Glove Box Question

O.K., just picked up my 03 Avalanche last night. Going over it and here is my first really stupid question.

When you open up the glove box, there is flat section on the right side with 2 retaining clips. It looks like if is made to fit something thin and rectangular. Any idea what it is for? My one guess is a locking clip for a child's car seat?

Any body know?

I wondered about that and the little clip in the lid of the center console (bench seat).

Maybe they are to hold maps?

The map is a good guess, I will have to see if one fits. Sort of redundant though with the huge map pockets on the doors.

been discussed before and no real answer...check out some of the threads by doing a quick search for "what is it"

The '02s have a similar clip on the glove box lid. New York requires you to keep your proof of insurance card in the vehicle, so I keep my insurance card there. It fits nicely, and it's always handy: I don't have to go digging through the glove box each year to put in the new card.

As for the clip on the console lid: that's not for maps, it's for holding club brochures!

In the center console...I keep a pen. Fits very nicely in there. The "clips" in the glove box, I keep a tire pressure gauge. Whatever works!!!!

anything "pen" shaped fits nicely. Unfortunately, they removed them from the console in the '03s, but left them in the glove box, where I can't reach them while driving :(

I thought that's what the slots behind the seats were for. The one under the console lid can only hold a dozen or so.... ;)

The dozen in the console are so you have them at hand to quickly jump out of the truck at a moment's notice and chase down another Av. You can then replenish the console stock from the main stock in the seat back pockets. >:D

This thread caught my eye because I thought that you folks always called them "glove compartments".... next thing I'll be hearing you saying things like... boot, bonnet and windscreen.

It's always been a glove box to me, but what do i know?

I took another look at it, a map will not fit under there, either will registration/ ins card, its just too narrow. I am going to try my child's seat saftey clip idea.

Glove box is kinda dated, anyway (at least I've never lived in a climate that requires gloves) so how about "dash bin"?

My '03 console does have a clip thingy in the lid, but I already tried the brochures...they won't stay. Haven't tried a pen.

Insurance and registration sounds like a great guess...bet you're on to something there!

The saftey clip fits, though not securely.

I think they must have stuck the clips there with out really having anything in mind to store in them.

Alright, it's a little slow at work today, so I took a walk outside to check this out a little more.

First, I checked the manual, the section under "storage", which makes no mention of these clips. This did bring up another question, though...

HOW DO I GET THE WRITING DESK IN MY (BENCH SEAT) CENTER CONSOLE TO WORK? ??? I saw no latch that the manual refers to.

After more closely inspecting the clips in the "dash bin" ;), I'm with justthrowit...a tire gauge justs fits too naturally there for me to think it is for anything else. Thanks for mention, because I was getting tired of hearing my gauge rolling around in there anyway. Maybe a pen goes in the other side.

In 2003 trucks, has any one had problem with the thumb botton locking plastic part to open center console breaking. ?Mine broke when wife ? (sitting in passenger seat) tried to open center console. ?The truck was week old. ?In my old Explorer and her Alero, the center console storage boxes are held closed by friction - to open just pull up. ?From where she was she could not see thumb botton to release console lid - she thought she just had to tug. ?I was at time pumping gas. When I got in truck I could tell something was wrong. ?:8: The cheap little thumb latch had broken. ?She felf real bad - she broke my week old truck.
The only thing good that came was I got to make a quilt-free trip to Chevy dealer's parts department to get part she broke. ? :B:That $3.75 part became a $150 repair - bug deflector, mud flaps, Chevy bow tie front license plate and hitch receiver cover.
Has this cheap plastic part broken on anyone elses?
Also noticed that 2003 center console does not have lock that 2002 has - another $2.00 savings for GM.

And taking the Av up to the ton!

The clip in the glove box holds, of all things, driving "gloves". Or, if you have eye glasses the glass case fits very well as the clip on the glass case fits the plastic clips. It appears, however, a poorly designed compartment.

mine are both so full I can't find , let alone Use he clips! ;D. The bench seat console takes a thorough re-organization to even open. I have to hold the stuf down while my wife carefully lifts the door open and peeks under..HA

It's not all that bad... Just have TOO MUCH STUFF!
