Four Brake lights and turn signals

Now you need Amber turn indicators!!

(I like them, I know you don't).

I have the Euro lights with this Mod. My question is If I put Amber bulbs in the top, would it not be confusing if I have the bottom signaling too when the brake is not applied and it's Red?

i'm not familiar w/ the "euro lights" but, if the ones you want to be amber light up as brake lights too, then it will be illegal (i know, so what)

Euro style are the ones in my siggy pic, the clear chrome ones. My mod has all 4 as brake w/ no turn signal, all 4 as turn signals (2 left 2 right) w/ no brake, and only top ones as turn signals with both applied (bottom brake lights override turn signals).

Thanks to JHC for the idea on this one.

I saw this done on Hangman's truck at his house, and liked it.

The one thing that bothered me is the extra current load put on the trailer lights to run the turns/brake (9A extra current).
I tow a boat, run sail panel leds, and a line of fire off of the turn signals on the trailer harness already, so pulling more current was not a good idea. Also, cutting the existing wires and running from the trailer harness was not an option, if I blow the trailer fuse in salt water, I don't want to loose my brakes/turns.

So, I modified the diagram to use relays to keep using the brake/turn signal power, but trigger the crossover between the two with the relay triggered by the trailer wires. The relay only draws 30mA off the trailer wires to run the coil, so no big current drain.

This circuit works exactly as the JHC diode version.  When you hit brakes only, all 4 tail lights go on.  When you hit directional only the 2 lights on the directional side will flash.  When you hit the brakes and the directional, 3 lights will be on solid and the lower one on the directional side will flash.

I used 2 radio shack 275-248 12vdc coil,10A @ 24VDC relay, and 2 packs (4 total) 276-1661 diodes.
The diagram shows the pin numbers to use on a standard 12V automotive relay.

Ginman, is this the relay you used or do you use a regular 12V Relay...?  For some reason it doesnt look right...  I have all the parts to do it without the relay, but I'd rather this way...

I'm thinkin about doing this mod soon, along with the sail panel lights.  And just like you I occasionally tow and I don't want an over load of my electrical system out back...

Any tips or step by step's would help / be apreciated...

Thanks Bro

whick relay did you end up using?

:help:  What happens if I do not hook up the wires and diodes from the trailer harness, and just hook up the 4 diodes behind the tailight housings. What function or functions won't work? Thanks

I installed mine in the tail light housings. Why would anyone use the trailer harness?

Looking at the diagram on the first page it appears the the harness wires are used.

Forgot about that part, it's been a while.  :beating:

What I meant to say is all the wiring I did was housed behind the tail lights.

So that means yours uses some of the wire from the trailer harness? :help:

I just went and looked. I added one wire to each tail light from the trailer harness, green on the right and looks like yellow on the left.

Everything else was done behind the lights.

Without those you only get the all brake, and not all turns.

You're welcome. Glad we could help.  :B:

I was connecting my new tails and obviously pulled one of my connections loose.  My configuration was a little different as I had the turn signal over ride the brake signal even if the brakes were applied.  So even while braking both the upper and lower light continued to flash (on the side of the turning direction).  I didn't realize how I left my wiring all in disarray so I'm asking what would I need to do to reassure that I have that configuration?  Does the signal from the trailer harness provide an over rided braking signal or turn signal?

I've got plenty of brake lights so I don't really need the separate action of having the upper turn while the lower light stays on continuously during braking, plus to me it just looked cleaner to have all the lights on the turning side continue to flash even while braking.

Any help would be appreciated.

If I remember correctly, the upper turn signal is not overridden by the brake. You must have duplicated this circuit to have no brake on both bulbs.

After going back and tracing the circuit it appears that I just cut the top ilght brake wire (Lt. Blue).  So I would assume that the brake and turning signals are coming from the trailer harnest, and the the turn signal over rides the brake signal...There was some method to my madness when I modded this mod over 2 years ago.  But it appear because I'm installing LED Eagle Eye tail lights (which have their own load resistors) that I've got some kind of load imbalance and everything is hosed up.

Actually, the brake light overrides the turn on the bottom only. Shouldn't really matter on the LED's as long as you have load resistors installed.

I'm thinking you will have to load the cut wire as well if you are having problems and all other circuits are loaded.

Good point....I'll try that tomorrow or just wind up doing the whole thing from the beginning again.  I think my Extreme LOF may have something to do with it as well....I've got wires all over the place..... :E:

Hey all..  Just completed this mod with help from my Hubby today..  Makes my baby stand out BIG TIME...
We have been looking around the site for a while now..  And this was one of the first mods we finished..  The other was ambers of course..!!!!

Thank you all for all the great INFO...

Now you just need sail panel LEDs and All on High mods.  >:D

Oh, and HID's too.  (y)

Does anyone know if this will work on GMT900's? As i understand, the turn signals are controlled by the BCM, will this mod interfere with that? :help:

What model and year? I will try to find a schematic, to see if it can be done.
