I am in the process of ordering a 2500 4x4 and found a little bit of info on the $165 snowplow prep package. There is no snow in Southern California so I ignored it at first.

I found some additional info on the VYU snow prep package for other GM trucks. According to the document, the package contains:

Upgraded front torsion bars F60
145 Amp Alternator/Generator KG3
Provision for roof lights TRW
Transmission cooler KNP
Forward Lamp Harness (great for extra fog or driving lights)

If that is the case, it has got to be one of the best bargains going for those who are ordering a 2500.

If anyone has a snow prep pkg, can you confirm the items? ... and if there is an upgraded front torsion bar does it affect the ride or provide more front end lift? According to the literature, I found, the upg TB allows the vehicle to be raised higher to support the extra weight of the snow plows. (Do I hear cheap lift kit?)

There is a detailed discussion from gm-trucks.com that explains the different torsion bars and keys available on GM trucks.

Aside from the torsion bars, the higher amperage alternator and trans cooler are worth the price alone.

Sorry, I really can't comment on how the package performs, but I found that I could not get a '02 2500 with a sunroof AND that package.

I'm not sure if things have changed in '03, but if you were looking for a sunroof, you might have to look into it.

:)

Some things to consider:

1. The higher torsion bars are to offset the weight of the plow - may affect your ride quality without it.

here is the list of current torsion bars:

15048307-LH (code XK) (Max torque 4553)
15048308-RH (code XK) (Max torque 4553)

15048309-LH (code XL) (Max torque 4626)
15048310-RH (code XL) (Max torque 4626)

15712407-LH (code WX) (Max torque 4863)
15712408-RH (code WX) (Max torque 4863)

15048311-LH (code XM) (Max torque 563:cool:
15048312-RH (code XM) (Max torque 563:cool:

15058267-LH (code YH) (Max torque 5913)
15058268-RH (code YH) (Max torque 5913)

15712409-LH (code WY) (Max torque 5913)
15712410-RH (code WY) (Max torque 5913)

15528957-LH (code GG) (Max torque 6709)
15528958-RH (code GG) (Max torque 6709)

15712411-LH (code WZ) (Max torque 7267)
15712412-RH (code WZ) (Max torque 7267)

15528963-LH (code GK) (Max torque 8615)
15528964-RH (code GK) (Max torque 8615)

15528965-LH (code GL) (Max torque 8782)
15528966-RH (code GL) (Max torque 8782)

15732338-LH (code XG) (Max torque 9054)
15732339-RH (code XG) (Max torque 9054)

The 2500 comes with the GK's

The prep package is a good deal from the factory if you need it.

I have considered the GL's or the XG's because of the extra weight of the Whipple, intercooler and other stuff + the FrontRunner.

Wow... you have done your homework on those bars!

I would guess that the snowplow pkg would have the stiffer bars. Anyone who plans on adding a few things under the hood, a winch, new bumper, bigger tires, etc. would benefit from the stronger bars.

Overall the package is a good deal for someone that benefit from any of the upgrades. It only works if you are ordering a vehicle. I have not seen a single snowplow pkg out here in Southern California.
