Front door Speakers

When replacing the front door speakers is it better to go ahead and replace with a component system or go without the tweeter since it is mounted so low. I had always heard this was not an effective mounting location. Any sugestions?

...I went with the component, same as whats in the Av now..... my HU also has DSO (Digital Sound Organizer) which produces a phase shift , and raises the treble portion so to speak to a higher, brighter level.

I find that depending on the type of music I am listening to, I either turn it off, or use level 1-2-3 .

Many say the components are no different than co-axial for most people's listening interests.

Hope this helps a little!!

Most of the time a component set does sound better than a coax. This is usually due to better construction of the drivers and a better crossover network. The down side is that most components need an amp to power them to their full potental. If your not adding a amp, you might be better off with a coax.

I know this is just the opposite of what's mentioned above, but most component sets utilize the same drivers that the coaxes do, it just a simple matter of economics for mainstream manufacturers. A coax has many advantages over a component set, due to the proximity of the tweeter to the mid/woofer. It's true that with judicious placement and aiming you can achieve great results with a comp set, but the same is true with a coax as well.

If you are planning to install the speakers in a position other than the doors, go ahead and check out the components and mess with kickpanel mounting and/or mid A-pillar tweeter locations, depending on the crossover cutoff and slope. If you just want a good upgrade, put the coaxes in the stock locations and smile. ;D

I can agree with this. I was torn between replacing my door speakers with coaxes vs. components. Most everyone said that since components are already in the doors then that's what I should replace them with. I thought about it for a while and decided to save some money and buy coaxes. I'm very happy with my decision. They were a big improvement over the stock component speakers. Besides, I like the Plug and Play installation of coaxes.

When I first installed them I didn't disconnect the factory door tweeters. Big mistake. The sound was just pain nasty!! :D: I quickly disconnected them and it made a big difference. ;D I discovered the hard way that double tweeters can make very squeaky music.

DS, do you always try to prove me wrong. First off, there is no coax on the planet that has as good of a crossover network as any set of seperates does. The only ones that do, are still components, but they have an axis mount option. Lets look at Boston. Thay don't make a pro series or z series coax. Thats because the construction of the midbass and tweeters included in these 2-way sets is far superior to any coax they produce. Jl audio makes zx and xr 2-way sets. Again, they have nothing in common with their lower line of vr coaxs. If you think that you can give me an example of a company where this is not true, let me know.

Im going to go with JL componants and just mount the tweeter in the factory A-pillar location with the driver in the door location and then go with a good set of JL coaxes in the rear doors plus my 10w-0 for some bass. Powered with 2 Alpine amps, md-500 for the sub and an md-400 for the doors. (md-500 is 500x1 digital and the md-400 is 400x4 basically 100 watt per channel digital) should be a great setup once finished

>> YOU've been HANGING AROUND with ENKEI, haven't you!!!! <<

;D ;)

Yak this is what I ripped outta my Blazer.. its just collecting dust in my basement so i mind as well start modding the interior a little. Too bad I couldn't bring all my subs over from the Blazer :C: You might have been hearing me up there in Newfie land >:D

Yak just wait till Bonedog and I get up there. We will ROCK Canada..We'll show you what JL can do... >:D

muuuuuuaaaaaaaaahahhhhhhahahahahhahah >:D

Hey Glenn we might just be able to stop the falls from flowing if we play loud enough!!

I believe ya bro!! If I could afford to send my truck out and have an audio system installed professionally, it would have been done!! :) So I just gotta stick with my piecemeal of Infinity speakers for now!!! :)

Yak if you want bass let me know... I might be able to build you a box like mine to hold 1 10W-0 JL sub. Midgate doesn't fold all the way down but good enough for me. Let me know

Yak I have the speakers here ready for shipment up north. :D What else are we gonna bring up?...

BRING Jo' BAD SELVES, dawgs!! BRING Jo' Bad Selves!!!
I could use some BLINGBLING DAWG chains to wear around my neck, to go with my B.E.T soul!!! DID YOU ask Con'rad (?) for some for me after?? ;D ;D

Allied,
I'm not trying to prove you wrong, what I said is a simple matter of fact. I did not make my reply with any sarcasm intended, as I only stated the plain and simple truth of the matter. That fact is that for a simple upgrade, a coax is perfectly fine. I never stated that every manufacturer made coax and comp sets that used identical drivers, as your reply states with the JL example. As for " there is no coax on the planet that has as good of a crossover network as any set of seperates does", I have a set of MB Q coaxes (TX3's) sitting in the cabinet above the monitor that I'm staring at that uses the identical crossovers that the comp set does, as well as the same drivers. If you look around, you'll find the same drivers being used in many comp sets and coaxes.

Your argument of top-of-the-line sets being "far superior" to their lesser-line coax brethren is valid, and I never said that it wasn't. After all, if someone purchases the absolute best drivers that a manufacturer has to offer, wouldn't you hope that they would take the time, or pay someone to take the time, to find the absolute best mounting locations possible in the vehicle? That certainly would not be the door of the Avalanche. However, sometimes these best locations are, :gasp: a coxial mounting scheme

Look for example at your Bostons that you mentioned, ready and waiting for a coax mount:
Z6SYS.JPG

Look at the many winning IASCA cars that use kickpanel mounting of the woofers and tweeters in the front of the vehicle, with them as close as possible. This certainly doesn't happen by accident, and simulates a coax mount as much as possible, and some cars go as far as placing the tweeter over the mid/woofer, as in a coax mount in the kickpanels. "Why don't they just use the coax then" you ask? More often than not, the woof and tweet are of different lines or manufactures, or are too large to do so, as in larger format tweeters, like the Focal TLR and Esotars.

As for crossover superiority of coaxes, look if you have time at some freq response graphs of a set of coaxes and comps that use the same drivers, with the comp set in the +/-0db tweeter output, and you'll most likely find that they are identical. The big pretty "boxes" that people love with components that instantly make them sound "better" according to the salesman that's worked in audio for two months at your local big-box retailer can provide you with identical sound quality as the coax counterpart. The coax simply doesn't have the adjustability options that the comp set does, with their different output level options for their tweeter and/or woofer in some cases.

Keep in mind that THE BEST crossover in the known world would be NO crossover at all; we would have a single driver capable of the full range of sound, allowing all frequencies to eminate from a single point source in time and eliminate phase and dispersion related problems of multiple drivers.

Man, I wish I knew! I did this really stupid thing about ten years ago and got married in the middle of March :3: I constantly get, "Man, what the hell were you thinking that"s SBN time!?! " from friends.
Sooooo....it looks like I may end up far from Daytona this year around Spring Break......but believe me, I'm definately trying to fit it in!

Hey if anyone os looking for a good set of speakers the boston z series is the way to go. I am running them in my civic with two gt-24 amps (one for each side l-r) and a gt-24 running 4 10" boston pro subs. Right now i am in the middle of figuring out what to put in the Av once i get it. So far I am thinking about a 10" screen up front with an alpine dvd head unit with the z series up front and the pro 6 in the rear with a pro 10. Yes i love my bostons so if you want some great sound then make sure you look at boston acoustic before you make your final decision.

One weekend Thats it. Leave her at Disney. Remember I do have a planed tour of JL HQ set up for Tue I hope. Tag a long ;D. Glenn

I'm going to do my best to make it! I've missed Daytona for the past several years....... >:D
