Just thought I throw this out -- Is the factory alarm/Pass Key ignition system sufficient anti-theft or do you think I should install a separate alarm like the Clifford, etc. Any thoughts would be appreciated :)

In my case, I felt the factory system was insufficient. I had a Prestige system installed. This is made by Audiovox, and has a two-way transmitter/reciever remote. (It lets you know if you are within the distance range if the alarm has gone off.

A nice bonus is that this system has a option for a remote starter, which I also had installed. Works great.

Altogether around $500 or so installed.

(FYI - The FCC recently had these 'recalled' because the transmitting distance was too far! They did not pull these out of stores, so if you can find one that still says 1000', you've got one of the good ones, IMO. The new ones will be around 500')

For me the factory is enough.

It all depends on where you live your insurance company etc.

I have not known anyone in my life to get a car stolen so call me lucky....

I would have to say that the factory alarm system, coupled with the onstar is enough for me also....I try to be very careful about where I park my Av and where I take it to..

Newark, NJ was on the top 10 for cities with the highest car theft rate here in NJ. One thing you also have to consider is when installing a third party device on a vehicle that is already equipted with a factory theft-detterent system that the two won't conflict somewhere down the line.

Good luck

Wish the factory alarm had a dash mounted LED. Just a tiny thing but it does help to keep the beginner car thieves away.

I learned the hard way in 1989 if they want it bad enough it doesn't matter if it will blow up like in a James Bond movie if they touch it, they'll find a way around any alarm and take it.

Thanks for the responses guys. I appreciate it. I live in a very nice upscale neighborhood in San Francisco and still had two cars stolen from in front of my house. One was a Chevy Blazer and the other was a Chevy Cavalier. I guess car thieves like to shop in nice neighborhoods. Have a nice day :)

Hey Doc I think those two cars stolen from you are on the top ten list for stolen cars.

Being the Av is new I do not see a large black market parts ring for it yet. Maybe in the future but it is too new.

If they steal it, I don't want it back, you know? What I am concerned with is breaking in and taking my equipment. I am a network test equipment field engineer. Since I park outside, and many times can't control where I park when visiting customers, I thought the alarm was a good idea.

I did not put in a LOJack type system. If they take it, I'll get a new one! If they steal my stuff, I have a messed up truck AND I have to get some new equipment...

Does anyone know about the "Silencer" system? It has an ignition kill switch and an impact sensor. Is this worth the extra $400 considering the factory alarm and Passlock system?

Also, anyone heard of the theft guard system...vehicle tracking? Is it worth the $341 since we already have On Star?

I believe theft guard is basically window etched VIN numbers on all the glass. What you are paying for is the entry of your vehicle in the database. This is a dealer add-on porfit item, IMHO.
This qualified for no discount on my auto insurance -- that speaks volumes...
