Cladding Paint Fusion vs. Dupli.color bumper coating

I guess I should add my $0.02 here.

I painted my cladding with the Dupli-color Bumper Paint.
It looked amazing!!
Two weeks later, it was time to wash my truck again. I am going to try the Krylon this time, as my pressure washer took the paint off. It looked a mess, so I turned it to 'jet' and used the water to strip the rest of the paint. Now, back to the faded original.

karr, please read my topic I posted in this section abotu the Fusion prep. I would love for your input

That is all that I did.  It is coming up to a year since I did that and it still looks great.  I had to leave my AV out all winter and I live in Nebraska. So if that does not tell you something I don't know what will. Heck small hail has hit my AV and the paint on the cladding is holding up great.

I even got some wax on the fusion painted cladding and used everything I could to get it out... even rubbing alcohol. I finally ended up painting over it, new paint blended in great!

Just make sure you clean your cladding really well before painting. Fusion will bond with cladding but not to Dirt.

Thanks for letting everyone know. Another good reason to go with the Fusion.  Did you prep your cladding???

Yes a very high pressure sprayer will take off the paint unless you used a plastic bonding primer. I occasionally use my electric washer on my rig, but stay far away when cleaning the painted cladding.

I took my AV to the car wash and got really close too my bed covers. I want to see if they would peel.  I am planning on repainting them because I some junk on there and they dragged and took some paint off. Anyway the paint that was not chipped held up good but the chipped parts came off.

Looking back make sure you have full coverage of paint on the cladding and don't hold the pressure washer to close to your paint.  Pressure washer will even chip off clear coats and the paint on your truck if you get to close.

Ok, yesterday I repainted my cladding. I used the Krylon Fusion this time. I make sure to have a really good prep as well. I decided to go with the Gloss Black this time, rather than the Satin Black. Let me tell you that thing shines in the sun!

The one thing I will give credit to Dupli-Color is that it seems alot less likely to run. I don't know if its just a thicker paint or what. I know that when I am painting in the booth, I can change the amount of gloss by the amount of reducer I use. That could be the case with premixed spray cans as well. I had two spots that had runs. I simply wiped them immediately with alcohol, and resprayed about 30 seconds later. This gives the alcohol time to evaporate while leaving the paint wet enough to blend the respray. I will add that way of fixing will only work on a textured surface such as the cladding. I would never try that approach on a smooth metal surface and expect a good result. However, on the cladding, you cannot tell where the touchups had occured.

this all sounds pretty cool. im thinking about doing it. my truck is white, and i like the gray look. do you think the krylon fusion pewter gray would work well in giving it a factory look?

MMMM don't know about that. I would cut some thin plastic out and paint it... then tape it to your AV, see what you think then.

Otherwise I guess you can always go darker if you dont like the color.

There is also a Hammered Gray out there. I bet that would look good.

This looks great, I am looking for the best way to do my cladding soon. Is it more of a black color or just dark gray actually looking at it? It's a little hard for me to tell.
Also, is it fairly easy to do it yourself or do you suggest getting someone professional to do it?

I am getting my Cladding dipped except the covers and the running boards and the diamond plated pieces I want to paint them black I hope it will be done around X-Mas.  I will have Pics up when I get it on!  So you think The Fusion will hold up on the running boars?

I painted my sail panels with Fusion satin black.  It made a tremendous difference.  I masked everything and sprayed on three or four light coats.  The key is to let the paint dry between coats and don't spray it on thick.  Also use long strokes and overlap them slightly otherwise you will get runs.  I did my bed panels to practice.  Go for it.

When y'all did the bed covers and sail panels and all that up top, did y'all take the covers off and tape off where it goes to the bed? Or just leave the covers on and spray it all with the weather stripping too and not tape off anything but the window and third brake light?

I Gatorbacked the entire upper back side of my AV. I removed the side box lids, removed panels, and taped everything else in place on the truck. I taped off all the whether stripping too. nothing but the plastic got painted! My AV went from old to NEW! Love it.....  It has been almost two years since it got painted and I am noticeing fading on the panels abit and on the sail fin. Probably recoat this summer... EASY AS PIE.

I actually finished my truck this last weekend. It's AMAZING. It looks 100 times better and brand new. So much more of an aggressive look and flows amazingly with my 5% window tint and black rims. Will try to put the pictures up within the next few days! Thanks for all the input everyone

Please post pics!!!  My AV is the green color.  I am wanting to paint satin black and do black wheels, but i am torn between the Fusion or just doing the Refinish Restorer.

I think i will like the black look better, but i am just very indecisive  :E:

I used the krylon fusion satin black for mine and it looks legit. I couldn't be happier with the look. It was a lengthy weekend job but definitely worth it and the 60 or 70 bucks. I'll make sure to post the pics some time tomorrow.

Here's the pic. Not quite sure if I'm posting this right as an attachment.

Looks good man.  I am still undecided.  I do not want the paint to look "spotty".  How did it turn out?  I just dont want it to look like it was spray painted...lol

Yeah I definitely hear you. But no it doesnt look spotty. If you know what you're doing so far as spraying even coats for the most part then you're good. The paint actually blends together really well even if you don't spray it perfect. It turned out really good and looks just as if the cladding came in black. Can't even tell it's a coat of paint over it. I love it.

I got Turtlewax Ice wax on my bumper and can't get it all off.  I think it's finally time to do the Fusion paint job.  Thanks for the info!

Yeah man there was another member who got wax on his cladding and wouldn't rub off but the fusion covered it right up. It's definitely a good choice.
