First Oil Change

Guys, there is a lot of misinformation here. The GM monitor is NOT an idiot light,as has been stated. It is a rather sophisticated computer software that meaures things like temperature, cold starts, etc.Check this link and also read the manual about this system :) :) :)

http://www.gm.com/company/gmability/environment/gm_and_the_env/releases/sae_oilmonitor_051601.html :)

It does in no way "sample" the oil.So it cannot know if you are using synthetic vs dino oil.You will have to make that adjustment in your own mind.

At the very least,it's a great help--even if not usd as GM intended.

Thanks for the link. I didn't know the system was that reliable. Is it? I would love to minimize the amount of oil used, however, I have a hard time absolutely trusting the computer to tell me when to change. Cynical? yes.

I did just receive the oil plug valve that the another topic was talking about. I can't wait to install it. It will make oil changes much easier. I ordered one with a nipple! No more oil blowing in the wind baby!

The engine oil change light is a bunch of crap. ?Basiclly an idiot light for women who don't know when to change it. ?
I'm using it...waiting for the 3rd change oil notice.

I am not a woman but I always thought I was a lesbian in a man's body :-* :-*

Well I am known to ride/run my toys hard, but reward them with loving care (kinda like a disfunctional parent-child relationship?) and this includes whipping the avy hard, but changing the oil at 3K - 4K intervals. If you do exercise your judgment and change your oil sooner than the oil change light, reset it at that time so at the very least it comes on as a backup reminder.

as for the engine hours meter - sweet! thanks for the info. I never knew . .

I changed my oil at 500 miles (did not reset the oil light), changed the oil again at 3000 miles (still did not reset the oil light). Was driving into work today, and the change oil light came on at 5410 miles. My mileage consists of two 1600 mile (round trip) trips, with the rest of the mileage being a combination of highway and city driving.

For those of us that get the oil changes at the dealership at least have the comfort in knowing that they will reset the change oil light after the oil change.....

I always double check before I pull out of the lot that they did reset the light.....they document it on your work order and should be in your service record via internal network....

I got my AV as a Christmas present from my wife. My Tahoe wasn't due back on the lease until April 1st. So we only drove the AV on the weekends and special occasions.

The mileage crept all the way to 4019 before the Change Oil Light came on in the system center.

This was the first oil change. I went into the service area at the dealership when they changed the oil. Didn't look too bad.

NJAV, don't be so sure their resetting the monitor. I had mine done whole on vacation and on the way home, it lit up. I still had 800 mile to the 3K mark and I had been doing all highway driving. But you are correct, go ahead and do it yourself before you pull out of the lot.

You ever have one of those days...

Well with 1260 miles I thought I would drop the oil and filter for the first time.  No problem with the oil (it comes out fast and furious)...but you do have to watch the oil collector plate (skid plate).  Then I went to pull the filter  :p.  The factory does not observe the 3/4 turn rule .  I stuggled by hand  ??? and with a one of those multi fit cap adapters (no room next to the oil pan for it).  I fotgot that my GM adapter is in Ohio with my boat :( and only had a dedicated cap for my previous f150 .
I was all ready with 7 qts of mobile 1 and a new filter...now what-
two options...

The best thing i have found to get gm filters off next to the oil pan is band wrenches

I'd just hire a private charter company to handle it. Expensive but worth the cost.

Thought I would post a new topic since the other one was so long.

My first oil change was at 1000 miles.
Second was at 3000 miles
Third was at 6100 miles

After the 3rd oil change I decided to test the oil monitor and see how long it would take before the light would come on. I did not see the change oil light till 10,800 miles. I do a lot of city driving my last oil change was done on 1/19/02. Just under 3 months. Going with the oil monitor I went 4700 miles since my last oil change. I will keep using the oil monitor from this point foward and see how it acts with the hotter TX summer temps coming up.

My washer fluid light came on at the same time and it took a little less than 1 gallon to fill up.

