Chrome Door Handle?

A

aprgriggs

GUEST
I have seen the JP Custom Chrome Handles and have really been thinking of adding this to my AV. Has anyone done his mod and if so can see some pics?

Sorry if there is already a thread on this I searched and couldn't find anything.

thanks

Read the thread from Pendulum about new products ...should be back a page or 2...he describes how to do it....you have to remove stock....remove lock from stock & install in new one....

The ones he sells are black so painting to match may be required from a body shop...but he said he was looking at getting them painted for a small charge....

good luck

Ok make that more than 2 pages >:D

Here it is

Check it out ...read all the pages.....

The handle itself is chrome, but the oval surrounding the chrome pull is black. You'd have to paint it to match the body color of your truck.

Hey guys, no, unfortunately we don't make the door handles, but we're going to be painting them for you soon.
The price for each door handle will be $40 each. We'll just need your VIN and we'll paint them to match.

Look for the option on the website soon.
Turn around time for the door handles painted will be about two weeks at the most. The shop we're working with works them in when they can.
The few door handles we'll be taking them doesn't take priority over their everyday work, can you believe that!?
We're second, the nerve.

i did the chrome door handle mod after my buddy did it on his Duramax. the paint job was so bad the first time that the dealer had to buy him another set. when that set came and the paint job was completed he installed them. after the install you could see where the paint was flawed on the bezel. it had an orange peel affect to it. and when you pulled on the handle you could see the overspray on the top part of the handle just above the keyhole.
so here is what i decided to do. i helped him install the handles, so i was familiar with what needed to be done already. when i removed the stock handle from the vehicle i proceeded to remove the blue handle from the blue bezel. not so hard. just time consuming, because you have to be careful not to damage the paint on the bezel while driving out the pin which holds it in. then just put the chrome one in it's place, and drive the pin back in. my buddy was very impressed by my technique. so was the parts guy who ordered them for me. :B:
then of course you have to do the tailgate handle to match. this one is alot easier. well, if they get the paint job right. i bought the EXT chrome handle and bezel. i had the bezel painted blue. the dealer for some reason painted it '03 blue (arrival blue) instead of indigo. went back and it was another color. finally they matched the paint, but the quality was not up to par. they told me to mount it (i complained about not being able to lock my tailgate) and bring it back in three weeks for them to do it again. :8: not that big of a deal i guess, but i had prematurely installed the chrome handle thinking the bezel would be ready the next day. when it wasn't i figured i would use the stock bezel but it would not fit over the Cadi handle.
all in all, it looks really good regardless of the sorry paint job. :7:

?

So the handles look good on an AV. ?Do you have any pics or detail info on how to remove the handles so I don't have to paint. ?thanks

i'm going to attempt this from memory o.k.! someone correct me if i leave something out.
first, remove the sail panel ( this is the panel mounted right behind the mirror). it just pops off if you pull on it from the back with your fingers. you could also pry out door lock button at this point, but since it has such small unforgiving clips on each side i would leave them on during removal. however, they will need to come off during installation to line them up with lock trigger in door. they are easier to remove from inside the panel once removed.
second, you need to remove the door switch panel. you can pull up on it, or you can use a small screwdriver in each of the little slots on the front edges of the panel to release the locking tabs. be careful!! i've seen the edges of the door panel damaged if not removed right. once removed disconnect the wiring harnesses.
third, you will see a screw in the middle of the panel behind the grab handle ( if the mounting tab for the handle is broken, which they often do, stop!! take your truck to the dealer for warranty repair. when you get your truck back continue with handle swap). you want to do this because they will say you broke the handle when you swapped out for chrome Cadi one's.
fourth, look for two more screw's. one at the rear corner from where the switch panel was removed from and the other at the bottom of the door panel.
fifth, lift the panel straight up and out to expose the courtesy light harness and speaker harness. diconnect both.
next, you need to remove the small black plastic cover inside of the door to the right of the exterior handle as you look at the truck from the rear. you will have to also remove the plastic adhered to the the door just enough to give you access to the handle screws. i believe there are three screws holding the handle if i remember correctly. one accessible from the small hole revealed once the black plastic cover is removed. the other two will be accessed from inside the door itself. warning!! the power window lift/lower bar is extremely sharp. >:D be careful working around it. you will also have to removed the door lock actuator rods connected to handle. they just pop out of the plastic connectors.
now with the handle removed find a nice clean and padded place to work. at the top of the handle you will need to flatten the beveled area of the pin. once flatten drive the pin out with a hammer and a punch. be careful not to hit the handle with the hammer or scrath it with th eside of the punch. it's a good idea to put a semi thick cloth between the handle and punch. once out, install the new chrome handle.
do everything in reverse now. ditto for the other front door.
now for the rear doors. remove screw from behind door pull handle. then, remove the second screw from the bottom front edge of the door panel. by the way you could pry out the door opening handle trim at this point, but again something that has unforgiving little tabs on it. you can still remove the panel with little effort. just have to lift up on handle and pull panel up, out , and to the front. piece of cake. from this point everything is pretty much the same. remember to remove the door lock button before assembly.
i suggest you install the inside chrome Cadi handles like i did. you are already there with this install. you might as well just through 'em on. real easy to do. just unbolt the old one. disconnect the door release actuator rod, and hook up the new handle.
that pretty much covers it though. i know i left something out i just can't remember what. this should be everything however. if you have questions or run into problems shoot me an e-mail or a post. ;D

JASON any way of just selling the chrome exterior handle without the painted part? So we can do whatr was described above?

