Cracked Rear Window Trim?

Hello,
I hope i have the right thread for this.  I did a search on rear window corrosion.  I have not noticed the splid described here but I will search my truck tonight.  The reason I came in today was that I did notice something strange on my rear glass.

???

The bottom seal where the seal touches the glass has a line of white corrosion on it.  It is like the corrosion on a battery terminal.  Chalky and growing up and out.  I scratched some off with my fingernail.  It runs the full length of the rear window.  This just a few weeks out of warranty.  Has anyone else seen this?  I had thought that I could clean and treat with something but now I am concerned that this is a warning sign of bigger problems.

inside or outside?

if inside could be from defroster foil....???

PS...not much metal on rear window to corrode.....except defroster lines...

got pic?

Thanks for the reply.

i looked last night and I don't see the gap.  I probably have the newer frame.

The corrosion is Inside the cab and I think it probably is from the defroster foil that sits under the bottom edge of the frame.  I scratched a lot of it loose, but I will get you a pic tonight.

Thanks,
Rick

use a stiff toothbrush to scrub it away....and maybe also dip it in vinegar to help...

then when clean...spray with water...and wipe up..then clean window as usual...

I am interested to see this pic

Ok, trying to post the pic.

You can see a couple of pieces where I was scratching it off the first day.? It was very much like battery corrosion the first day.? Tiny cauliflower like growths.? ?Last night when taking this pic it was more like waxy or oily.? I thought "is all the moisture from the armor all collecting back here?? Is it skin/oil from me (nasty)?"? ?

Weird.? I thought I would clean it as you suggest and treat with black silicone or something, but there isn't any metal I could see under the frame.? I don't think it is corrosion anymore, maybe a weird mold or something.

Thanks for listening.....

rick

Rick, you might try taking a shower.  JK ;D

Do you drive around with the windows down?  Could be from the outside and just accumulated on that flat ledge.  I can't say I've ever seen anything like that.  Is it hardened or come off easily?

;D

Yeah I probably should see a dermatologist, or try washing my a$$ once in a while...... ;D

The first layer was in tiny cauliflower like growths that crumbled when touched.  They broke off or became powder, very brittle.  Then day two the under layer was waxy / oily.

I very rarely put the windows down.  Almost never.

You have a mobile meth lab, don't you?

Nope.

Thats one way to pay off the AV I guess, but not for me.  Maybe you are on to something.  I get caught behind Anhydrous (sp?) amonia (farm vehicles) on my morning commute.  Maybe the AV is cooking up some new kind of crank on its own?  :)

I'll probably just clean it up and hope it doesn't come back.
I looked around the cab and didn't see it any place else.  Some light rust starting in a couple of spots.  :(    But no more of this stuff.  No signs of moisture anywhere.

interesting is all I can say....

I have no idea what it could be.....other then maybe donut crumbs?

OK people...go examine your rear windows for this funk.  RickJ isn't crazy after all  ;)  I took a closer look at mine, and what do you know, I have some of this stuff.  Not nearly as funky as his, but there nonetheless  :cautious:

Looking at RichUF's picture above, could it be material/dust from the defroster grid?  My defroster grid turned a chalky color with a dusty residue.

I detailed the inside of my truck Thursday...and ...nothing on rear window....interesting...

Hi guys, my precious AV also has a cracked rear window frame.? I noticed it a couple of months ago and have been fighting with my dealer ever since.? I rarely ever take my window out and am quite sure I didn't damage it.? I noticed a wind sound like a window was down just a bit but they weren't so I started looking around and found a 1/2" gap in the lower corner on the passenger side.? I called my service rep immediately and kept leaving him messages but nothing has been resolved.? I called him again today and he said he checked into it but they didn't know of any previous problems and wouldn't do anything about it.? This has been going on for two months.? Today it poured down rain and now I have a wet back wall.?
Does anyone have any suggestions?? I think part of the problem is my service guy knows I just moved and am not in his area anymore, even though we started the whole process long before I moved.? Do you think I should go to a local dealer (who doesn't have the best reputation but is the only Chevy dealer in 100 miles) or just go straight to GM??  ???
From all I have read on this posting you guys all got this problem taken care of pretty quickly and easily, everything I have needed done has been a total fight.? ?:E:?
Thanks a bunch for any help you guys can come up with.? I appreciate all your insight.?