Every new car ever built has come with an oil life monitor....it's called an odometer

First oil/filter change at 1000 miles.....if you think that's too soon, cut apart the filter and go inside with a magnet
Second oil/filter change at 3000 miles.....ditto
All others for the life of the vehicle....every 3000 miles thereafter

Wasting money? Perhaps, but changing your own at $31.00 for an AC Delco filter ($4 at Wal-Mart) and 6 qt. Mobil 1 ($27 on sale at Costco) keeps the costs down

Wasting oil? Definitely not, since it all gets recycled

In the 15+ vehicles I've purchased new since '72 I've never had mechanical work done on an engine other than non-oil related electrical/tuneups/belts and hoses PCV valves or water pumps and never had a an oil leak from a valve guide seal, crank, or cam shaft seal. And unlike some I've never suffered a leaking filter, leaking or rounded drain plug, or stripped oil pan threads from a mechanic using an air wrench to reinstall the plug. Also, I never had to wait to make an appointment and always know it is done right.

Sure newer SM/SN grade oils especially synthetics are much better than the SA/SB grades of 40-50 years ago.......but engines ran with 4 qts in the sump at 165 F in those days with at most a PCV valve as emissions and now they run at 215 F with 6 qts. in the sump and a lot of emissions waste being recirculated back into the engine. I've heard some mechanics who refer to these OLM (oil life meters) as engine killers, going to up to as much as 12K on an oil/filter change. The competition for marketing maintenance free/extended schedule maintenance vehicles is not conducive for manufacturers to even consider recommending more frequent oil changes even if it does extend engine life. The longer oil is in an engine the more microfine carbon, dirt, rust, etc is in suspension that can pass through the filter or get bypassed once the filter clogs.....the suspended dirt may not be of sufficient hardness or size to damage metal components, but there are a lot of soft flexible seals, and like ultra fine grit wet sandpaper, the size and amount of the particles will determine the amount of material removed through motion which will wear down with time.

Plenty of oil changes in my days for myself, friends and relatives. Your eyes don't lie......new oil goes in a fairly clear deep yellow in color, at 3K comes out an opaque deep brown and at 6K+ comes out dark black....and black is not beautiful when it is the color of oil spilling out into a drain pan.

I just switched to Mobil 1 synthetic.  Is 5 or 6K safe?

Nick

I admit that I overdo it....can't break old habits especially since I do a lot of mixed hauling/mountain driving and I like to check out the undercarriage and grease at the same time, I'd say 5-6K is OK on synthetic.....The 5K intervals we use appears to be good enough for my son's '11 Malibu's 4 banger (20K+ per year high speed driving) which is always over 55% on the OLM at the time of change.

I had switched from dino to synthetic 3 years into my '07 and even if only my imagination, it seems to run better on it and come out a little cleaner on changes. Always a good idea to switch to synthetic, less break down of oil, less natural contaminants, less engine wear.

Three things with early NBS trucks.....turn off AFM, accept the oil life monitor's advice, and do not routinely run in 4 Auto. A fourth could be a peremptory replacement of the 4-spd with a Jasper. Do this and you most likely will never need OnStar.

Well, I realize it's Mother's Day, but this one is too cryptic for me.

Regarding OLMs:

Changing your vehicles' oil and filter is like washing and changing your underwear.

Is it prudent to routinely wash and change them? Or do want to instead wait until someone says you are starting to stink?

I think changing the oil before the monitor tells you to is overkill.  I've put nothing but synthetic in my '03.  If I remember correctly, one fill with Mobil 1, one fill with Royal Purple, and all of the rest with Red Line.  After over 260K miles, I'm currently into the motor because of a failed lifter which took out the cam.  Considering the extra load that the Crane high-lift cam plus high pressure dual valve springs put on those lifters for most of their life, plus shifting at 100 rpm short of where the lifters would develop a tick, not to mention other high-performance parts on the engine, including a supercharger, I'm not attributing lifter failer after a quarter-million miles on running oil per the oil life monitor.  One of the rod bearings was looked at and checked with plasti-gauge - it looked new.  The facts speak for themselves.  If your technical skills are based on color, then do what makes you feel good.  I'm sold on synthetics with changes as recommended by the factory.

What cryptic? I thought it was pretty clear. Not given to wordy posts.

Are you more likely to stay in "3" in stop & go traffic?

No, why would I do that? Assuming it would even be available in today's selectors.
