Lunch!
UPDATE: Meet at 11:30 am at the Burger King located at I-35/80 and University Avenue (Exit 124 if my map is still right) on the west side of Des Moines. The Burger King is located on the west side of the Interstate and is part of a gas/convenience shop in case any long distance travelers need to refuel. We'll meet up, have lunch, then it's on to.....


Karting!
Around 12:30 pm or so we'll head over to the Sprockets Corporate Karting Center for some indoor karting, hanging out, parking lot mods, whatever. ?Sprockets opens up at 12:00 noon. ?Karting prices: ?$19/8 min, $22/10 min, $29/20 min (these are not your average amusement park karts! Drivers must be at least 12 years old). ?Karting is available first-come, first served.

Cruise!
Around 2 pm, we'll head out for our cruise destination of Winterset, IA. ?In this area are numerous covered bridges made famous in the book and movie, "The Bridges of Madison County". ?We'll visit several of the bridges, and if interest and time permits, visit the Winterset boyhood home of a fellow named Marion Morrison (aka John Wayne). ?We may also include a short side trip to Pammel State Park, the site of the only vehicular tunnel in the State of Iowa. ?After this we will head back to Des Moines for dinner. ?Total driving distance during the cruise estimated at 75 miles.

Dinner!
We will meet back at the Iowa Machine Shed restaurant located at 11151 Hickman Road, right near the Kart track, for dinner. ?The Machine Shed serves meals family-style, with entrees priced $9-20. ?Discuss the day's activities, possible future meets, the National meet, etc. before breaking up and heading out. ?Estimated time back at the Machine Shed to be in the 5-6 pm range, depending on how the cruise goes. ?Break-up for the evening at ??

Don't forget to bring your FRS radios if you have them.

Right smack dab in the middle of Iowa, Sweetie. ?Prob'ly an 8 hour drive from your house. ?I will talk to you and Mdz66 tomorrow about it. ?If you 2 are interested, maybe we can work something out. ?

Anyway, jnspur will be a party of 2! ?Is Ahhyeah going to be there? ?I am trying to see his AV! ;)

PS: Nice planning job! Excellent cruise for an 'unofficial' Chapter!
 
I will be there for sure. I will also scout out the bridges, make maps, and find some food areas for lunch. Just so everyone knows, there is an official chapter for Des Moines, Iowa. I will keep the Chapter info updated as we make decisions. I am very busy with the wedding and moving soon. I'll let you know what I find on my scouting. :)
 
Thanks, Doug, for taking on the scouting trip for us. That will be a real help. Let me know if there is anything I can help with on this. I know it can be a very busy time for you with the wedding and all coming up.

I didn't know there was an organized chapter in Des Moines - at least it's not listed on the chapter page. Do you guys have a website or other means of keeping in touch?
 
Well, I registered the chapter with CAFCNA.com. I am waiting for the password so I can update some of our info, but it's there!!! :cool:
 
We might be able to make it i will have to check. The carting looks fun!.It would just be me and my dad if we came.
 
Hey Doug, I see what you mean about the Des Moines chapter. It's not on the summary page of chapters, but if you go to the "show all chapters" link and page through, the Des Moines info is there ???. Oh well, perhaps this meet can qualify as one of Des Moines chapter's activities??

Looks like we're off to a good start already - 4 Av's and 8 people! :)

I can commit yet, but I am going to try to make it down there. I think Des Moines is about 3-3.5 hours from the Twin Cities. If I do go, I might bring my son but again, nothing for sure yet.

pennfold, I guess it depends on whether there are any others coming from Omaha. If its just you & me, we can meet somewhere along I-80 in town - ie, 84th St or 72nd St exit or something like that. If ChevyThunder or one of the others decides to go, we may push the meet point a little further east.

Since the Kart track really doesn't have much in the way of food, I figure on getting to Des Moines a little before noon, at whatever place Ahhyeah finds for us. Based on that, and estimating a 2-1/2 hr drive, I would figure we should meet around 9am, wherever we decide.

Put me down as a strong maybe. May have to skip the carting but get there in time for socal and the bridge cruse. Anyone from MN want to drive down together.

Gotcha down. (y) No problem on just coming for the cruise, you can meet us at the Kart track. Here's how to get directly there, best as I can describe: Take I-35 south to Des Moines. At the junction with I-80, continue I-35 south / I-80 west by taking essentially a right turn. The highway heads west at this point. When the highway turns south, look for exit 125 - Hickman Road/US-6. Exit and go east (turn left) about 1/4 mile to NW 108th St. Turn right and Sprockets should be right there. Ahhyeah may be able to provide better directions than this. Right near where you turn in to Sprockets you should see the Iowa Machine Shed restaurant on the left, where we will end up for dinner that evening. :D

Hope you can make it, Sean. Would love to have a small caravan of Avs from Omaha. Or bring the inlaws along! :-* Just part of "showing them around". ;) Hey, can you join us this next Saturday evening for pizza at Sortino's?

Ahhyeah, any updates on the meeting point or the cruise route?

Man if the weather is anything like it's been the last two days here we'll have a great time!
