I have used STP fuel injector cleaner twice now in 2 weeks since I bought my used AV, there was no rough idling or such before but I feel better using injector cleaner every second fuel tank fill up. any insight be appreciated. thanks

Boy...this topic could get long and hotly debated...

I don't know how fuels are formulated in LEBANON...but here in the USA, Chevron makes a great fuel with Techron...arguably a great additive that does as good if not way better than STP...
Shell is introducing V Power Premium grade this coming Monday...it has 5 times the detergent of non brand gas and 3 times what their regular and plus grades contain...

What is probably agreed on is that some form of cleaner, detergent, anti-carbon build up chemical is beneficial to late model engines especially when they have higher milage...the concept is to prevent preignition which can occur when the buildup of these deposits goes unchecked...

while a good fuel injector cleaner is encouraged i believe adding to the fuel every two fill-up's is a bit much.

I would also agree. I have been told, don't know for a fact but that over use of fuel injector can lead to fouled plugs. ???

Fuel injector cleaner as an additive can do no harm, and it may do some good in the long run. All major fuel companies have additives in their fuel. DO NOT PAY FOR A FUEL INJECTOR FLUSH FROM ANYONE! It is actually called a "wallet flush" on the inside. No benefit at all.

i keep hearing people say that gas companies add this/ that to their gas. you need to realize that if it is a cleaner in there it does not compare to the concentration added by you when purchasing a fuel cleaner from the automotive store. if there is any at all it's very little in my opinion. the more they put in the fuel the more it would cost them. which in turn would raise the cost of fuel for a totally different reason from what we are seeing now.

if there is cleaner in fuel then why are plugs still fouling? why are injectors failing from dirty fuel? use the fuel injector cleaners during your oil changes. that would be just fine.

i know two people who bought fuel from the same gas station and ruined two coils, two plugs, and the fuel filters. these were GM vehicles. this was from water in the fuel. so i would guess if water is in the tanks at the stations, so is a bunch of other crap.

let me share a story with you...

my wife had a '99 Honda Passport that had a problem that was tripping the check engine light. took it to the dealer to have it worked on. they told me it was the EGR valve; $200. and they will have to remove the intake manifold to remove carbon build-up between the manifold and the heads; $950 :E:

well they removed the manifold. the service writer told me that even if he wanted to charge me for the carbon clean-up he could not, since there was little to none there. this truck had 110k miles on it. so carbon build-up would definitely had been an issue if i had not been using my beloved Marvel Mystery Oil. i have also used Berryman's B-12 and Lucas Fuel Injector Cleaner. the B-12 i think is a little harsh for regular use. the other two, Marvel and Lucas, are oil based, so as they clean they also lubricate the o-rings. whereas the B-12 may dry them out. i spilled some on my hand and the side of the truck. you could see where the lotion on my hand had been "dried away" from my hands. the area's on my hand became ashy. the truck looked dull where the B-12 had dried.

I use the Chevron fuel injector additive - Techron- usually after every oil change. GM sells something similar at the dealer, but from my understanding its the same exact thing as the Chevron additive, just in a different container.

I started using the additive because of my one experience on my 2000 Silverado. I was in the middle of nowwhere and the only gas station was Arco. The next day my Silverado was spurting and jumping like crazy. I remember it barely started. Brought it do the dealer who said I had used cheap gas. They poured in some of the GM additive (Chevron Techron) and it fixed everything.

Now, as a precaution, I use it just to keep her clean and running smoothly.
