Anybody installed one of the clear bras from 3M or the like. If so what did you cover and what did you pay.

Thanks,

Axeonefour

To help with others searches the product is known as XPEL.....

I have not used it on my AVY...but know of people who use it on their cars and they like it very much as it is .8mm thick and the kits are cut to fit the front end.....

I think you mean to say 8mil thick. ;)

8mm would be more than 1/4 in thick (about 0.315 inch). 8mil is 0.008 inches, like several layers of trash bags.

I'm sorry, please have mercy!

But really, there is a big difference between mm and mil! ;D

Penalty for correcting a senile senior moderator? Hell, he ought to get a reward not only for knowing the difference but for proof reading too! >:D

What mistake? >:D

I think your screen may be dirty...don't you see the decimal point?

Jeeeeeeeeeze he has all day to read stuff and he GIGS me on a teeny weeny mistake.........Jeeeeeeze >:D

Thanks for the catch though....

I see it now. You're getting closer, but I still think it's 8mil. 0.8mm is still more than three times as thick. (Although I here there's a thicker 12 mil version. 0.8 mm is still more than twice as thick as 0.8mm ;D )

I couldn't let it pass. A chance to catch you in error. It's a once in a liftime event, and may never happen again!

And no, I don't have all day to read stuff. I should be working right now! >:D

The stuff is thick....

Xpel light film

Please notice installed thickness is 0.038" = 0.9652mm

See I was pretty close......

clear bras (y)

but really .... my dealer brought it up but it was like 250-300 bucks and that didnt include any replacement bras. sales woman said most people dont take it but she likes to offer it. now if she (very cute girl) would have modeled it first i probably would have gotten it >:D she said most people just buy an aftermarket hood shield like lund or something like that. the only difference is the clear bra covers part of the front quarter panel and the lund doesnt. if i start seeing scratches on the quarter panels i might get them covered but not the whole hood.

I agree with your specs and math, but I think you just got lucky!

However, those are the specs for the light protection film. I must be mistaken, but I thought we were talking about the paint protection film, which is 6 or 12 mils thick. Somewhat thinner...

...

Ok, I think we've beaten this to death, I'm losing interest... I will let you get in the last word, however.

-- SS

Actually for the paint protection >:D

One layer is either 6 or 12 mils....look at pic carefully...they do not show the thickness of the other layers.....Yeah the paint is not as thick but come on what a guess.....

I got the info from a post or two on my detailing forum some time ago....... >:D

OK, so I lied when I said I'll give you the last word.

The bottom layer shown is the paper backing, which is peeled off and thrown away. It doesn't count.

Next is the adhesive, which I'll guess is really thin compared to the other layers.

Then there is the film, either 6 or 12 mils.

Finally, there is a clear coat. This is the question. I know it's not a scale drawing, but it is shown as being thinner then the other layers. I'm willing to give it 2 mils. In which case we're up to the 8 mils for the regular film, as stated in the earlier posts. ;D (How's that for CYA logic? We'll just ignore the 12 mil film for now. If you can stick in a decimal point after the fact, I can throw some baseless strained logic around!)

In the end, squabbling over a few mils is pointless. This stuff is quite thick as far as plastic film goes. It actually sounds pretty interesting. It would have helped me out a lot a couple of months ago when all of the vertical front surfaces of the truck (windshield, mirrors, hood edge, and grille) picked up a fine mist of road painting overspray. Now I have little white dots all over. :7:

A little off topic, but any ideas how to get it off? Lacquer thinner and goof-off (on the windhsield) didn't touch it. I won't try either of those on the paint! I hear a clay bar is good for paint oversrpay, think it would work on this? I've looked for a claybar locally, but can't find it yet.

ygmn: are you the experienced detailer? If not, do you remember who is?

-- SS

Try the clay bar...if that does not work look for a product call PREPSOL which is a body shop paint degreaser/solvent...it will help to soften the overspray paint...then try claying again.....

Also look for CLAY MAGIC body clay in the RED bar...this is their most aggresive and for severe overspray......

PS Good GUESSes From one ENgineer to another.... >:D

I made an appointment on Friday to have the 3M installed (8mil, 2layers). I saw it installed on all the Avs at a dealer in Castle Rock, Co. (Side note... I will never deal with that particular dealer again. Rarely have I been treated worse). Anywho... I'll post how the clear Bra turns out. That is, if my Av ever gets out of the shop for the power steering pump.

Thanks Guys,

Axeonefour

ps Dealer was charging $395 for hood only. I am getting hood, fenders, mirrors and painted areas on grill for less than $200

axeonefour

let me guess you went to medved in castle rock. i almost bought my av there the salesman was as real @#$hole. when i left that place i felt like i had been slimed  i finally got mine from ed bozrath by park meadows mall. killer dealer and a great service department. i wouldnt go anywhere else. drop me a line if you want. i live in castle rock.

OK, now I AM confused. ?Twice as thick just because you hit the space bar between the number and the symbol? ????

Anyone heard of a cling (not adhesive) type film that one could install on the leading edge for temporary use (for example a long road trip) and then easily remove?

Yep, that extra space makes a world of difference! (How thick is a space character, anyway?)

Of course, I meant to say 8mil is still twice as thick as 0.8mm, but my fingers didn't seem to want to do what the brain was thinking. :2:

I think I re-worded it a couple of times and re-arranged the order of the numbers, but I obviously did a poor job proof-reading! :6:

Nice idea, but I've found most of the damage happens on the routine drives, not the long distance ones. (Read a few posts earlier how I got spray-painted on the way to work. :8: )

Just my opinion (which obviously isn't worth much, considering the way I type and proof-read) but I would think just using it on "special occasions" wouldn't give me enough protection. ymmv.

Oh, and no, I haven't heard of a temporary film, but I'd be surprised if there isn't one out there. I'm guessing you're looking for a clear version of the white film that the automakers use when shipping new cars. (I would guess they use white since they want to make sure the dealers don't miss taking one off during dealer prep.)

At least I think it is....

Hey Nople,

You are dead on the nose. It was Medved. Terrible, terrible experience with those clowns. Ended up buying from Team Chevy in Colorado Springs.

My Av is currently in the shop for a power steering gear and Tean Chevy is having a guy come there to install it so that I can leave cross country on Saturday.

Thanks for the input, I thought it may have just been me and not Medved.

Axeonefour

Ahhhh Medved - when I was looking to buy an AV - I put a request online to get quotes back from dealers.

One dealer called me back in 12 hrs - I heard from Medved 2 months after I had bought my AV - glad I didn't have to go in and deal with them.

Hey Axe . . . another Team Chevy purchaser . . .

Bought my Z-71 there in Dec 2001 . . . even though I live up north in Greeley. Found the perfect Av there after an internet (GMBuypower) search, and wanted the 0% financing. Even though we were from out of town, and obviously interested in the Av, they gave us excellent service and we were able to strike a pretty good deal. I'd go back. . . .

Now as for Ghent Chevy here in Greeley . . . :D:
