EVERYTHING GM Trailer Wiring Harness hook up wiring etc

Draw-tite instuctions says to follow vehicule manufacturer installation instructions if vehicule equiped with factory towing package. So it should be really easy! Just plug the correct wires of the draw-tite to the wiring harness.

Hey 2002 owner here.  Just getting my boat trailer ready to tow my sailboat to Annapolis MD.  I was working on my left rear tail light and noticed that I am not getting any juice to the yellow wire at the connector at the plug in.  The left rear light on the truck works fine, but I do not get any juice at the 7 way connector at the yellow wire.  Green wire for right rear works fine.  Any thoughts??
Thanks Mark T.

*****Edit - I just found my answer in another thread.  Yes, my 2003 wiring harness will work for my 05'*****

I just moved from an 03' to an 05'.? Is my plug and wire I have for my brake controller going to work for the new 05'?? Anything change as far as that goes from the 03' to the 05'.? I know a change occured from 02' to 03' and I just want to make sure before I blow something up.? I searched through this thread and didn't see anything.? Thanks,

Jim Kay

If anyone is interested, I found, modified and verified the following diagram for the 02 Avalanche. This includes the AV connector as well as the wiring for a trailer.

If anyone would like the source file to adjust for other years, please let me know (by PM or email) and I can forward the .XLS file to you.

Holy Cow - I wish they would fire the engineers that design wiring connectors for automobiles.  They are impossible to get apart.  So why put them there?

Now that I'm done complaining.........  I'm not getting power to my trailer hitch RR turn signal.  Everything else is working.  I would like to go start at where the hitch connects to the taillights but I can't get the connector apart.  Anyone know what to pinch, pull, bend or whatever to get the two connections apart that are under the LR quarter panel behind the wheel?

Thanks,
John

Did you check the fuses in the underhood power center? The left and right trailer feed signals each have their own fuses.

Is the wiring harness provided when an Avalanche is purchased, or is it an after market purchase?

Thanks,

Ray

Welcome to the club.  :welcome:

I see by your sig that you have a 2007. Brake controllers are no longer plug n play like the earlier models. You have to use the harness that came with the controller and wire it to the harness that is taped up under your dash.

Thank you.  I am very happy with the 2007.  I was leaning toward the Honda Ridline, however the Chevy dealer offered to install a reverse assist (when backing) camera and that made my day.  The camera works great.  The monitor is mounted in front of the inspection sticker on the dash and the camera lens is mounted near the rear license plate.  I love the Avalanche.  Just hope it will be more reliable than the 1999 Silverado I traded in.  The brakes in the Silverado were horrible, plus I had brake failure last month and did not trust the safety of the truck.

Love the Avalanche.

Thanks for the tip.  That was it.  I had a loose bare wire on the trailer.  I was shorting the fuse.  Sorry for taking so long to get back.  Been just so busy.

just got back from canoe trip that I was able to use my trailer for taking a lot more than I needed.  Thanks again for the help.

I have a 2003 AV and a 2001 GMC Yukon XL. The Yukon can with a brake controller wiring harness, but my 03 AV did not. Can anyone tell me if the 01 Yukon harness will work with my 03 AV?? Thanks, Al. ???

No it won't. You can change some of the wires in the plug to modify it. The electrical architecture changed in the GMT 800's between the 2002 and 2003 model years.

BTW... :welcome: to the club...glad your here!

Sorry if this question has been asked an answered, I searched it and couldn't find what I was looking for.

My Question is, What is the wiring configuration I need to correctly wire the connector I got for my brake controller to the factory harness?

My friend works for GM and said he remembers seeing a bulletin that said the manual was incorrect.  Can anyone confirm or deny this?  And if so, where can I look to make sure all is correct?

If you have a 2007...the wires will be tucked up under the dash and should be labeled.

Is this what you are looking for,
BTW you should either put you Year and model of your AVY in your profile or add that info when you post.

Thanks for the response everyone.  Sorry I thought I put the year on there.  My AV is a 2005.  Would those diagrams still apply?

That put a whole new answer up. In 2005 the brake controllers were essentially plug & play. You could get the harness from a dealer that will plug into the Av and then wired into the controller, or, depending on the controller, you could purchase the harness from the controller manufacturer that simply plugs into the truck and then the controller.

In any case, be sure to get the proper model year harness. Beginning with the 2003 model year, the wiring has changed.

Alright, I'm sorry for my stupidity.  Heres the deal, I have a brake controller made by hopkins.  I bought the adapter for the chevys (although it doesn't list the AV, it lists the other chevys like the suburban) that is supposed to be plug and play.  The red wire is not plugged into any particular outlet at this point.  Is the diagram in the manual correct, or was my buddy correct in that there was a technical bulliten where the manual was correct.  I'd really hate to screw up my truck by putting wires where they shouldn't be.

I have a 02 1500 4wd,  I bought a brake controller, harness, and harness with a four wire brown plug that should plug into a factory harness somewhere but I can't find and I really don't want to rip my truck apart to find please help on location of factory harness :E:

Mystery solved.. way to go!

Does anyone know the GM part number for the brake control wiring harness? My 07 did not come with the harness and I have the heavy duty tow package and I spent an hour at the dealer parts department today and he could not find it at all?

OK.  So I have power going to the trailer brake controller (black wire from the utility block to the controller 12v+).  But, the light on the controller doesn't come on and there is no power at the plug coming out the back of the truck.   Nothing with the headlights on.  The 40A fuse under the hood is good, I even swapped it with another fuse just to be sure.  I've tried to trace the trailer harness from the rear, but it goes up into the driver's side rear quarters and I lose it from there.  Any suggestions where to start?

Thanks
