And what was gained by removing them? Were they plugged or was it for better mileage or HP gain?

Also it is illegal to remove them in Montana, I believe it's a Federal law, you must not have checks or inspections to make sure required devices are in place or modified.

I looked up the exact same web site and info.. Basically illegal to remove anywhere in US on a registered vehicle driven on the road.
