External Temp Reads Wrong !?!

It's 47 degrees out here and my 03 AV thinks its in Florida! My External Temp Reading on my Mirror is Reading 98 Degrees The compass seems to be working fine. I have turned the display on and off, turned the car on and off and this still does not seem to reset of fix the problem. Any ideas out there? Has anyone else had this problem?

BTW, I did a search on this and the system said it did not find anything.

THe temp sensor is up front near radiator so if you sit still a while it will tend to read higher and higher until fresh outside air is drawn over sensor.....

Other wise take to dealer and see what is up..

I had the same problem. I thought it was a loose connection. Sometimes it would read correct, then I would look later and it would be at 99 or 98.
Took it back to the dealer. Told me no problem they wiuld replace the temp sensor. Picked it up at the end of the day, got in the truck and it read 94 not much improve ment. Now I was steamed. After giving the service manager a little ass chewing they took it and replaced the mirror. It's been fine ever sice.

i have noticed when you sit it reads really high. it read 128 degrees one day. nothing outside should have been moving here in VA.

The sensor is in front of the grill, and once you start moving you should notice the reading will change almost immediately. Mine has been right on the nose so go to the dealer if it is wrong, these sensors are real delicate (per my dealer)

Side note: I noticed over the weekend that mine was flashing between '34' and 'ICE' the other night. Is this a feature I missed reading the manual? I was impressed, because it WAS icey out.

The ice feature really is a nice feature...it takes all the guess work out of it ..and helps you to be safe...the Vw have something similiar....except there's is a snowflake....how nice...

The saga continues
I brought my AV to the dealer so that the temperature sensor, and mirror could be replaced, so that I could have a temperature reading that would be at least close.....not so
Today while driving it read 91, when it was in the mid 30's and I kept getting a readout of "IEE" and no it did not say "ICE"
This is very aggrivating I've read the posts is there something I'm missing in getting this resolved?

I know the feeling. ?It's a shame my first post is about a problem, but oh well ?. ?It doesn't detract from how much I love my Av.

My mirror is also messed up. ?Here's what I noted.

I don't believe that reading the engine area temp is the problem. ?I previously had a Yukon and I understand where you are coming from on that. But this is different in the symptoms. ?

When I start my AV in the morning it's "all cold" and the temp immediately goes to 98 or 95 deg. ?After about 10 minutes and the mood is right the temp "might" go to the correct outside temperature. ?

We took the AV on a long trip and it took it over an hour to finally come down to the correct temp.

When it's above 50F it seems OK. ?

Outside temp below 50F it will read 95-98deg., If you ?change it to Celsius it reads fairly close to actual (I don't want to see my temp in C so that's no good ).

I don't think it's the sensor. ?If the sensor was wrong then it would read incorrect when changed to Celsius. I think it's the mirror and that is what I am going to ask to have replaced.

When it does read below 35F it says IEE not ICE

Talked with the salesman when I picked up the truck (it was like this when I test drove it). Said they reset it and it was OK. ?Day after I picked it up it was 98F (actually 34F). ?Talked to the salesman and told him it was still doing it, he stated that a gentleman with a truck had the same problem and if I wanted he could be the guinea pig (to which I agreed) since they hadn't gotten ahold on it yet. I would rather them poke around on someone elses and learn than mine.

Any info would definately be appreciated. ?I will also keep you up to date as to what fixes my problem.

ALSO: Does anyone know where the sensor is that makes the mirror dim? Is it in the mirror? Is it on the back? ?Where is it? ahhhhh

IMy mirror is also messed up. ?Here's what I noted.

I'm not familiar with the details on the 2003, but I took a look at the wiring diagrams for 2002. I would be surprised if there are big differences.

The outside temperature sensor is behind the grille, and is wired directly to the inside rearview mirror. All of the circuitry required to decode and display the temperature is inside the mirror. There are no other components or circuitry involved. That means the problem is in one of three places: the sensor, the wiring, or the mirror with it's internal circuitry.

If the problem were in the sensor or wiring, then both the Farenheit and Celsius numbers would be wrong. However, since the Celsius seems reasonable, and Farenheit is not, It would seem that the problem has got to be in the mirror.

Resetting the electronics in the mirror may help in the short run, but it is apparently not a long term solution.

I would press the dealer to replace the mirror. I've not seen nor diagnosed your truck, but logic points to the mirror as being the culprit.

As this is another function that is strictly inside the mirror, this seems to confirm the need to replace the mirror.

Again, not sure on the 2003, but on the 2002 there are two light sensors: one on the front and another on the back of the inside mirror. When it sees that the view out the windshield is dark and the view out the back window is light, it assumes there is glare behind you and dims both the inside and outside mirrors at the same time. If the view out the back window is dark, or out the windshield is light, it does not dim.

The light sensors are behind small hole that are in recesses smaller than a pencil eraser head.

Thanks for the reply SS. I agree and that is the direction I will go. Maybe I'll have a new mirror next week.

I don't know if it's good or not to never get cold enough to see the ice warning. Probably is though, only time I want it that cold is when it's snowing and I am skiing.
You'll note that within a few days I was able to see sub 30 deg and 60+ temps. The joys of Tennessee weather.

Whew! I'm glad I guess that I'm not the only one with this problem. It showed up two weeks ago on our way to Disneyland, we tried several things to see what the cause might be. Man/Auto temp, seat warmers, CD/Radio, but nothing seemed to impact it. It comes and goes. I tried to reset but that didn't have any impact. Then I had to head to Eugene, OR so on the way there and back it acted up again. I guess I'll swing by the dealer next week to see about a new one, hope that solves the problem.

I just noticed that mine is now reading 91 degrees all the time...its in the 30's.

I also get the IEE at startup...no ICE.

It seems that I am having estcalating problems with this vehicle. I have a list of about 5 things that need looked at. All of them seem to be isolated to internal things.

This is my biggest gripe about vehicles from the big 3. Why do they seem to go 'cheap' on the details. I love my truck but it already sounds like a 20 year old house with all the rattles and squeeks!

This is a great site. I saw the ICE signal and figured it was time to get the mirror fixed. Now I know that was normal. The temp reading seems pretty good relative to other road side displays. It does heat up while sitting in traffic but I suspected that it was either close to the engine or the road.

I have always had it read in F and I can't get it to read in C. I haven't missed it so I have never taken this issue to the dealer. Anyone else have only F and no C reading or indication at all?

It's a little tricky to get it to change. This is what the owner's manual has to say on it:

2002 Owner's Manual, page 2-60:

Temperature Display

The temperature can be displayed by pressing the TEMP button. Pressing the TEMP button once briefly, will toggle the temperature reading on and off. To alternate the temperature reading between Fahrenheit and Celsius, press and hold the TEMP button for three seconds until the display blinks F and C. Press and release the TEMP button to toggle between the Fahrenheit and Celsius readings. After five seconds of inactivity, the display will stop blinking and display the last selection made.

Give this a try, and if you still can't get Celsius, prehaps a trip to the dealer is in your future.

Beefy sounds like you might have problems. I've had my Av. more than a year and it is still very quite and tight, rides better than my 95 delta 88LSS. Everyone that has ridden in it can't believe that they are in a truck even my mother in law, and she rode in it from Pitt. to Alanta & back. Happy motoring
