When I bought my 2004 AV, I was told to bring the car back in for a breakin checkup after the 750 mile breaking period. They would check and adjust everything.

Was this bogus? I can't find any reference to such a checkup anywhere in the written owners material. ???

Sounds to me like they just want to get some $$$ out of you.

cha....ching!
Excuse me if I sound...uh....pessimistic......... Any visit to the dealer's service department is about money..........your money becoming their money.....

Read your manual.....look up the section on break-in.........Also be sure to look in the maintenance schedule for the 750 mile service.......lol....it doesn't exists!
Hell you can look in the manual right here on line........

They will do "anything" to appear like they REALLY CARE......this sets up the relationship where they keep sticking their hand in your pocket......and this is where they make 90% of their money.

I love that new ON-star commercial on the radio where the lady calls in because her check engine light is on......the onstar guy does a "diagnostic" for her and tells her she needs to get her vehicle to a service center "right-away".....roflmfao......

Hey....if you got the time to spend stopping by the service dept and it's all free.....go for it.......

The first thing that would tip me off to the fact that this is bogus (other than the fact that his lips were moving) is that they think the break-in period is 750 miles. I don't know about '04's, but according to the '03 manual it is 500.

What exactly are they going to adjust, LOL.

bshef, funny post :D

My dealer offered a free oil change at 500 for breakin, and wanted to check tightness of alloy wheels, top off fluids, etc. All at no charge. Unfortunately, I bought the truck in CT and I live in NH so I never availed myself to the offer.

I'd agree the dealer is hoping to make more of your money "his".

Do consider, however, having your oil changed around the 1,500-2,000 mile mark, to get that break-in oil outa there. Reset the DIC (Oil Change Monitor) then go from there.

that's really nice :0: :B: I'd do that just to ge the free oil change. The rest is just a bonus, and certainly a nice gesture (y)

While I don't think it's a bad idea per se to change the oil early the first time, I've seen absolutely no documentation instructing to do so. Nor am I convinced that there is some kind of special "break-in" oil from the factory, unless you just mean the oil that is in there during the break-in period. Again, not a bad idea, but I'd think if it were that big of a deal there would be specific instruction to do this, particularly since it could be profitable for service departments. On the flip side, it could be considered a HUGE waste of oil if everyone did this at 1500 miles.

Can't hurt the truck, I suppose.

Thanks folks for the info. I drove out of the way to buy my AV, so it's not worth it to drive all the way back there for a fluid level check... even if it's free. I'll wait until the first oil change I guess.

After updating my vin number on the myGMlink website, the service schedule says that I am overdue for a transfer case replacement. But I just purchased it 12/30/03. What is this? ???

From myGMlink:
Transfer Case Fluid Replacement
Add fluid as needed. A fluid loss could indicate a problem; repair as needed. Check vent hose at transfer case for kinks and proper installation.
Interval:

01/05/2004
PAST DUE

I think that an oil change after the first 1000-1500 miles is a good idea also. My first change I did myself at about 2000 and found that the magnetic oil pan plug had metal fileings on it. Checked with GM and they said it was a normal to have fragments from the assembley process. If I had known that it would have been changed earlier, just for piece of mind you know.

I believe transfer case fluid is to be replaced at 50k.

I finally got a response from myGMlink website. They said that the transfer case fluid is 50K miles. The website was just messed up.

I bring my Av into the local GM dealer at least once monthly!! I usually find something to ask about, just to have it checked!! ;)
(WARRANTY work is WONDERFUL stuff (y) )

I think THIS month, it will be the "SOFT FEEL" of my brakes; that way when I put my DUBS on I will feel better until I get my brake upgrade!!!

:)
