Chevy Molded Mudguards - No Good With Flares

I picked up a Yellow WBH, with Flares and Side Molding last week, and thought that the Chevy Molded Mudguards would be a nice addition to the look.

Boy was I wrong. They stick out WAY too far, especially on the front. I don't like the look at all. I'm taking them off. I guess I just blew $72. Oh well, I guess I'll have to eat at home for the next few days. ;)

PS. not only that, but believe it or not, those guards have such a wind drag on them that they cut over 2 mpg (from 16.5 down to 14.5) after they were installed.

Are they sticking out a long ways because the edge is wrapping around the outside of the wheelwell flare? Perhaps you could trim the top edge so that they fit better. Don't know how that will affect your gas mileage though. I'm going to have to do a test and see if they affect my gas mileage that much too.

I thought about trimming them at first, but so much of it sticks out to the side of the wheel flare as you mention, that I'd have to cut about 1/2 of it off. They don't really cover much of the front wheel from the bottom view (maybe half).

It was just a dumb idea to put them on with flares. I think the flares do a good enough job on their own.

I might keep the back ones on though. They are not as bad. And the white bowties from the back add a little something.

GM/Chevy recommends not using the molded mud guards with the flare package. I had the dealer stick on the flat guards on my WBH. I have the flare package plus the running boards. The dealer put on all four flat flaps, and they look and function quite nicely thus far.

HEY, JOE YOU CAN OFFER THEM FOR SALE HERE, THIS IS WHERE i BOUGHT MINE.

I'd love to see pictures of the fit, or lack of it. I can't picture the problem I guess without seeing it on film. :p

My dealership is the best. They are going to take the guards off for me at no cost, AND refund my $72, just to keep me happy.

Oh yeah, I offered to buy a set of nerf bars thru them in exchange. (cost price). :)

I'll try to get a picture of what it looks like before they come off tomorrow, but its difficult to show it properly in a picture.

Sounds like a good dealership, hang on to them. And definately post those pics if ya can. We're all pic fiends here and need our daily fix. >:D

Here is a pic. ?Its not easy to show the perspective, but look how far it sticks out past the flare, and the bowtie is way off center...

Yeah, that's not good at all. I can see how you might lose gas mileage with those sails sticking out in the breeze like that.

That is one good looking truck! Same color and trim and.......... as mine lol. I ve been looking for a set of mud flaps to help keep the paint on the lower fender chip free. When you say "flat" what do ya mean, thin and made of rubber or plastic??
Can you post a pic of the "flat" mud guards and a part number
Thanks

I can't find a pic, but I can post the part numbers prices and descriptions that I have on this Chevy Truck Accessories flyer I got. Maybe you can find a site that will show you a picture of them, or perhaps your dealer can.

Splash Guards:
Flat with Contour (11.10" Wide, Black):
With White Bowtie Logo - PN 12497445 - $12.00
With Gold Bowtie Logo - PN 12497961 - $12.00

I take that back...

If you go to the Avalanche web page at chevrolet.com and check out Accessories there is a place that you can download the Accessory Catalog for Avalanches. In there they have this picture of the two different types of Splash Guards along with a bunch of other stuff.

The molded ones definitely do stick out far on one with flares. Anyone with an 02 looking for molded flaps? I have brand new ones front & back for sale. Never used. Didn't match my 03 as well as I would like.
Traz

Traz,

The '03 Moulded Splash Guards are actually a different part number than the '02 ones and match the cladding perfectly. Perhaps you can swing a swap with your dealer?

I had picked them up at a GTG in WV. The sales guy there didn't have the 03's in stock but said he used the 02's on his 03 & they matched OK. My husband compaqared them & said they were real close. Maybe the light was different then because I can definitely see the difference. Don't know if my dealer or any others around will swap them. I had gotten a pretty good deal. I was hoping someone in the local group was going to get some. I would have them get the 03's & swap them if they needed 02's. Or sell them & but my 03's. If not I may try to find some of the Back to Black I have heard about & apply that. It will probably darken them a little. Right now they are still in box.

Hi are they still for sale? If so do you have any pics i can see? Do they Match the grey Clad? thanks, Ron

Ron,

Traz's mudflaps are the '02 model version and match the '02 cladding color perfectly. There's a different part number for the '03 Molded Mud Flaps that matches the darker '03 cladding. Here's a pic of my truck with the wrong mudflaps that the dealer put on originally (02 flaps on my 03 AV), which is the same thing that happened to Traz it sounds like. You can see the difference in color.

 They look perfect . I've been looking for those on line I even went to a Gm site and didn't find them.
Do you know if there still for sale.

GM still sells them, certainly. I dunno if Traz is still selling or not. You might try a PM or see if there is an e-mail address listed under user profile.

Traz. Do you still have those molded mud flaps For sale? I'm very interested. Thanks, Ron

Just curious, are the flat guards made out of the same material as the molded mud guards? Are they made out of rubber or plastic? I was wondering if they were more flexible.

Hey, newbie here, but I may have some mug flap info that will help. My brother has a silveado with flares, he install molded mud guards by "Husky Liner" they fit great around the body and flare and don't stick out too far and they were only $58 for all 4. Check on line or your local parts shop they are pretty widely available. Hope it helps

I have a set of "flat" mudguards with the bowtie :B: that I never installed. If anyone is interested I paid 45.00 on ebay. I have the gray body side molding and did not like the black flaps. Email me for more info. I also have a K&N aiir intake system that came off my 1500 when I traded it in, if anyone is interested. It was barely used and I have a recharge kit for it also
