Haven't been here in a LONG time.  Just to follow up - I found mine taped under the seat in the back.

Find a friend with a Dodge or Ford and snag theirs.

It's the same from Chrysler Line, Ford, GM Line.

DanM100, your adapter below the truck is female?  Mine is male.
It has the pins sticking out from the plug, and the 7 - 4 is female.

Funny you should mention this. I got mine from my wife's old Dakota. She rolled it 1.5 times a few years back and it was totaled. I had thrown the adapter in my toolbox thinking I might need it some day. It was still sealed un the plastic until I needed to pull a trailer with the AV. Sure enough they are the same. So I use one from a Dodge.

long time no post in here.  wish I saw this back in 05.  towed my first trailer and didnt know how to hook up the trailer lighting to my 4 pin.  On my tx trip with a tow dolly I found the adapter at advanced auto...I felt dumb, and dont know how I missed it back in 05

Hi
I just wired a trailer I built with a lighting kit. I bought a 7 to 4 adapter from Walmart. The brake lights and signals work but not the tail lights or the side amber lights. The lights will flash without the ground. Anyone have a problem similar to this. Could it be the adapter or the plus on the truck. I am going to try another adapter. Where is a good place to mount the ground  :help:
Thanks  :B:

Sorry for the newb question...but this IS my 1st truck I've owned.  I have a 2006 non cladded.  I was just fixing the harness holder this weekend (it was bent up).  I was @ home depot and purchased a 7pin round to 5 pin flat adapter.  Why, cause I figured I'd need one.  But now as I read, I got to thinking that the adapter I'd need kind of depends on what I'm hooking it to correct?  So if I goto Uhaul and get a flat bed trailer, I could need a 7-4 pin?   It was only $14, but what is more common? I would like to keep one in the truck.

Oh, and how do I find out if I have this trailer braking stuff?

Yes what adapter you need depends on the trailer wire connector..

Uhaul has their own type but they sell an adpater that goes to 4 pin (has wires that come out to connect to the trailer..

4 pin works for most trailers w/o electric brakes or need for power...

7 pin is used for the minority that have electric brakes and/or require 12Vdc power

so I kind of wasted my $ buying this?  I mean it fits the truck just fine...so I'm assuming I would still need a 7round to something?

what are you planing to tow?
And what connector does it have?

probably just a flat bed car hauler from uhaul....i knew I jumped the gun. I guess I could go buy a 7 to 4 and then I'd be covered for pretty much what ever I towed.

just go to uhaul... they will sell you their harness thingy and hook it up for you..
Then keep this harness for whenever you haul a uhaul trailer...

Remember Uhaul is special in that they use individual wires to connect to their trailer....

Here is a great page with good information on the standards:
