I have the Pioneer 6400CD Head Unit installed and I really enjoy it with the XM tuner. I just got my Pioneer AVIC90-DVD Navigation unit and I am reading the install manual. Looks pretty simple. I am going to put it under the back seat. Two things I am unsure of. First, where to get power for it. I have never installed anything that I had to tap into power for. How do I do it and what tools do I need? Second and even more difficult for me, it says I have to connect it to the speedo cable somewhere. I have no clue what, where, when or how about this one. Any adivce and or pics would be greatly appreciated. I wanted to get a pro to install it, but the only local shop wanted $2,000 for the unit installed and would not install it if I bought one from EBay like I did. I got it for $1,100, so I could not justify $900 for installation. Thanks everyone.

Hello AVking,
What you will need to do to pick up speed count for the Avic 90 is to tie into the BCM (Computer Module) under the hood. The specific BCM is on the drivers side on the firewall under the bracket (from firewall to fender). The specific wire is one of the top two on the left hand side of the BCM. It is a green wire with a white stripe. The Avic 90 DVD wire should be pink. For power I used the power that I hooked to the 6400 CD monitor.

Thank you. But I am not sure where to get the speed wire from. Is it inside the vehicle or under the hood? Was the cable that came with the AVIC long enough or did you have to make one? If yes, how did you make it? What do I need? I am a complete idiot when it comes to these thing, so thank you in advance for potronizing me.

Duh. I read it again and see you said under the hood. Sorry, but I told you I was an idiot. So I guess I will need to make a cable to get that far. Do you know what kind of wire I need to get? Thanks again.

I suspect if you match the original wire you should be ok. You should only need to add a few feet to the factory length.
Enjoy your Nav system they add a great amount of entertainment to the driving experience.

Couple more questions from the village idiot. Where is the parking brake and reverse cables I need to tap into and how do I get to them? Where did you mount your microphone? How did you feed the GPS to the dash and where did you place the GPS? Thanks again.

For the reverse cables I tied into my reverse lights. I was installing a back-up camera at the same time so I was making that connection any way. For the parking brake I just grounded the wire and put an inline switch. By doing this I am able to disable the video when-ever I am being inspected or police have pulled me over. Ok so I was to lazy to find the correct wire. I mounted my mike on the dash panel below the three power outlets. The GPS cable slips through a vent in the center of the dash. I just glued the little metal plate (adhesive backing) down on the dash next to this vent and the antenna mounts to the plate magnetically. What I really want to know is why you keep calling yourself, by the names my wife uses a pet names for me " Village Idiot, idiot, and complete idiot" LOL. Hey the unit was a bit complicated to install but you get the joy of putting it in yourself so when you want to change something or fix it you'll know what to do. Take the extra money for the install ($300 in my case) and buy a backup camera.

Thanks for the info. I use the Village Idot term because evrytime I try something like this I either hurt myself or break something or most of the time both. I can easily implement and manage a 500 + node LAN/WAN, but as soon as I pick up a tool, I turn into the stereo-typical Village Idiot.

Where is the best place to find the wire for the reverse lights?

So the parking brake cable is just looking for a ground? That means I just attach it to a grounded cable somewhere? What did you ground it to?

Thanks again. I am going to attempt the install tomorrow afternoon.