There is a thread about some who have fixed theirs (out of warranty) using Epoxy and/or silicone like stuff....

my 3 year factory warranty ran out five days ago evem though i only have 30,000 miles on my av.  i just found several cracks in the rear window trim and took it to my local dealer.  expecting to get the run around, the service writer said no problem and replaced it immediately.  he knew about the problems with the cracking rear windows and took care of it without any problems, while there they replaced my tail gate cables for the national recall.

The powdery stuff on the window "looks" like salt leech. Our ambulances get something similar during winter salt season. The salt crystalizes and just grows out of the window frames. Not sure if that is the problem with yours  though.

Good luck solving it.

According to both dealerships I took my truck too neither one has ever seen this problem nor could find a service bulletin. The service bulletin list by member guest on this site is incorrect. I can't get the GM customer service rep or both dealerships to admit there is a problem with window frame. Both dealerships looked at the window and told the GM REP there is no defect that is just "cosmetic". I need a AV member with the same problem to  call the GM customer service Cortney Davis at 866-932-4368 extension no. 35538 and make them aware of this factory defect. :E:

I see you have a 2002.? Do you know the build date?? If built prior to 10/31/2001 than this GM Document could apply:

(It is not a TSB)

Service VME - Midgate Glass Encapsulation Cracking Condition #PI00490 - (09/23/2002)
Service VME -- Midgate Glass Encapsulation Cracking Condition.

When servicing the vehicle with the VIN you entered, the following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the described symptoms.

SERVICE VME
Based on field input, customer comments of midgate glass leaks and or frame fractures are still being reported. Any truck build prior to 10/30/2001 may be suspect of a midgate glass encapsulation cracking condition. Service Parts Operations currently has removable midgate glass with new encapsulation material that will prevent cracks from occurring.

Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed. If these steps do not resolve the condition, please contact GM TAC for further diagnostic assistance. This diagnostic approach was developed for the vehicle with the VIN you entered and should not be automatically be used for other vehicles with similar symptoms.

My service advisor has a 2002 Avalanche that had a cracked rear window frame and, even as a service advisor, she was not aware of this document

Here is another thread on the same subject:

REAR WINDOW SEAL CRACK!!!!

My rear window has a chunk missing from one of the corners of the plastic frame of the rear window.  This is causing a leak.  I wanted to know;

a)does anyone have a spare they don't mind parting with
or
b)know of a good way to repair the frame
or
c)know where to buy the part for less than $730.00 (dealer quote)
or
d)know anywhere that has wrecked Avys to search for parts.

I thought I'd ask for help here before I go plunking down the $800 (after tax abouts I figure) for a replacement part.

Mark

SnowLeopard:

What year is your Avalanche, and are you still under warranty (I assume not).

What do you mean by chunk?  Is it a crack or split, or is there a piece missing due to damage?

Sorry,
It's an 02.  Not under warranty

When I bought the truck there is a chunk of the trim missing.  I don't know how it happened.  The missing portion is about an inch, inch and 1/2 missing from the bottom passenger side corner.  The missing area wraps from the bottom up the side of the window.

An '02 - Take a look at my reply about three posts above this one.  It sounds like you the problem described.  How far are you out of warranty as I have read in some of the threads were dealers have still honored the GM document.  If you get no results, trying calling GM and mention the GM document and see if they will help you.

Otherwise.  The links I posted in the thread above will give you an idea of how some members have repaired their windows.

Let us know how it works out.
