Gas Mileage 8.1

I just returned from a trip to Fresno and got 14.2 mpg on the way up. I am running superchip and 91 octane fuel. Drove with cruise control @ 75 mph without ? conditioning. This is the best I have seen. ? ?;D
 
Can't cry over mileage like that with a BB. What do you get in town?
 
I get 8-10 in town. Problem is I can't keep my foot off the gas pedal. ?The superchip also makes it fun, ?;D ?it really runs good.
 
I just took a 1000 mile trip, pulling a 4500 lb enclosed trailer at an average of about 68 mph. (Had to stop for some construction... 4 miles in one hour!) I got an average of about 11.5 mpg, and that was going over mountains in NC, VA, and WV. Not "great" but considering the terrain and load, I am pretty happy with it.

Can't wait to see what happens after my Direct Hits, Volant, HPP3, and Flowmaster installs are complete!





 
Just back from a 2966 mile trip. Pulled trailer with boat in Tow/Haul mode for first 1000 miles (averaged 14.11 mpg on this portion 1043miles/74 gal gas/ average milage 14.11), and the last 893 miles without the boat I averaged 17.47 mpg (893 miles/51.11 gal gas/ average 17.47 mpg). Between the two was a mix of highway and city driving. For the overall trip:

2966miles/198.853gal gas/average milage 14.92.

That doesn't seem too bad for a 4X4 pulling a heavy load for part of the trip. :)

I'm not alone when I say this....we wish our 2500's got that good of mileage. I don't think I could get 17.42 if I drove off a cliff....with the wind at my back.....in neutral. Oh well, I didn't buy the 2500 for the mileage .

I hear you. I was looking at a nice Avalanche 2500 on a dealers lot and ask him what kind of milage it was rated for. His response was "Anbody that asks me that question, I steer them towards the 1500". He never did tell me what kind of milage I could expect.

 
You guys really make the mileage that I'm getting on my 5300 sound good.

You gotta really love that low end torque to stay that friendly with a gas pump.

I got a feeling of what you're saying when we bought our Av. The tag on the 1500's listed gas mileage, but the same area on the 2500's was blank. I asked the dealer what the scoop was, and he said that 3/4-ton vehicles didn't need to be rated. Supposedly they are smog exempt too -- we'll see in a couple more years when the registration normally requires the smog check.

As for the mileage, our 2500 8.1L gets 8-10mpg in the city, and 14-17mpg on the highway.
 
City driving with less than 1500 miles on the odometer, I got a little over 10 mpg. Hope to improve on that ! My '96 Silverado 4x4 averaged around 12-14mpg with a 5.7 liter motor.
 
Spark Plug experts... Now this may be the wrong section for posting this question, however, I thought I would post the question and see what happens. I have purchased the Direct Hits for my 8.1 AV. I am in the process of installing them, however I seemed to have hit a small wall and am looking for advice/suggestions. The gap for my engine is .060" (yes, inches). The round gapper I have, after trying to gap one plug, has become dammaged. So I bought a new one, again while trying to gap plug #1 the gapper has become dammaged. I then have been looking for the flat blade type with that size and have not had any luck. Does anyone know where I can purchase the blade type gapper, NOT the ROUND one, at the .060" size. I have tried NAPA and the local PepBoys.

I have the direct hits also on my 8.1. However I did not install the plugs, the dealer did. They did set the gap at .60 as you stated. I guess you will have to keep looking for the proper tool. How bout Mac tools or Snap on.
 
"Blade" type feeler gages are normally not used for measuring or adjusting spark plug gap. If they become canted, you will not get an accurate measurment. Plugs are not properly gapped by forcing in a feeler gage. Snap-On has a several plug gages that cover .060", and have an electrode bender. Take a look at stock # FB303B.

Thanks for the info Steel, I didn't know that there was a difference between them. I have never really liked the round gappers, seemed to me that the accuracy would be hard because the gapper has a steady increase. I never used the one you are talking about before, but I ordered it, I hope it comes with instructions. I have always thought the "Blade" type were the most acurate because they did not have the increasing sizes like the round ones. It was one size all over. So I will give the one you suggest a try, I can't find the correct size here localy. Again thanks for the insight and info. It has helped out, I have been dying to put the system in for almost two weeks, just having problems finding the gapper.
 
Hey Dark:

You might want to take a closer look at all of those inserts that came with the Direct Hits. It has been awhile since I installed them, but I seem to think that it said that the gap should be set at "... factory specs, not to exceed .045..."

Well, now I am second-guessing myself...
maybe I got that bass-ackwards? ???
Maybe it was "factory, or not less than .060" ?
