:8:So I've been reading posts about the DIC. And this got me to wondering, what the heck people were talking about. So I start looking around at stuff and realize why I haven't heard of this before. I DONT HAVE IT. I bought a fully loaded '02 Z71, so my first reaction was what do you mean I dont have it. As I come to find thru some reading the 02 Av's dont get that as an option. So I called up the dealership and they are checking to see about it for my truck, but he says it would probably be cost prohibitive. So I just gotta know. What exactly does this DIC entail and why would it be cost prohibitive? :8:

I am very sorry to hear that you don't have a DIC. :(

I just don't know what I would do without mine.

I'd suggest to go to your local dealer and try one out.

DIC = Driver Information Center. It is a display in the cluster that is best controlled by the stearing wheel controls (also not avaialble on the 2002).

The DIC is where I set my security options--lights/horn feedback, perimeter lighting settings--it also shows fuel economy, trip meter, hour meter, and various other things.

Most of the nifty features of my 2003 are controlled by the DIC.

I know that the DIC is crippled on 2003's without the steering wheel controls. JP Customs is working on this, so I'm hoping when it is available it will also enable the DIC.

For most cars, these types of on-board diagnostics, etc. are embedded in the electronics - it's too costly to physically delete the diagnostics during the manufacturing process. Oftentimes, buying the option merely: A) turns it on or B) (more typically) provides you with the controls to use the diagnostics/computer.

Might be an aftermarket hack (i.e.: JP Customs, above) that would enable you to access the DIC if it was offered. I've noticed on my '03 that I can access the DIC via either: A) steering wheel mounted controls or B) a rod coming out of the dash (looks like an odometer reset rod, but you can spin it to access DIC controls).

Good luck.

Spin it? I got all excited and ran out to mine to try - spinning the stem doesn't do anything. All I can do is press it to toggle thru odo/trip/hour meters. With the steering wheel controls there are oodles of settings you can adjust - seat memory, 'easy exit' seat movement, etc. etc. I'm hoping those features 'wake up' with the steering wheel controls JP is working on.

I love my DI* ?:-X

I'm sorry!! I just had to. ?I really liked Joelis post. ?Anyway, this is a great feature and it does control all of the basic control, entry and exit options and gives all kinds of information.

The only thing I wish I could do is automatically fold the power sideview mirrors when I park. ?This is the neatest feature of the convenience package. ?I mainly us it in the Garage at work.

I really wish that the DIC and the (pwr folding mirrors  ) were included in the 02's, but I can live with out them. If JP does come up with something to enable this on the 02's then I definitely will look into it.

To All... thanks for the good information. It sounds like a great option but not enough of one to trade in my '02 for. If someone comes up with an aftermarket upgrade for it then its on like donkey kong.

I've made it for years with out one of my own,
but if I'd known I could have got one with my AV...
It would definately be an all purpose vehicle!

Am I going to get spanked for this?

That would be WAY cool if a control mod would provide some of those '03 features to our '02 brothers and sisters, but I have a feeling that they're embedded in the electrical system upgrades that happened in '03 as well. Good Luck!

PS. If you get a DIC somehow, I expect you to chip in to help me get an under hood light! (just kiddin') >:D
