Has anybody managed to get an OEM GM XM Receiver out of a junkyard or any other vehicle and make it work in their vehicle?

It's just not that simlple. there are many plugs and harnesses that would have to be obtained as well. Also, your radio would need to be updated by the dealer to recognize the xm.

I was wondering this today too, while wondering around Best Buy looking at the Delphi XM receiver. I'd much rather have it OEM than add-on.

We'd need:

  • Receiver with XM
  • XM roof antenna
  • Antenna cable/harness
  • Programming by dealer

Am I missing anything?

CraigF,
Your not missing anything, and from the research I have done, I think I can make it work. I have a contact who is getting me one right now, and I have spoken with the dealership and they think they can make it work. There are only two harnesses coming from the receiver, one that goes to the radio and the onther that goes to the antenna. I am not going to drill a hole in my roof for GM's antenna, instead I have opted to use a Terk XM3, which I believe has the same plugs as a GM antenna. I just wanted to know if anyone else had tried this, and what their experiences were.

As long as you have an RDS GM headunit, all you need is the XM receiver to be able to receive XM signals. I am getting my receiver from a guy who pulls them out of junked cars. Then the dealership is going to reprogram my radio and the receiver. I will keep you guys up to date on my progress.

What would be involved if I wanted to swap out my regular Bose, 6 disc changer radio w/o XM and replace it with the same factory radio but WITH XM?
Would this be a straight swap for my 2003? or would I have to add a special antenna or other "items" to make the XM work?

thanks!

I thought the XM reciever was built into the head unit. It isnt'? Can you get another? If so, PM me. :)

The XM unit is not built into the H/U. It is a completely separate unit mounted behind the passenger side airbag, right above the glovebox. If my experiment goes well, I will give you the info. you will need to contact the guy I'm getting mine from. I just don't want to give out the info. if this doesn't work, or I get screwed over somehow. Just protecting the innocent!!

Right now I'm on the phone with my dealer's parts department. I don't think this guy even knows what XM is!

CraigF,

You can't get the receiver from GM, they won't sell it to you. I'm getting mine from a guy who pulled it out of a wrecked truck.

I moved your thread to the A/V section where there are plenty of existing XM radio topics that may interest you.

I also bet someone will come around and answer your question or point you to an existing answer....

BTW
Welcome to the club

There is no reason why it won't work. If your computer is reprogrammed to accept Xm-all should be well.

Any good parts yard should be able to get you one. Better yet, go to a "Pull it yourself" yard and get it even cheaper and learn how to open the dash on a wreck instead of your AV.

So now the question is what model years have a compatible XM receiver? I have a 2003 Av, which makes use of a different data bus than the 2002 had, right?

I'm not sure about the XM radio; I would imagine it would be the same as Sirius (I had Sirius installed in my Av)

I stayed with my factory radio w/o satellite radio. The parts I needed were as follows:

1. Satellite radio head unit.
2. FM modulator.
3. Satellite radio antenna.
4 to antenna adapters to plug the FM modulator into the radio with, because the factory GM antenna is smaller than normal.

Hope this helps.

For my 2002....

I bought the GM aux 9 thingy...which hooks in back of radio and gives me RCA inputs.....

Then SONY XM radio kit for car (and house hehehehe) This has holder cradle antenna.....and cig lighter doohickey for power.....

Then I bought extra Cig lighter power thingy from Radio shack.....hid it under dash and hooked to keyed power.....plugged sony into it....

Bought Stereo MINI headphones to RCA adapter wire thingy and 3ft RCA wires.....

Mounted Sony in the CD holder place behind the door....and hooked everything up....

SO XM comes on with AUX button on stock radio

CraigF,

I'm not sure about all Gm vehicles, but I know for a fact from 03' to present, the trucks and suv's will support XM.

Man, I called a couple salvage places. no one knows what I'm talking about, but are then quick to say they don't have it.

The DIY places don't have new models.

Thanks for the replies guys. But basically all I want to do is purchase a factory radio the same as mine but that includes XM.

Would this be a basic straight swap with my existing unit? I really like the way the factory radio looks and sounds, and I dont' want to replace it with a 3rd party radio or have to use any additional XM tuner device.
although I am getting great ideas from you guys so keep them coming :)

Why not join the conversation at this thread:

Factory XM

Maybe YGMN can lock this thread now.

Craig

I merged it instead......hehehe

I may be able to add some info to this thread. I've been doing a lot of research in putting this together and basically, the XM unit isn't serviceable through GM. So, you can't buy the unit from GM.
The way they have it set up is you have to have a VIN of the vehicle and they swap it out. Don't ask me why GM does this.
So the only way you are going to get one of these is either ebay or a junkyard.

Who does the swapping and how much does it cost? That really makes no sense to me at all. IF you get the XM module that goes behind the pass. side air bag and you take your vehicle to a dealership and have them put a TechII on it to tell the computer, hey you have an XM module you need to support now, this should work. Have you done that yet Jason?

HOracio, take a peek behind your glove box and I don't believe that you will find the harnesses for the xm. We should have a newer xm adaptor within a week that will allow oem integtration of a pioneer tuner with almost all headunits including the 6 disc in-dash. This setup will be far easier to setup than trying the factory route (don;t forget that you will have to take it to the dealer and pay them to reprgram your vehicle to access the xm if you can even get it to work) and will save you $$$
