Sumter, if they leave from Patriots Point and how much that is. From there, maybe dinner somewhere, something like that. That should take up a majority of a day. But we still have a little while to plan and I am open to any other Lowcounty inputs?
