See the Problem and the Fix Below:

Here is my problem (I think): I had a 2000 Extended Cab 1500 with Heated Leather 10 way seats. When I started looking for the Avalanche this was a Must Have Option. It is currently 7 months old with 9K miles and the seats have wrinkled and look worse than the truck I traded in with 50K miles on it.

Has anyone else had this problem. A dealer (unofficially) told me that GM went with a lower cost supplier in 2003 and thats when the wrinkles started. I've taken (my preceived problem) this all the way to GM's executive offices and been told this is normal wear by all levels of thier management?

It's the panel that is on the bottom outside (on the passengers and drivers seat). The balance of the seating leather surface is smooth ~ the way these outside panels were when I bought it. I feel GM knows of this problem because they have issued a special service document in March of this year, # 04-08-50-006, for customer complaints.

That same panel on the rear seats is made of plastic, not leather. I feel that those panels are part of the seating surface but I guess it must not be or GM would have made them leather? Anyway I love the avalanche except for this wrinkling? Maybe my 2000 1500 Pickup was just rare, Or am I just too picky because of paying $2,375 above the base seats to get leather option on the avalanche?

Give me your opinion ~ Please

thanks ~ Tom

THE FIX!!!!!!!! July 9, 2004

I replaced the outer panel with a more durable material similar to the way the rear seat outer panel (on a 2004) comes from GM. The new panels (on each side) matchs the vinyl on the sides of the seat and is grainy, not smooth. The cost for both sides was $234. material and labor including Texas state sales tax. I'll try to add a picture to show how it looks now. If you would like me to email you a picture then write me at thomaslain@comcast.net and I'll send you a set.

Good luck with all the other people with wrinkles! and Yes I did use Meguiar's on the seats from day 1 and I plan to continue to use it!
Tom  ;D

Tom, so far on my 2003 the seats look great. I don't have the wrinkling on mine. Maybe mine are an exception but so far so good.

Important question to ask. Did you ever do anything to maintain the leather like using a leather cleaner and then a high quality leather conditioner?

I've seen a lot of people complain of their leather getting cracked or wrinkled, only to find out that they never did a thing to maintain it. :6:

Most auto leather will wrinkle if not all except for maybe Rollys Royce and Bentley which use a uncoated leather.... (Gm, ford, Chyrsler etc coat their leather with a vinyl so it last longer and does not have problems with staining)

Some manufacturers put holes in the leather to help hide and reduce this wrinkling......

FYI Vinyl seats will wrinle as well.....

My 2002 has some wrinkles.....but the color is consistant and there are no signs of wearing......

Good luck

I disagree regarding the normal wear and tear, if yours looks anything like mine. I have that problem on the driver seat. And yes, I have tried to take care of the leather. Rest of the seats look OK. I will mention it next time I have my AV in for maintenance. Mine looks like it will probably tear, or wear through within a year. It is a 2003 Z-66 with about 20,000 miles on it. I have had it for 11 months.

My 2004 Z-71 with Leather looks just like the picture from cudaowner. Both the Driver and Passenger seats look the same. However the Rear Seats look the same as the Day I picked up the AV. There is only 7K miles on the Odometer.

I have had several GM vehicles with Leather seating, none look like this. They all had a lot more mileage than the AV. For the most part they had very few distress "wrinkles" if any.

I guess I will be asking the same question when I go to the Dealer for service. The last time I was in, the only thing I could tell the Service Dept Rep that needed attention was the Oil needed changing. The Service Rep said "Are you sure? Have you forgotten anything that needs attention??. Told him no, and he looked "Hurt" that he didn't have anything to write up, GO FIGURE!

Well that was before I saw this thread!

NOW HE WILL HAVE SOMETHING TO WRITE UP, gosh darn it!!!!!! I want wrinkless leather seat covers, and I want them now.

(Whew I feel better now having said that. I finally have something wrong with the AV so I can get something fixed with that warranty money they held back.)

Getting back to being serious, I am not happy with the rapid decline of the seating surface. I feel that if GM "cheeped out" by switching suppliers, then they need to admit their mistake and step up to rectify the problem.

Just my 2 cents worth,
Dan

:cautious:1700 miles on my 04, and from sliding in and out we have a little krinkling (not heavy wrinkling ) happening. I am not trying to slide in and out.

I have 8000 miles on my Av and I have the wrinkling on both the drivers and passengers seats...but only on the side of the seat closest the door....the back seat looks like new....but I guess no one really sits back there either....

I have heard that because of the "coating" on our seats that leather conditioner will not penetrate it and therefor is a waste of money.....has anyone else heard this???

Somewhat true......

Applying it helps keep the top surface clean and protected...and some manufacturer;s coating has extremely tiny small holes to allow the leather to breathe....but they are small enough to not let water soak in.....so by allowing the conditionwer to sit for a long time it may penetrate.....

To test of protective coating.....place a drop of water on the leather.....if it is coated it will bead up....if it is uncoated it will soak in leather...and leave a water mark until it dries out.......

Both of the front seats on my 03 are wrinkled. My back seats are just about showroom-new looking. I've used the Zaino leather treatment on both.

This is simply my opinion, as stated before, and this time very bluntly...

GM (full-size truck) leather sucks. Period.

I mean no offense to the scores of people with GM leather, but 'tis the truth :cautious:

My '03 with 9K miles leather looks like the picture as well. Very disappointed.

This is exactly why when I got my latest and greatest AV, I got the buckets but without the leather. My friend has a 2004 Z66 w/leather and it's wrinkling just like the ones above. If someone has any luck w/the service dept/Chevy, please post about it so I can pass it on. I don't have the butt warmers, but I love my sport cloth! :B:

RichUF,
You hit the nail on the head. Love the truck but not only does the leather suck, but they put pleather where the body touches, despite their brochures. The headrest, elbowrest, and some of the seat panels are pleather. Very disappointted, but understand the economics.

to be blunt again...

economics my a$$, they want $2,000+ for that leather

The leather in our very economical VW Passat blows this crap away, and it's a '99, with constant kid abuse and dogs. Yes it's starting to wrinkle (a little), but is holding up nicely considering its age and abuse. And I'm pretty sure it's FULL leather.

GM needs to get a clue.

mine kinda looks like the pic below too. i try to keep them cleaned, and conditioned, to keep the material as supple as possible. i am hopeful that this will keep the wrinkles from turning into cracks. at least in the near future.

......... try not to "slide" in and out on it.
That's tough to do (or not do) as high as these dam things are. :cautious:

Okay, normally if there is a problem and I don't agree with it! I would not bother but in this case I feel it's only fair!

I have 02 2500 with full leather seating!

I got this because I fealt it would be tougher than cloth for my Doggies!

They are in and out all the time and I have to say that the leather is holding up fantastically!

No scratches no scuffs!

I had it treated when purchased and treat it once a month to a fine leather protector! ;D :D

My just-installed Starboards running boards help that a little. I've noticed the tendency to slide in and out until now.

I have a 04 with the sport cloth inserts - and I am having the same problem - I only have 900 miles! Very Frustrating...I have a friend that is a service advisor at a Chevy dealer in NorCal - I'll keep everyone updated....
