First Trip with 4.56 gears on my 2006/2500 Avalanche!

:B:  I have 285-75R-16E rated E  ,  I am running 4.56 and @ 65 MPH and 2850 rpm's!  In Ca. I run @60 MPH and 2400 rpm's and I have no problems in the hill now. I am moving up to 285-65R-20E, 2 in. Taller to get the RPM Down. For me 4.88 0r lower would be to much unless I lived in Co. and had to cross the Rocky's! Donald

Very nice, I have pulled 15k lb (gross around 22k lb) over the Rockies a few times, and other than power, the truck does great.  I have 4.10s, but am considering 4.88 or 5.13s after reading your thread. (to go with 255/85R16s).  5.13s really woke up my '01 Ram 1500. (on 37"s).

The lower gears should keep your trans happier too.  A few years ago a friend of mine rented a suburban to tow his rig with to Moab, he could out pace me on the hills (he was grossing about 14k lb and I was about 17k lb.) but my trans was staying sub 210 deg where as the 6 speed was hitting 270deg + in the suburban.

  I just finished a complete brake upgrade with GM 2500 Pads front and back for towing and I now have 110,000 miles on my truck with the Original Brakes. I know because I checked the part #'s and they were with the factory lock tight on the bolts as well. Remember I have 4.56 gears in the truck now for towing with a 13,000 lbs. Load. So I went with Power Stop calipers, Bi Directional Rotors left and right side rotors and GM front and rear pads. Then I topped it off with a new set of BFGoodrich KO 2 275-70R-18 126E tires and new wheels for towing plus I had 2 in. 6060 aluminum billet spacers for the rear custom made so that my hub centers were tight fit for the rotors and wheels. Here are some pic's! I felt that 20 in. wheel would look to large?  Donald

Looking good sir,

:B:  There are a lot of cars and trucks that have Directional Rotors left and right side rotors that have been put on backwards. The give away is that both of them will be running the same way. Directional Rotors are made to scoop the air into the rotors to help cool and relive the gas from the pads as well. There is always a right and a left side and they still need to be going forward with the truck or car to be installed the right direction. Many rotors are not Directional and one will be forward and the other backwards and are less money most of the time. All four of my rotors are running forward with the truck. and for towing I believe that this was best for my weight and towing.

Stick with Dextron 6 is my suggestion. The 2500 has the big cooler in front of the radiator. The pan is not needed but is nice if you want to do that. I put the Magtech differential pan on mine because the OEM rusted. I would do that first cause your hauling a lot of weight.

My rear brakes were the weak point on my truck- I replaced pads at every 40k miles.

 Avalon thanks,  I have my brakes set higher on the controller so not as much pressure is needed. I have new GM Lining on as well. And my trailer brake show Very little wear as well. Donald

:B: I have decided to put a larger transmission pan on my 4L80E. And go to synthetic fluid? Any Thoughts anyone?

Your truck was factory filled with Dexron IV. From all the research I have done, all highly recommended builders say stick with Dexron IV. I just had to have my tranny rebuilt at the end of last year so I had the opportunity to go with Dexron VI but I didn't. With the horsepower/torque I'm running I didn't want to risk the "slicker" synthetic possibly causing problems down the road. Since you tow heavy loads I would stick with Dexron IV and choose to change it out more often. It doesn't cost much to do a drain and refill if you do it yourself.

:B: Update Time!  Last month I had my trailer hitch completely Reinforced to protect My Frame Farther back with 2in. x 2in. x 1/4in. square tubing. Here are some pic's.

:B:  Just dropped my truck at our Local AAMCO Dealer. Steve is putting my MAG -HYTEC # 4L80E-A Transmission pan on and changing my fluid to AMSOIL ATL Synthetic.

:B: Avlanche 2500   I just put these Mirrors on my LT!! $299.00 They even have Memory for the mirrors for LT Trucks. I have not seen any other ones that you can push your seat memory button and set them, plus it works with your Reverse backup down tilt as well.

MS03  Still working on my Avalanche thinking about Air Bags? But why do I need air bags IF my trailer W/WD hitch keeps it Level with the truck? I have absolutely no problems with it towing?

You don't need bags with a triple axle trailer because its balanced better than a dual axle trailer.

I don't have air bags either.

Yea you don't need air bags with WDH, that's one of their benefits. You typically use air bags with out a WDH or when not towing and just have a load in the bed. For those that haven't leveled your AV then the it's not usually a issue because these come with a nose down stance and with a load in the bed just levels it out.

:help:  MS03 can you tell me what parts I would need for a Second battery minis the wiring, like the brackets and hold down? I have a 200 amp. charger all ready, Its the Alpine and amps. sucking the power when parked. I also have a Glass Battery for the factory battery. No more glass battery and went to AAA battery for the go anywhere replacement. Now I will go to chevy and pickup the dual battery setup.  Donald

Looks like the part number have not changed.

i know the thread is kind of old but how do you like the magtec pan? ive had to take the stock one off a few times and its a pita trying to drain it. als what mirrors are thoes, i bought a set of kool vue gm ones but they wobbled in the wind so i took them off and sold them.

I'll give you my opinion, mag-hytec is good but it's waaaay to close to the exhaust cross over pipe. I put a exhaust shield on it.
