Driver Died In Possible Avalanche

Actually, I think its a SportTrac...no sail panels and its got that curved line in the body between the doors and the rear wheels....phew...was worried for a minute...our Avalanches would protect us better than that - based on some of the other posts here, the thing is like tank in an accident (here's hoping I never find out personally though).

yep .. your right ... was looking at the cab more than the back .... once you said that I looked again ...

Very sorry to have someone die ....

sad thing....

we never know, do we.

That's why it's important to live life to the fullest, by the golden rule and with the fewest regrets possible.

It was on our local news....it was a Ford....sadly the driver had no seatbelt on and was thrown from the vehicle.

Any loss of life is a tragedy. Please lets all buckle up and obey the traffic laws as to keep ourselves and loved ones safe.

About a month after I got my AV, a Sport trac went of the highway near my home. It left the road and rolled, stopping on it's roof. The driver was also ejected and died :(
Friends of mine thought it was my truck, as the were rubbernecking. They called my house and asked if I was home, This came from 3 different callers. My wife was a total wreak till she got a hold of me. An Hour later.

Definitely not the way I want to die

Sad to see people die.

Glad it wasn't an AV though. I want to keep believing how safe the AV is in any kind of accident.

No one wants to see anyone die, no matter what vehicle they drive. But why is it in this day and age we still have people driving around without seatbelts? That's almost always the cause of people being killed in accidents, when they are thrown from the vehicle.

We have anti-lock brakes, frontal air bags, side airbags, airbag curtains, energy absorbing steering columns, etc, but they don't mean squat if you are being thrashed around in the cab of your vehicle. Please, please, please buckle up!

While I agree that the driver of this SportTrac was probably ejected, and that failing to wear his/her seatbelt was the cause, I am going to go out on a limb here and say that he/she was not "thrown" out, but suffered an even more insidious fate.

If you look at the left front roof rail above the driver's window, it is pushed in, and in what looks like a peaked or almost rounded shape. This is not the shape a roof rail usually makes after contact with flat road surface or the ground - it is more the shape it makes after being forced down on something rounded.

We see this pattern when the occupant is partially ejected from the vehicle, hanging half in and half out of the window. The vehicle rolls over on the occupant, trapping them between the road surface and the vehicle structure. It's a particularly hideous fate. The shame of it is, this vehicle didn't really roll that hard, or at that high of a speed.

Rollovers suck, there's no two ways about it. Even restrained occupants can get serious or fatal injuries from contact with the ground through the window.

Remember that your vehicle's retraint system is optimized for frontal collisions - there's a whole lot more sheetmetal between you and a crash to the front of your truck than between you and the ground in a rollover.

Keep the shiny side up.

This is how a friend of mine was killed many years ago. It DOES happen! It scared all of us into wearing safety belts in the 70s. I'm glad it did!

I Agree !

This reminds me of an accident on TV lastnight. A local accident involving a 4Runner left the driver dead. He rolled it and wasn't wearing his seatbelt and actually flew out the _rear_ window. Gives you an idea of how turbulent the ride becomes when the wheels leave the ground. The lesson to be learned is to wear seatbelts. I remember it being uncomfortable for the first couple months when seatbelts were made mandatory here a few years ago, but now I find it more uncomfortable to get into a vehicle and _not_ put on a seatbelt. Of course, the seatbelts in the Avalanche are really comfortable since they are part of the seat.
