On my '02 I'm wanting to take out the cigarette lighter completely and replace it with a permanent digital voltmeter thats made for the slot. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get it out and its mounted into what I believe is the entire lower half of the dash. Anyone know an easier way?

Instrument Cluster has a voltmeter yeah it is analog but for a car/truck That is all that is really required.

And where the cig socket is in the avy under that lift up cover..... a gage would be hard to see and read.

So I ask not to be mean but to learn - WHY?

Did you ever figure this out? I was looking to do something similar but cant figure out how to get behind this

I think this is how it is done.
Disconnect battery ground wire.
Unplug wire on back of outlet.
Then I think the outer shell unscrews from inner part and comes off.
Once off push/pull the rest out from front.

Now I could be wrong.

i don't think you're " wrong" but i think you misunderstood my question. I'm wondering ( and i think OP was asking) how to get access to swap out the cig or aux outlets with something different. If i want to simply take out one of those and swap a new one in it's place your directions are pretty much spot on. The challenge is trying to replace it with something different. On the 2002 dash it looks much more involved than it seems on later years

Something like this for example

remove the center console between seats and you have full access to behind the cig lighters.
not hard couple of bolts inside center part and If I remember under cup holder and where the CD storage is.

Yeah 2002 has CD storage

I fitted USB charging ports (No Voltmeter), replacing the ciggy lighters on my 07, that's a fairly easy task for removal, the nuts on the new sockets wouldn't spin flush to the back & the holes were fortunately slightly too small requiring a small amount of sanding on the new ports until they were able to be pushed in as a friction fit. Three years on they are still in place without the nuts.

yea, it should be simple but on the '02 its a totally different ball game

Correct, my 2002 has CD storage. I know how to get that out but there is still much more to this, at least i think so

removal of the center console that's actually between the seats is a piece of cake. the part thats directly under the dash has me perplexed. i was out at the junk yard recently and tried it on one of theirs and ended up breaking that piece because there were " internal" screws that i couldn't see. even with most of that out it seems like they aren't going to be accesible without removing the wholde lower dash including the glove compartment , from the passenger side over. i didn't have all the right tools but even so it's just not obvious to me how this all comes apart

Mr Chips I think there are 2 bolts inside the CD holder or the cubby above.
ONce you remove them it comes out easy peasy as I had mine out 22 years ago to install at the time a SONY XM radio.

Maybe if you go way back in this section and down in the Audio video you can find some threads/posts where someone describes a bit better then I how to remove it.

when I did it I just figured it out by removing any bolt I saw
feeling where it was held in place and checking there for bolts

If anyone cares or is searching the future here's an update: I pulled out the radio bucket today as a part of my double DIN upgrade and you CAN access the aux and cig outlets holes and wires for an '02 from there .

I pulled the 2 AUX plugs out and wired 1 USB and one USB-C charging ports, both with on/off buttons off the always on Cig lighter circuit
This way if am at the beach or camping or whatever i can charge my stuff even with the ignition off.

It looks like the other alternative is to remove the entire lower dash from glove box to steering wheel, at least that's what it looks like.
