Engine ticking on cold startup....

I have a 07 av with a 5.3 and it has 650 miles on it. It sat for about 24 hours and the temp outside was around 35-50 during that peroid, I started it and it had a ticking sound in the engine, that sound stayed noticable for about 10 minutes. The temp. outside at the time of this was 41. Is this normal or should I call the dealer to get her looked at?
The ticking sounded just like my 97 Dodge Ram did when it was due for an oil change, but it had 172,000 miles on it.

Seems weird that I was just asking (started a topic) about when to change to syn. oil. Now my av is ticking.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

THANKS

Did it make the noise when idling, or while under load, or both? I wouldn't be concerned about it too much with only 650 miles on it. If it was nearing end of warranty, I'd be more concerned. My truck has piston slap when it's cold and under load. Once it warms up, the slap goes away.

I think that GM reduced the piston skirt size and increased the piston to cylinder clearance in order ro reduce friction, and when it's cold, the clearance is enough to rattle. I have yet to see one of these LS style engines fail as a result of it.

I agree...don't know I ever recall hearing of the bottom giving away unless extreme amounts of boost were involved.....

another thing I noticed on my 60# injectors...those puppies are loud also. Almost sounds like valvetrain ticking...

Thanks for the info guys. It ticked idleing and as I backed out of the driveway, couldnt really tell if it continued under more of a load than that.

Didnt tick at all this morning.

OK one quick little piece of information that will ease your mind about the future of the engine. Call 1-800-GM CARES and tell them about this issue, they will say to go to your dealer and have then verify this ticking and then the dealer can call GM with your information and Gm will send you the warranty to cover you till 100,000 miles for any issues re guarding this
Hope this helps, I called and received mine with no issues at all and mine is a 2002 2500 with 8.1.

Dont 2007 have 100k Drivetrain warranty already?

Yes they have a 100k warr.  Also these eng do have some noise in them, some louder than others its a normal sound for a gen 3 engine.  When these engines first came out in 99, we (i work at a gm dealer in canada) were replacing these engines like mad, then a bulletin came out saying that the noise was normal. Welp as time passed all these truck with new engines began sounding lke they did before after a few k, now these very same trucks have 160,000 kms on em and they have the same noise that they did back then, so it seems like they were right....just my 2 cents,,lol

i have a 2007 Avalanche also with under 800 miles at the time,i heard the same noise on a cold start, the ticking noise i think it's the lifter well when i hit 1200 miles i changed to mobile 1 and never heard the lifter noise again

I know I'm high jacking this thread but it's 2021 I have just put a remand engine in my 2008 avalanche I got maybe 1000 miles on it but about a week ago I started hearing same ticking last for few about 10 to 15 minutes then goes away. Been cold recently in the morning but when I get to the job sight it warms up during the day. After my truck sits all day something until warms up. But I was wanting to know if you went to mobile 1 full synthetic or conventional or blend

sounds like piston slap if only hear it when cold

Exhaust manifold bolts, are they all intact? I had a tick while cold until I installed a clamp to hold down the manifold, as the bolt near the firewall had broken off.

If it's a lifter sticking or just noisy lifters which is typical of these new gen engines (unlike the best motor built--350) try putting a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil in the crankcase. It works miracles, I've used it all my adult life on all my motors and I've had it cure sticky lifters.
