Please look in this section....audio and video....

Many many threads on stereo upgrades....

You will get some engine noise if you hook up an amp to your stock
radio especially if it is the Bose system. Just take out The radio. Glenn

You should seriously consider getting a new deck first. The stock radio is just about as crappy as the stock windshield wipers. Man, your ears will want to shrivel up and die if you keep that radio with that new amp. Trust that.

Oh come on guys, the stock head unit isn't that bad! After all, he did say that...."I was thinkg about adding a new amp to my stock stereo"......and not ....."I want to rip out my entire system and start over!"

Whitethunder:
Welcome to the board! Your stock head unit will be fine for a simple upgrade. Any shop should be able to do the work for you, it is an extremely simple install. Head to a CC or Best Buy, or your locally owned shop if you have a good quality one that you trust, and tell them that you would like to add an amp to your factory head unit.

You will most likely want to upgrade your speakers, especially your front set. This will make a dramatic difference in sound qualtiy and will certainly be worth the upgrade money. A shop will most likely want to sell you a component set for the front doors, which is absolutely of no positive benefit compared to a coaxial using the same woofer and tweeter. The 6.5" coax will save you some money was well.

As far as an amp is concerned, you'll have to decide what you are planning to upgrade.
1. You can buy a two channel amp and use it to power upgraded front speakers.
2. There is the 4 channel option next. You can upgrade the power to the front and rear speakers with a 4 channel model, or use the 3rd and 4th channel bridged later for a subwoofer while the front two channels run the fronts, letting the rears stay stock.
3. Five channel amp: Upgrade all four door's power and have a channel for a sub now or later.

Let us know what you decide on, and have fun!

Yes the gm Stereo is staying! I like the way it looks and it seems to work fine.

Absolutely the front speakers will be replaced I will most likely go with Pioneer TS-A1670R - 6 1/2" the amp will primarily used for front speakers and small sub box's I will build for under back seats just to give a little kick.

But they keep telling me that they need the info from the GM Stereo before thaey can provide me with an amp.

Which is why I'm asking?

The GM radio will have the best AM But remember if you have a bad
sound from the stock radio all you are going to do is Amp that bad
signal. A new Radio will have a better Crossover,EQ, and sound separation. Glenn

I think he's ruled out a new head unit......

You haven't said who "they" is....but I think I'd look for a new shop if I were you. Adding an amp to a simple factory GM system should one of the most simple amp installs that a shop could possibly be asked to perform. Not only that, but most shops now have some sort of software sitting around that will provide them a printout of wiring colors and diagrams for installs, not that they should need it for this.

If you don't swap shops........find out what they need to know specifically.
