Cracked Rear Window Trim?

Hi do you know if this will apply to my 2004 Avalanche? I have a huge crack in the trim in the rear glass. I have 3 little kids sitting in the rear and don't want it to break causing them injury. I appreciate any help you can give me. If the TSB does not apply to my year, do you how much a new glass will cost me and where to get one? I know dealer will be a ripoff.

I changed mine under warranty a few years ago (my 0:cool: and the invoice showed $600 bucks. They covered me under warranty, but that's what the paper work said. Now my 2011 is cracked - ha!
Good luck on your quest.

A 2004 is significantly out of warranty so unfortunately I would doubt a dealer will address.

Well, looks like I'm a crackhead now too. Was driving yesterday and my kids said "daddy--you have cracks all over the back!!!" Sure enough, 2 splits - bottom middle and upper corner drivers side (which is about 1/2") Can't figure how it could even split that wide?

Mines a 2012 in South Florida--hardly extreme temps. That was the straw to get me to bring the truck in as now have a list of small quality issues...

Anyways, that's why I keep coming back to this forum -- now I have plenty of ammo for all my issues if the service guy wants to play games!

Thanks guys for the info. Called dealer and he said my vehicle was not in the TSB so I'm out of luck. He transferred me to parts and then the line got disconnected. I guess I will be looking at junk yards or after market. Someone said it was $600 for the glass, his was under warranty though.

I think I should have ordered a spare before posting this because everyone is going to go ham on this  they are only going for around 100-150 on ebay with free shipping

I really hadn't thought about mine for a while so thanks for the link. I just bought one couldn't pass it up at $140.00 when my local dealer wants $750.00

Hi, ya $600 on my 2008 - I reported that previously. I justed changed my window on my 2011 today, although the dealer does not report the value anymore - they did do it under warranty.

Looked at my back window the other day, sure enough big 1/4" crack right
in the center bottom. Took my AV to the dealership and they ordered me a new one.
Said they were kinda scarce, but one was coming from Canada. They whined that it
was $750. It's in and I'll pick it up tomorrow.

Was thinking about getting one off of Ebay for $139 and using that one in winter,
maybe it WON'T crack and if it does, just repair it and use it in winter, put the GM
one back in once it's warmer again. I'm assuming the extreme cold we had this winter
is partly to blame, and I don't want this GM window/frame cracking again,
don't know how many times they would replace it, since others here say the
replacement ones eventually crack too.

I'll have to ask them tomorrow how the new window is warrantied, and what if it cracks again.

Anyone here get the $139 Ebay window? Just wondering how they compare to a
factory GM one.

Dan

I did get one from eBay for $140 and the glass has all of the OEM GM stamps. Haven't put it in yet because my wife ripped the tint trying to put it on.supposed to be nice weather this week so I can get the truck cleaned up.

  Good plan for the winter.

Did anyone notice that the ebay rear Av window prices suddenly jumped?

The cheapest Monday am was $132.xx then went back to $139.xx. Then
last night they went to $169.xx and tonight one place is still $169.xx but the other
is up to $199.xx That"s a 50% increase! I got one coming for $146.89 w/free
shipping by using "Make an Offer".

the listings say how many bought them in the last day or so... maybe they've been watching the purchases go up and are going to try to make their buck off it  (n)

My 2005 av rear  glass frame is still good, uncracked, but I was at the pic a part yard in Indy, saw a wreaked 2002 av with the dark  factory glass, & it had a 1/4 " crack on the bottom in the center by the arrow, I bought it for $23.00, stopped at autozone & bought their " flexible bumper repair kit" runs around $10.
When I got  home washed & cleaned the frame, taped off the glass with masking  tape, I also used 1/8" fine line tape on the frame next to the crack on both sides ( so adhesive only goes into the crack ) & used a small piece of 280 grit sand paper to sand the inner edge of the crack then filled the crack with the flexible bumper glue/urethane , let it dry, then put a 2nd skim coat where it was low, turned out great, the cured color of the bumper glue is almost exact same as the frame, it is unnoticeable unless u know where to look. , I realize no one should have to even be dealing with this, but this is a cheap permeant repair, just a thought for u guys who don't want to buy a glass.
( I used the bumper repair adhesive because it is alittle flexible, & should be able to expand & contract with the rear of the frame of the glass ,

Here's new back window glass about as cheap as I've seen it. $140.00 and free shipping..

Had some extra time this weekend, so I repaired the corner of mine again, but this time with Black RTV (the first 2 attempts were jb weld and it cracked).    The color looks good.  I am starting the clock to see how long it holds up.  The biggest problem is that the sides of the frame want to pull AWAY from the glass.

^ same with mine, the frame will not sit tight to the glass edge anymore. It makes my window shifted over about 1/4" from the centering arrow on the cross bar. Not sure what I'm going to do with mine. Fix or replace.......  :9:

My old window was at that point when I Swapped it, I was going to try putting glue between the seal and the window and wrap a ratchet strap around it tip it dried. I got a steal on a new one and it had to be swapped so I never had to try it.

Add me to the list.  It just started last fall and has already morphed into this.  It's so big already I doubt the JB Weld fix will work but I'm going to try anyway.  I don't want to throw money at it until I decide what I'm going to do with it and it's leaking through since the gap is so large.

I used clear RTV sealant on my window frame crack and it's been a couple of years and it has worked well, it's flexible and so far hasn't leaked.

I don't think my google pictures are working anymore.  I just created a Photobucket album in case the picture in my above post isn't showing up.  Do you think a "crack" this big can be fixed by JB Weld or RTV?  It seems a bit excessive to me.

^ that's exactly what mine looks like. The black frame isn't even pushed tight to the glass edge anymore. I was going to use a steel banding machine and wrap it around the entire frame and tighten it before I filled the gap. Quickly realized there are too many bumps and lips on the edge of the black plastic and I didn't do anything....

I've been on the list for quite a while and it's getting worst, Be careful if you try to use a strap on it they has been known to shatter into a thousand pieces.

I'll probably just replace it

I need to do something, either replace it or at least seal it so it doesn't leak anymore.  Just need to figure out what I'm doing with it in general before I make this call.  I just can't believe how fast it went from perfectly fine to this bad.
