Just got a call from local GM (my Av is in for general maintenance) , and I wanted to see what some of my fellow members here thinks of this.

They just installed my NUIMage Flame Cluster, and called to tell me that my "AFTERMARKET TIRES CAUSED MY SPEDO TO BE OFF BY 8 KM/ Hr ." The knocking in the front end is because my "FRONT BRAKE PADS ARE WORN TO THE BONE". Now, they say that "BECAUSE MY SPEEDO was OFF by 8KM/hr, and IT MAY HAVE AFFECTED MY BRAKES.....blah blah!"

SO I request feedback on this please!! I went from 265/70-17's (stock) to 295/50-20's (aftermarket), and ACCORDING to 3 different ONLINE TIRE CALCULATORS I have used, my ERROR is between 0.0% and 0.6% at most!!!
SO how can they tell me it was off by 8 KM/HOur on the speedometer???

MY PERSONAL guess is that when they installed my new cluster, they did not put the needles back on properly.

INfo? Ideas? Feedback is all appreciated!
Thanks guys!

Darryl.

This is the one I'm concerned about, How much Heavier are your Aftermarket Rims Compared to the stock ones?

new cluster as in just a cluster swap? I may have missed your other posts about your new mod (haven't been on much lately :cautious:) but a cluster swap wouldn't involve the needles ???

JW, the rims are a little heavier of course, but not a whole lot; I know the centrifugal force is increased, which does put more stress on the pads for stoppage, but I have only had my dubs on for less than 2 months.

Rich, its one of those NUIMAGE overlays I guess is the more appropriate way to put it. The needles have to come off to put this one in..... sorry if I confused you.

8 km/hr at what speed?

if it is 8 at all speeds then the needles are wrong.....

when tire diameter is different then stock....the speed difference would not be a constant km/hr off at all speeds but rather a small amount off at low speeds and a higher amount off at fast speeds.......

YGMN, yes, they said 8km off at all speeds, so thats what I suspected too (they put the needles on incorrectly) . Thank you for the backing there. (y) Just wanted to see if my suspicions were correct. To show THEM that THEY are perhaps wrong in blaming my new tires, I actually printed off 3 different copies from 3 different websites of the comparison in the two sizes, and faxed them down.

As for issues with the brakes, these started while on vacation to NIagara Falls, and at this point my stock tires were on!! and its gotten worse since!! As I said, my dubs have been on for LESS THAN 2 months cumulative!!
(OH! One more point to mention, is that I complained about "SQUEALING WHILE BRAKING" to the local GM dealer back in June, BEFORE my 20's were put on as well; this should help my cause since they have record of my complaint) (y)

how many miles on truck? Certain driving habits will make pads wear out prematurely.....city driving, quick stops....etc etc....

I say drive down there and have them show you the brake pads to confirm....and have them show you a new set of pads to compare to.....

I remember you changed pads to some high performance pads?

He's right,
I hear this crap all of the time from the local 4wheelers. "my speedometer is off by 5mph." It's simple geometery. If the tire is 10% larger in circumfrence(s?) it's going to be off by 1mph @ 10 mph, 5mph @ 50mph, and 10mph @ 100mph.

YGMN, I have had my Av for 2 years now, but there is only <29,000 Kilometers on the odometer (I think thats about 18,000 miles> .
Mostly stop and go as there are no highways where I live.....
I was going to upgrade to the AC DELCO DURASTOP system, but even GM CANADA could not give me a straight answer on whether this was better than whats currently on my AV... :cautious:

I think you are correct that your needles were not re-calibrated when they were removed after they installed your overlay. A lot of aftermarket places can do this for you at a minimal cost if not for free.
After this is done use your Hypertech to calibrate your DUB 20"s so that everything is correct.
HTH ;)

Yak

I would say the needle was not installed correctly.. I had the same problem with my needles, but fortunately I had a computer hookup to adjust it accordingly.....
As for your brake problem.... STOP the city driving!!! Oh, I mean walk to work, now that its summer you will only take you an extra 3 minutes...... 1 minute with vehicle and 4 minutes walking ( >:D >:D )

My question in regards to your brakes would be, how long did the brakes last on your past vehicles.... Judge accordingly.....

As for brake upgrades... spend the money and get a really goooooooooooooood set........ Don't go with the GM upgrade... IMHO.

UPDATE:: I printed off the " tire calculator " charts from the web, so they dropped the "Its our tires" issue, and just fixed it with their computers. (y)

They installed NEW FRONT BRAKE PADS due part of the rattling noise in the front being the "anti-rattle" (?) clips on the brakes were broken/worn away? This part I am not too sure on, since they told me I still have almost 10mm of pad left on both wheels, but since the clips were broken, they replaced the pads, under warranty.

NOW!! ONE more question that I am looking for FEEDBACK/INFO on!!
--> There is still a VERY SLIGHT knock in the front, but its ONLY pretty well evident on TURNING in either direction. When it occurs, I can actually feel the slight bump/vibration in the steering!

Help! Thanks! (y)

Is this knock even worse when going over speedbumps or turning on in parkinglots where the pavement is uneven. If so it is your crossmember. They have tightened mine once and it went away. It is starting to do it again. I was about the go to the dealership myself.
