Hi guys, it's me again :)
I just completed the 24 hour test drive on the AV. I asked the dealer about undercoating, since I live in upstate NY. He said it voids the warranty, and if anything on the truck is defective, the warranty can't be honored because of the undercoating being done after the fact. He did recommend that I have it done, because of all the salt on the roads. It seems like a catch-22 to me. Does anyone have any experience or words of advice on this? Also, the extended warranty is approx. $1,800. Is it really worth it?

I have aqlways heard that undercoating is a money maker for the dealership and is not worth it as it does not provide that much more protection

The extended warranty is worth as much as they can get you to pay for it. You 'll be amazed at what they can do if you continue to say no. They absolutly do not want you to leave the final finance and paperwork office without it. Especially if you have good credit and you finance with them. Try it. Just keep saying no and watch them work the rate, deductable, etc.

How can undercoating void the warranty when many dealers apply it and put it on the sticker weather you want it or not. Happened to me at a chevy dealership in Iowa. Many years ago and not on an Av though.

vehicles already come with an undercoating from the factory, when you have the dealer undercoat it is not done properly and mosture is trapped between the 2 layers of undercoating, thus it can make the vehicle rust faster... also some manufactures state that having an aftermarket undercoating will void warrenty (when I bought my dodge back in 98 I noticed they said it in the brochure). Just because a dealer does something to the vehicle does not mean it does not void warrenty.

example (rdtagd I am sure you have seen this out your way) alot of dealers have heavily modified and lifted trucks that are brand new sitting for sale, they will tell you since it is dealer installed that it is covered by the factory warrenty, when in reality it is not. That dealer takes on the liability for the aftermarket parts, not GM. If you have a problem and take it to the dealer you bought it from they will cover you, however if you go on a road trip, move, even just go to a different dealer in town because of a problem caused by the modification you will pay out of pocket. The only way that GM will cover it is if it is listed as "dealer installed option" by GM.

Just my .02 cents

Well if it voids the warranty then I wouldn't do it. If its already done, should get something in writing for protection. Live and learn.

AVGrrl:

Skip the undercoat. Same thoughts as Grey_Av. The Avalanche is also galvanized on both sides of the body panels. I think with galvanized body panels, factory undercoating, etc that the Avy is well protected. I live in NH and I am no stranger to snow/salt. As for an extended warranty many people have differing opions on the need for one. I bought one, but as others have said price varies widely. Arm yourself before going into dealer with options. And I caution you to consider only the GM plan as some aftermarket plans (Warranty Gold, etc) have been having problems. Do a search on extended warranty to see all the details. Here's what I wrote in a previos post:

About Warranty Gold, Warranty Direct, 1Source, or any other Warranty Co, I bought a GM plan because I believe we would have to have much bigger problems before I heard that GM is insolvent. Warranty Gold may, or may not, work out their problems this time. But what about next time, two years from now, etc?

I just purchased the GM "Major Guard" Warranty from OURISMAN Chevy of Maryland (I live in NH) for $1665 for a zero deductible 72 month - 75K mile. My warranty purchase date was considered the same day as the sale of my Avy. OURISMAN is NOT where I purchased my Avy. My Avy dealer wanted over $2K. Do a web search for "GMPP" and you will find many GM Warranty wholesalers. Black Pontiac is another major GM warranty wholesaler. Never pay retail for a GM warranty. I choose the GM warranty as Warranty Gold is still having problems, and Warranty Direct was about the same price as my GM plan. I have faith the GM plan will be around, and the service deprtment loves the GM warranty so no hassles for me. It is approx 5-8% more for the warranty when you purchase at a later date then the vehicle sale. Black Pontiac wholesaler gives rates for less than 10 days old, and another rate for greater than 10 days old but withinn the factory warranty. Hope this helps.
