Hmm I wonder if Chicago residents could make the case that the AV is a pickup truck and not a SUV. That is if pickups aren't also taxed more... It didn't say in the story.

Unfortunately these are the kinds of things that happen when cities/towns/states have low revenue - look for the people who they can tax more that will either roll over or are considered pariahs in their area. Just one guy's opinion.

The loophole is a Federal Tax, this one's a City of Chicago SUV user's tax. The news story tells it all, including how the city's own road department calls the city's argument for raising the tax "bogus". The "real" reason (not given, of course) is that the politicians see big SUVs and think Deep Pocket$$$
