Cruising for BIG BEND weekend

Depending when ACA members want to leave San Antonio, we can meet at Smith Chevrolet off of IH10W and cruise out to Big Bend together.

We are working on getting a group started. It will probably be mid-December when we get a better idea of how many will make the leap and go with us.

I know it is still a long ways away, but I have a few ideas about what to do at Big Bend.

1st Cruise from motel to Santa Elena Canyon. Since some people will not be getting in until Saturday, I assume we would do this on Sunday morning.

2nd After Santa Elena Canyon, picnic for lunch at the Castolon picnic area.

3rd Dinner Sunday night at Longhorn. The restaurant can seat almost 50, and there is an adjoining meeting room that can seat about 60 more. The owner, Bettye, said she can fix us a buffet. I did not ask her about menu or price. Assume it will depend on the number. I thought we might ask for a discount on the meal instead of on the rooms. Just a thought! Also, we could do this Saturday instead of Sunday.

Tribal,

One thing you might want to consider is going 10 one way and 90 the other. If you do that, I would suggest going on 10 and coming back on 90. The reason is that (I think) you are planning on driving part way on Friday. There are motels along 10. (Particularly Junction, Sonora, and Ft. Stockton) On 90 there will be some in Uvalde and Del Rio of course, but after that I'm not sure. It's been several years since I went that way.

ImpactAV,

ACA and CTA members plan to drive straight through to Big Bend on Friday, 10-12 hours for driving is nothing compared to what TribalAV and I have driven, we drove 20 straight hours, with only pit stops, to Savannah this past October! (y)

Lisa, what time and day will you guys leave from Smith Chevy - I might make the trip over and hook up with you guys.

Richard

Still six weeks away, but soon we got to start talking about what we are going to do down there. What does everyone think about group dinner Saturday night at the motel?

If people think it's a good idea, I'll call Betty and try to get some options for menu and price.

Any thoughts?

Sounds good to me. (y)
We always try to eat together somewhere while we cruisin',
Don't we gang?

Richard,

TribalAV, ChubbsAV and myself will be having lunch at Bud Jones Friday and then taking off for Big Bend, we have not decided on a time yet, but I will let you know once we have come up with a departing time. You are more than welcome to join us for lunch at Bud Jones! We can cruise together like we 3 musketeers did to STI back in October of '03. It will be great fun as long as the Texas state troopers leave me alone :2:

Lisa :B:

Here is the BB ACA meeting place:
Castroville, TX 7:00am Depart 7:30am Come earlier to get breakfast before departure. The exact meeting place will be given soon. Chubbs has to drive over there to find out the name and location of the restaurant he is thinking of meeting.

Richard and Texas Space- You are both welcome to stay here at my house with family and all Thursday night. We can then leave here by 5:30am Friday. That will give you guys a better nights sleep. I live only 10min from I10.

Finalized meeting place for ACA and CTA members courtesy of ChubbsAV:

Friday, Feb. 13, 2004

The meeting place is Sammy's Restaurant located in Catroville TX. It's right off the road Hwy 90 W. to the left. They open at 06:00 (AM) so that's not a problem, we will be departing Sammy's reatauant at 07:30 (AM) that morning so if you want to have breakfast there will be plenty of time for that. We talked to the manager and they said they will be ready for us. I tried to estimate the number of AV'ers that might attend the morning meet approx 20 members.

Sammy's reastauant
Castroville TX.
202 Hwy 90 E.
(830) 538-2204

I want to go SO bad and it would be compatible with my single dad schedule as mom gets my son for his spring break - but I'm so broke I can't even afford to pay attention and the price of gas per gallon is just to high for the drive from Canada to Mexico...

Hey Larry - at this time I plan on staying with you on Thursday night with the kids.

Hey Chief,

Sorry you can't make it. I've never had a jello shot, but if these people will share one with me, I'll make a toast to you!

JELLO SHOTS are awesome but if you have to many you will end well... :D: >:D

Hey folks,

I'm headed to Impact tomorrow. I'll still have interent access but it's yucky old dial up. Here's a few last minute reminders.

1. Weatherwise, expect anything. Probably only 30 at night, but maybe 20. Highs probably 60, but maybe 70 or more.

2. Remember to fill up before you get close to Terlingua. Ft. Stockton, if you are on I-10. Alpine, if you are on 90. Pecos if you are on I-20. Also, the stations in the towns are often quite a bit cheaper than the ones on the interstates.

3. If coming on 90, don't turn south on 385 at Marathon. Go on to Alpine, and turn south on 118.

4. If coming on I-10, don't turn south on 385 at Ft. Stockton. Keep going a few miles, and take highway 67 south to Alpine.

5. Anyone coming on I-20 (like me) I suggest going to Pecos, and then south on 17. (First exit past the Flying J truck stop.) At I-10 you go west, then take the first exit, south on 17 again, to Ft. Davis. Then 118 through Alpine to Terlingua.

Just my suggestions.

Also, I just couldn't resist this. Hope you don't mind. The newspaper in Alpine is "The Avalanche". I told them you were coming! Tribal and Missav, I gave them your email addresses just in case they want to communicate and try to get you to stop for a photo opportunity.

See ya'll next week!
