I am upgrading (Finally!!) my wheels and tires for my '02 Avalanche 1500. The wheels I want to use are Mickey Thompson Classic II in a 17x9, hub centered, 4 1/2" backspace. I have narrowed my tire selection down to either the Dick Cepek Radial Fun Country 2 or Procomp Mud Terrain. The tire size I want to use is a 33x12.50-17.

Does anyone have any experience with either of these tires? They will see more on-road then off-road but I still want the off-road capability. Noise is not much of a factor for me.

Any thoughts or comments will be welcomed.

Thanks,

I like the look of both of the tires. I think you may run into some rubbing issues on a stock Avalanche. Especially with the wheels being wider.

I would pick the Fun Country IIs. Have you looked into Parnell Jones' Dirt Grip tires. I installed them not too long ago on mine and I love them.

I havent tried either of those, but I can attest to what LR said, the Panelli's are great, they are much heavier than most tires and are easily balanced. Wear is great..You cant go wrong with them...Not to take from the ones you mentioned, I just havent tried either of them..

Will there be enough clearance for either of those? I thought the biggest you could go was a 285/70 r17 without rubbing? If not please let me know. I want to go larger but don't want to change rims.

Up front I have installed the Ford keys and cranked them a bit and the rear has 2" longer coil springs. The Dick Cepek lists a 33" OD and Procomp a 32.5" OD for the 33x12.50-17 sizes. I should be OK on OD as the 285's are about 32.8" OD (BFG's). As far as the width, I hope my cheap lift and the 4 1/2" backspacing will make it work. The should only be about 3/4" wider then the 285's.

I will look at the Parnelli's - I never knew they were out there.

Thanks,

I have had the Por Compy M/T before and I was happy with them until I got the Interco Trxus STM tires and they are much better. I would go with the Dick Cepek over Pro Comp.

I have 33 12.5-17 Procomp AT's on 17x9 Extreem Alloy wheels with 4.5 back space. I've been very happy with them :) no noise, ride good, and wearing good. I can tell you that 4.5" is the perfect back spacing.
