I have a 2003 ava with the bose 6 disk changer, is it possable to swap other GM Bose system, the one im looking at is from a 2003 trail blazer with cd/ cassete . ???????????? thanx for any input you may have :B:
 
also i have steering whell controls and wonder if the cd/ cass would still work with a differant head unit
 
If the radio you want to put in your vehicle has already been in another vehicle, it will be locked. Therefore, you will need to take that radio alaong with the vin # from the vehicle it came out of to the dealer and ask them to unlock it for you. Some dealers are cool and will do this as others won't, but they all can if they choose to do so.
 
I did just the opposite of what your asking. Cost $40.00 to reprogram the PCM. Didn't need the vin from the vehicle the radio came out of. Steering wheel controls (onstar if you have it) work as per spec. ;D
 
According to my delphi rep today, a radio from a Trailblazer won't work properly in the Av. Only a radio from another full size pu/suv will work and it will need to be reprogrammed for sure. Apparently, there are some pcm functions somehow tied into the radio when it is in the car (I don't understand this fully yet as I know from experience that the radios can be removed with no problems when adaptors (that are not vehicle specific) are used. Further, they told me that removing the oem hu and not replacing it or using a databus adaptor could definitely have adverse affects at some point in the future. He told me that the vehicle may one day decide that it is not "calibrated" properly and simply not start.
 
How about just swapping out the whole radio for an aftermarket unit? OEM radios are not cheap themselves, also. If integration with the steering wheel controls is a big issue, which I don't see any reason that it should not be since they are available for use at your fingertips, you can have a skilled installer use a multiplexer and tap into the head's controls and the steering wheel's buttons. If you can find an installer that is active with competition installs, he should have some experience with this, as ergonomics receive points in competition, so he will probably not have any trouble. If you get a guy that has never attempted this before, may the force be with you and your poor truck. Someone who has done it probably wouldn't kill you on the install price either. It may be worth checking into at least.
 
YOu show mw the installer that can tap into the databus and decrypt and interpret the commands with a multiplexer on an '03 vehicle and I will not only bow down to them, but i will pay them mucho $$$$ in return for the data they find. Companies like soundgate, Pac, and Peripheral have the budgets and technology to accomplish this and they still have not done it for the steering wheel controls,but if your "skilled" installer with a multiplexer can do it then bring him on!! Unless you can go directly to the buttons themselves, this has yet to be accomplished on any databus II vehicle. Now if you are willing to give up the non-audio controls on the wheel and just cut the radio serial data wire in the column (lite green by the way) then you may be able to integrate the audio controls to your aftermarket unit. (y)
 
If you were involved in audio years back, do you remember USD/Speakerworks? They still exist and are cranking out great cars, but that's not the point. They made a unit that allowed a single wire to perform multiple functions and carry multiple commands independent of one another. Like I said, if it is a top priority, it can be done, but I'd say that it will be quite an uphill battle finding an installer knowledgeable enough to pull it off. However, if said installer is located, the hardware is out there to do the job much easier these days than it was 10-12 years ago.
 
If you look you will find that PAC sells an adapter that will allow the use of a aftermarket radio and retain the steering wheel controls. I am a certified installer also GM certified tech and I have used them on Buicks and Cadillacs before. :B: Thanks
 
Very true upto '03--completely different animal!! Trust me, I have been giving some data to the head tech @ Peripheral on my findings in the '03 av and tahoe. The datawire for the serial radio data transmits ONLY class II databus language now, no current device can interpret those commands--yet. As with many of the other functions on the databus that have been decoded, so will the steering wheel controls. When it is done, it will be accomplished by tying into the databus line and interpreting the signals and then retransmitting an ir signal. Soundgate told me that they are about a month away from having this completed, and Peripheral is further back (although they won't tell you that). I am well versed in multiplexing technology, and that is no longer applicable with the advent of the databus II, unless you choose to cut the serial data wire and lose its other functions on the process.

If you look more carefully, you would find that PAC's adaptor won;t yet work on the '03s either. I am also a certifed installer and service approx. 100-200 new gm vehicles each month for aftermarket installations.

The last one I did was a 02 Buick Regal it worked great but I have not touched my Av or suburban and probably won't other than video for the kids
 
It's rather ironic that this topic came up today as I just spent several hours with the lead electrical tech at the gm dealer trying to discern the proper steering wheel serial data wire and then testing it when we found it. I did this mainly to prove that the part the Peripheral sent us could not work on the '03's in the manner and hooked upto the wire they claimed; in fact, they send a diagram of the main ignition block and of the "alleged" location of the lite green wire needed. Their diagram is WAY off on the AV and the Tahoe. they claim that their info came from the GM website, but after watching the tech download the correct info from the gm server, I would have to say that Peripheral is wrong.

Now the '02 gm's, for the most part, did use multiplexing on the remote control wire, but,as I stated earlier, that is a totally different animal running in a different forest ;)
 
A bit off topic, but............post some pics of your finished system Kodiak, the last I saw was the sub enclosure being built. What kind of numbers did you end up getting out of that box, as in -3dB and SPL?
 
Will take some pics this weekend. Haven't had a working rta in years as we do mainly dealership work or high end esoteric systems on BMW, Porsche, and Mercedes. I would guess the spl to be high 130's--it'll definitely move your innards (sp?) around. The digital amp puts out enormous amounts of power, but lacks the absolute control and subtleties of a class a or a/b amp with somewhat similar power ratings.
 
What would be really cool is figuring out a way to use the CD player that comes in the new Z24s, they now play MP3s, I am guessing it is only a matter of time until they pass this feature along to the other models.
