There are a parade of 7 or so screws around the rim of the black cargo storage insert in the front console (for those that have them) that would seem to suggest the cargo box could be removed, leaving the console hull in place. My attempts to remove it though have failed so far. Removing the 7 perimeter screws did not loosen it. Peeking under the anti-slip mat at the bottom of the cargo box revealed 4 larger bolts. I removed these, and the cargo box still would not come loose, but now the whole console is loose, as if I unbolted the whole thing from the brackets/mounts/whatever.

Anyone know how to just remove the cargo box and lid, leaving the rest of the console (with the drink holders, rear air supply, etc.) in place?

You are almost there, Brendan.

Flip down the rear cup holders, and you will find two more screws down near the bottom. They are horizontal, with the head to the back and the point to the front. To get to them, you need to remove the rear cupholder. The service manual says to use a flat bladed tool to pry one side out. (I've never tried it, so I don;t know if it's really that simple.) Once you pop out that cup holder and two last screws, the liner should just lift out.

This is great if you are replacing it, however, if you want to leave it out for some reason, you have already found the flaw in the plan. That inner liner is what's holding the console in place!

Hope this helps.

OK everyone, on the count of 3... one... two... three... DOH!

Ah well, maybe just me. I saw where Brendan was headed and thought "great idea... custom console insert" (my friend has a vacuum molder).

I would really like the '03 console but it doesn't look like it is going to work.

I apologize if it's already been posted but do you have a pic of the '03 console? How far off is it? Will it squeeze in with some minor mods? ;D

No problem.

The problem I saw was that it now goes high to where our current 3 12-outlets and ashtray are. It is also wider and that may be an issue with the dash but not the spacing between the bucket seats.

Here's the link to the hi-res I posted yesterday:

A little off the topic, but we had to drive a couple EXTs over to the airport last week for some GM bigwigs to drive when they arrived... Anyhow they only had 1 12-volt outlet ??? It was in a little compartment on the console, not like ours are on the lower dash. I thought this was unusual considering we have 3. I guess Cadillac's "upper scale" market isn't supposed to use laptops, cell phones, lighters, and such at the same time.
