which one is better on the interstate and does any one know someone who could rebuild on for me since GM sucks doing this. It is the fuorth time I have had it done by a CHEVY dealer and I will not do it again. :beating: I will take my money to some one else. Any ideas??????? HELP :help:

better for what?
you'll get better mileage with the 3.73
the 4.10 will tow better

Not another 3.73 or 4:10 thread :beating:

Considering you do a lot of flat highway driving and don't usually tow, I'd say 3.73.

Well thanks for the info on that I kinda thought that 3:73 would be it but Who can do the job right? ???

I'm pretty sure Lord Aries and BigBlackAv have both had their gears changed, might want to find out who they used.

i had great luck having rear end work done by Ken's Performance (just south of downtown on Jersey St) and w/ Kern's Transmissions (in Sanford)...I have also had good luck w/ Advanced Driveline (I think they are in Rosemont) replacing my drive shafts.  Shoot me a PM if you want to know any more details.

Ken's did my first "performance" mod, to change out to 4.56's
and a few months ago i broke the G80 and had Kerns replace it w/ Yukon Posi unit and a TA girdle. as well as some suspension mods.

hey... quick question, what is involved in replacing the front ring and pinion?  I have a 2002 with the 5.3 and 3.73 gears, but I do a lot of towing and need at least 4.10 or 4.11 gears.  A buddy of mine is saying the carrier will have to be replaced in the front if I do a gear swap.  Randy's Ring and Pinion isn't showing a part like that on the website.  Can you help?

not true...I replaced both of mine (front and rear) a couple of years ago w/ 4.56's adn I provided at the parts, which included ring and pinion sets and master bearing kits...that's it! (btw, labor was 750 smacks).
Good luck!

i think the 4.10 is better even without considering towing. I dont get much better mileage on the hwy then my friend but he gets ALOT better mileage then me around the city.  On top of that he never worries about gas mileage.

SO unless you're on flat slightly hilly hwys majority of the time i'd get the 4.10's hands down. He gets 16mpg around town and i can crank out 20mpg on the hwy but bomb the city with a 10-11mpg. Worse he could do is about 17mpg on the hwy.

Armageddon has the 3.73 ratio.

Yup... i got the short end of the stick.. On top of that with the rims i'm even higher at around 3.20 ratio. i'd actually need 4.56's to get around the 4.0-4.10 ratio i wanted in the first place (that's with 305/35/24's btw). With 26's you'd need even higher or you'd be right back to around the 3.73 again.

I feel damn sorry for anyone with 3.23's with rims (n)

I got the 3.42 with my 22's... ain't pretty!

Dang! How do you guys go off-roading w/ 22-24" rims!?!?!  >:D

I'm trying to get into an '07 LTZ right now, but won't accept anything less than the 4.10s, and there aren't that many on the lots (2 that I found were Southern Comfort conversions). I figure if I downsize the stock 20's to 17-18" rims, but go up to to a 33-35" tire, I should be back around a 3.73 equivalent.

BTW, I came across this neat Excel spreadsheet that simulates a drivetrain and shows HP/Tq/RPMs/etc... based on engine, tranny, tire size and rear-end gearing. It's pretty neat, and provides more info than most web-based calculators:

I have the 4.10 with stock rims and Yokohama tires. I get as good as 23mpg, ( have got 26mpg one time), and I can get 17 in town if I stay off the gas pedal. I live in the Intermountain West region so I need the extra oomph from the 4.10's to get up the hills. I also tow a 12 foot trailer with all sorts of crap on it. I don't think 3.73's would do as good for my use.

Oh you dont have to think.... they wouldnt ...I'm actually gonna go with 4.56s (4.88 if i get the 26's) just so i'll be closer to 4.10 overall after factoring in the rims so i can have me cake and eat it >:D

This is just the perfect case i was waitin for someone to say. the Avy's are waaaay to heavy for the 3.73's to actually give good mpg's anywhere but slightly going downhill or only on the hwy.

I think we are actually close to the same now... 11mpg in the city with a couple hard lauches. (I'd get 12mpg absolutely BABYING it). When i say babying i mean Throwing in Neutral on the way to a light, the softest and most steady take offs, and all.  It's just not worth all that in the city to get 70miles from $20-30 :needhug:  When i get on the hwy i barely see a gain.
