Everything about Spectre Cold Air Intake

Well it is finally done, I have had the intake on for about 3 weeks now and like the way the truck sounded and responded and was waiting to get the funds for the exhaust install  (y).  Now it has been 5 days since the install of my exhaust and man what a difference.  My exhaust setup is a true dual with 2.25" pipes and 2 dynomax turbos with 3.25" ss tips!!  >:D I do not have many pictures because the camera was locked away but I snapped a fiew of the install with my phone .  Sound is perfect and no loss of performance at all with an increase in power and gas mialage as far as I can tell .

I just installed my CAI about two days ago and so far I am quite content.  The install took me longer than some of the other people on here (1.5 hours), but that was because the 9900 part number is tailor made for 2000-2006, and mine is a 2008.  It looks to be a tight fit and everything has to be aligned exactly in order for it to fit right. Below are some pics.  My initial thoughts on it are that it has better throttle response all around and it actually seems a little smoother idle (my truck can finally breathe :B:)  I definitely like the sound, especially when feathering the throttle and also when punching it  :drive: As far as improved gas mileage...that has yet to be seen, but the true test will be when my exhaust is also installed.  For now I am quite happy with it though (y)

And I think someone on this thread asked about a Carb number for this product in the state of California, and luckily mine came with one. So it's legal...

Pay special attention to power off the line when hitting it say after a red at an intersection. You may notice a little lag as compared to stock. Then again compare that to after the new exhaust is installed. BTW I blew the doors off a rice burner tonight, with a large tailfin and a coffee can muffler. Just because it's raining doesn't mean you can't show superiority.  :D

I really like the acceleration at freeway speeds for passing and climbing hills. Living in the foot hills by Yosimite I am always having to pass people. With my exhaust I also love the sound when I use second or third going down hills.
You made a fine choice my friend, welcome to the Spectra club. Enjoy!!!

It's been about 2 months now since everyting was done and I have never been happier!  Some people have mentioned the problem of accelerating from a red light and I have not noticed any of these symptoms such as lagging from stop or rough idleing.  It could be because before I had the intake installed I replaced the stock plugs with Bosch platnum 4's and replaced the factory wiring with OE replacement ones so there was a good spark I believe though that I could get even better performance once I replace the OE wires with 8.5 aftermarket performance ones.

I have the 8.5 MSD wires and they do make a difference. I found my lag to be the octane I was running. Once I upped it to 93 the problem is gone.

I rode in an GMC truck the other day with a CAI installed. I really like the sound, so I might have to try a real one instead of a home made setup.  :E:

Ok first of all let me say this sight is great!! many hours have been spent reading about the worlds greatest truck here! There is tons of info here thats what makes my decisions so hard to make.  I have been searching about cold air intakes for months now! I am totaly confused. To save me time I need to ask a bunch of Questions. (got to get as many mods done as I can before she really see's how much tax money we got back)  L.O.L. I have a 02 2500 with the 8.1 I think I want the Spectre Performance 9900 Air Intake Kit but when I look it up on the spectre site it says it does'nt fit my truck. whitch part # do I need to get? I have already done the muffman duals with the magnaflows, will this kit fit and is it worth the time and money to do it? would a drop in filter whith a hole drilled into the bottom of the airbox do just as well for me ?It seems alot of people say the stock tube gives me plenty enough volume.do you still get the lag at first with the 8.1 or is that just the smaller engines? Seems this thread is more 5.3 related, what do I do for the 8.1? also Is the spectre a dry filter or oiled I like the idea of dry so as not to mess up the MAf sensor . if it is oiled were can I get a dry filter to fit the spectre set upthat still gives increased air flow. Any help is greatly apriciated. :help:

The one I bought isn't Spectre, but it is the same exact setup, and $80 shipped to my door.

I went for a 150 mile drive the other day. I was heading up I5 north towards Tracy. I was cruisng at 73MPH when I decided to see how fast I could accelerate from that speed. I had my wife time me from 73-113,(when my speed limiter engages), and it took 4.3 seconds. I was completely amazed as to how fast she would move and the sound of the intake and exhaust was awesome. The CAI is not much different at off the line but when you are moving it gets up and goes. I also need to remember that the speedlimit out here is only 65-70. I lived in Idaho for the past 20 years where the speeds are 75+ and everyone does 85.

So if you are thinking of getting a Spectra or other I recommend it.

:jacked:  hey shane how did you get your speed limiter to engage at 113?  mine engages around 99-100

Pulled the trigger on a volant yesterday.Im hopeing it makes an improvement. After install I'm going for the tune from PCM for less Im told they do well and he lives about 12 miles from me.I dont know enough about tuners to feel safe about doing it myself.

Put in my Spectre CAI tonight. Was quite easy actually. I must say my warnings about possible loss of low torque were based on bad data. My mistake in the first attempt was I used  a stock filter with a CAI tube. Not the same at all when using the full meal deal. No loss at dead stops. A bit better if anything, but like everyone says sounds great on the HWY on ramp. It really was candy to my ears when I broke traction with both wheels (posi-traction Z66) and  just goosed it even more. Sounded like I had a 4 barrell 400 Cu In in there.  >:D

I am not happy with the steel barrier provided by the kit. So as I was measuring one of them so as to add insulation, then I noticed the large gap in front where hot air from the radiator would pass. So I placed the old filter box tray in that area and it was almost a perfect fit. I then drilled a couple key-holes to mount it on the existing hooks and secrured it with a sheet metal screw. Then used a rubber door sweep cut into different legnths to make the upper seal. Should help a bit in the summer.

That was left over from my front air scoop mod, so I left it there to bring in more fresh air.

Cutting these key holes was a bit tricky, but holds the plate like factory.

Also not show in this pic is I had to trim the corners off the rubber bar metal strips for hood clearance. The channel area of the hood will make contact otherwise.

Hay z66modder, could you PM those directions to me? I am interested in doing this myself because it looks clean and isolates the filter from the engine bay more than what the kit does.  I also plan on putting a swamp filter underneath the filter because it helps to divert more water out of the filter than nothing at all as it is now.

Nothing special. Just place the tray where you want it and trace the pins. Drill a hole (just larger than the shaft) centered on where you traced the pins. Then use a hole drill directly below (slightly larger than pins button face). Leave a 1/4" gap between the holes. Then use a metal saw or cutter to connect them. Once in place, mark and drill a small hole in the frame near the radiator side to secure with a sheetmetal screw.

The door seal is just secured with sheetmetal screws. I cut them with a cutoff wheel on my angle grinder. Not much to that.

So why/How does it change the sound of the truck??I'm running the flowmaster single chamber and it is very different from other trucks but would this set me over the top on the "different" meter??????

Not going to make a difference in the exhaust sound, you will now hear the air rushing in the intake with a cai. Under normal load it will not be detected, but when a heavy load is applied, massive amounts of air are forced through the intake tube creating a vortex sound that can be quite loud depending on how open are your pipes. My long tube headers with a (3" in, 2 1/2" split out) Magnaflo make quite the noise under the hood, but I love it.

I hunt and hunt but of coarse they don't make the spectre for 07+ I really don't like the K&N and prices are so steep!