Or am I off to the junk yard?

GM sells the chrome door handle from the Ecalade EXTs that should fit on our AVs.

Sorry, but I don't have the part number in front of me. Goo sent it to me one time.

It's an item on my modification check list. :)

Here's the link Roar is talking about.

EXT chrome handles

The first item in the list is the chrome tailgate handle and the others are the chrome door handles. The price list was generated from GMparts but as everyone knows you can get them from any of our site sponsors including JPCustoms. The door handles come with a black bezel. JPCustoms will be offering them painted to match your AV soon.

? Goo is correct. ?i just read this the other day. ?must have slipped my mind. ?hopefully the paint job is better than my local dealers work. >:D
? the EXT handle that was mentioned in that post/thread also needs the EXT bezel that goes around it. ?the one on the AV will not fit over the chrome handle without forcing it. ?in any event you may damage the handle. ?besides, you want a painted bezel after adding a nice chrome handle, right? ;D
? the part number is:

Bezel PN - 88944317
?
P.S. no one offers just the chrome handle that i know of.

Here's what the handles looked like on the concept AV.

Off to the junk yard to find just the chrome part ...hopefullyyyyyyyyyyy...

I still love that concept vehicle.......love the fuel fill...chrome steps in rear bumper etc etc etc...

MOD time.

? in goo929's concept picture it looks as though the tailgate handle is the one that is currently used on the AV? ?yes/no? ?and also, i have my bezel in hand right now and it does not look the same. ?the key hole seems to be at the bottom center rather than at the right of the bezel. ?am i the only one seeing this?
? i say that this is not the EXT handle because it has angles that i'm not seeing in this picture. it looks contoured like the stock handle. and the bezel is definitely not the same. ?however, it is a nice looking ride. ?i like the use of the chrome on the bumper, gas filler, and the tow hooks. ? rims look good too.

Hey Goo929,

A little off-topic, but do you happen to know who makes those wheels on that concept Av photo you posted above? Me likey lots!

True. ?The Concept bezel did change before going to production. ?The tailgate handle does look like the our production one. ?Here's a closeup of the EXT tailgate hande.

there is definitely a difference goo. the EXT handle is the one i have on my AV. i had the bezel painted blue. i wish i could post pictures but i do not have a digital camera. nor do i know how to include them in the post.
i talked to a buddy who wants to get rid of a digital camera to buy a new one. he also viewed the sight with me the other day at work. he told me how i could include attachments such as pictures and links to other sights as well. i kind of forgot, so i will be asking him again. :2:

I installed the chrome handles this weekened. Had to do something as my painted cladding appt was canceled this week :(

Lorinser_1, how would you rate the difficulty of your install? and did you have the handles painted, or did you use the stock bezels? :B:

I rate it about a 4 out of ten. You have to remove the door panel and in the jam (on the door) remove a rubber plug that hides one of the bolts on the front doors. All you need is a 10mm socket, 7mm and a 10mm wrench for the hard to reach bolts. There is plenty of room in the door to work. While installing the speakers/outer door handle I put in the inner chrome handle and the Deneli window switch. (see Pic attached).
I ordered the handles from Gmpartsdirect and they came painted black.

I know not everyone has the ability to do this because of down time, but-

what about just taking the outside door handles apart from the bezel, taking the inside door handles off, and finaly the tailgate handle. Then take them down to your local chrome shop and have them all chromed?

It appears, from a previous post at least, that the handles are able to be taken apart, and then you don't have to worry about mis-compatible or misaligned parts.
Most of all, the bezels would be the great original paint and would match perfectly.

I might have to go down to a junkyard and see what they look like to begin with, and see if this would be a viable option.

Also, I was wondering if the EXT bezels are finished in a gloss black, such that they would not need to be painted if you had the black AV, or if you could live with a black bezel?

I made a call to a local Cadi dealer, and he told me the finish was gloss, and had a clear coat on it. Therefore it would not need to be painted if you liked the black color. Of course, I would rather see it for myself, but was still curious nontheless.

Thanks.
Malcolm

They are indeed painted gloss black same as my factory installed handles. I think its strange that they come gloss black, seems like they should come flat for painting to match.
